Elite 8: Game 1

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Both classes will read "Mother to Son" and "Casey at the Bat".

In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more?
  • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc.
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South. For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners". I also enjoyed that the poem is a metaphor comparing life to a flight of stairs that is hard to climb.  The poet's mother encourages him to never give up but keep trying even though life is hard.

    1. Dust of Snow has more meaning to me. This poem teaches me a lesson, like a small act can go a long way! An example of that was when the snow fell on him, it made him happy.

I can connect to Dust Of Snow because a small act can go a long way. An example of that is when i’m having a bad day, and someone smiles at me, it can change my attitude. This act of kindness happens a lot during the day.

I enjoyed Dust Of Snow’s writer craft more. One reason why I liked it is because it had the ABAB rhyming scheme. An example is snow and crow. I also liked how the writer's craft gave you a lesson. The lesson is that a small act can go a long way.

I choose Dust Of Snow for my winner because it has more meaning to me. It teaches me a better lesson. The lesson is that a small act can go a long way. I also like the imagery. An example is when the snow falls. This is why I chose Dust Of Snow.- Sarah

    2. I think Dust of Snow is more important because it teaches you a lesson. For example, it teaches you that you can change your mood at any time.
It also teaches you about a small thing happening that can change your whole mood.

A personal connection is when I was in Dollywood and I had an awful mood. I changed my mood when someone random gave me a piece of candy. In the Dust of Snow poem a bird knocked snow on him but it changed his bad mood into a good mood.

I enjoyed the writers craft in the Eagle.imagery because you could really imagine an Eagle looking for prey. I also could imagine when he saw prey and started to dive down and catch it. I also liked the Alliteration. For example, Clasps the crag with crooked hands. Lastly I liked the similes. For example, like a thunderbolt he falls.

I pick Dust of Snow because I loved the concept and the teaching of the poem.

    3. The poem that is more important to me is Dust Of Snow. This poem has more meaning to me because I think that sometimes what happened to the person in the poem sometimes happens to me. Sometimes I’m having a bad day and I had something else bad happen to me. I think that this is not a good day, and then I see that it is kind of funny.

My personal connection is with The Eagle. My connection is when I saw an eagle. We were driving around, and then we saw the pretty bird flying above us. It was so cool!

The writers craft I enjoyed more was the one from Dust Of Snow. I loved the rhyme scheme a lot. I liked how every word rhymed with the word below the one below it. It went: ABAB. I liked how it wasn’t very complicated. I also liked how all the words rhymed very nicely with each other throughout the whole poem.

My winner is Dust Of Snow because I liked all the great writers craft in it. I also liked the great message in the poem.
