Elite 8: Game 2

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 2 and Game 4.

Today both classes will read "Roger the Dog" and "Who Has Seen the Wind". Make sue you put your name at the end of your post!  Otherwise, your vote will not count because I will not know which class to connect your vote with.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South. For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners". I also enjoyed that the poem is a metaphor comparing life to a flight of stairs that is hard to climb.  The poet's mother encourages him to never give up but keep trying even though life is hard.

  1. Mother to son has more meaning to me because it is about a mother telling her son that life is not going to be easy .I feel bad for the son because life is not going to be easy for him.

I have more connection with mother to son because in the poem the mother loves her son. And I know that my mom loves me.

I think that the winner should be mother to son. One example is because it rhymes like stair and bare. Also it there is a metaphor when they compare life to crystal stairs.

  2. I think Who has seen the Wind is more important. For example, it’s about a wondrous boy or girl wondering where the wind comes from or goes to. Roger the Dog is just about a lazy dog never getting exercise.

I connected with Roger the dog because sometimes I am lazy and don’t want to do anything. For example, I really didn’t want to take out the garbage, so I told my brother to. I also made a connection with Who has seen the Wind because of wondering where things go and to.

I enjoyed Who has seen the Wind more than Roger the Dog because I loved the Personification. For example, “But when the trees bow down their heads’’. I also liked the Alliteration. For example, “Neither I nor you”.
Lastly I liked the Repetition. For example, The first and second line was repeated on the second verse.I think the winner is Who has seen the Wind because I loved the message of the story.

  3. I think Roger The Dog means more to me. Because I like dogs, and I could see imagery of the dog hogging the fire. It has good rhymes like foot put.

I could make a personal connection to Roger The Dog. When my dog is sometimes like that. Sometimes I see my dog asleep next to the fire. Not moving just sitting there.

I enjoyed Roger The Dogs writer's craft more because I could see the imagery. Of the dog laying next to the fire. Not moving like he is dead. Also I like the rhyme of Roger The Dog. Like foot and put and romp and chomp.

  12. Roger The Dog is a lazy dog who sits around all day. I can make a connection with this poem because my dog sometimes just lays around. My dog always lays down and sleeps after being outside. But sometimes he is the total opposite, he comes inside and starts sprinting around like a crazy person.

Who Has Seen The Wind is about someone talking about the wind and how you cant see it but you can feel it. It has more meaning to me. It has more description too. When I was little I used to fly kites with my little sister.

I choose Roger The Dog as the winner because it has a stronger connection to me. It also has rhyming in it for example deep and sleep, and romp and chomp. It also has alliteration like,”Then flops flat, and digs down deep.” It follows the ryhming pattern AABBCC. So that is why I chose Roger The Dog.
