Elite Game 8: Game 3

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 5 and Game 7.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, quatrain, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of a  proficient comment:

I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem because I thought it had a deeper meaning. For example, I liked how it was about a special moment and you should not waste it.

I also liked this poem because I can make a connection. I really enjoy watching beautiful stars too.

Finally, I really liked this poem because it had poet's craft. For example, it had a rhyme scheme AABBCC. Also, the author used couplets in the poem. For example, "I saw a star slide down the sky. Blinding the north as it went by."

This is why I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem.

Even though none of them really much of a strong meaning I chose Choosing Shoes, because it's about a kid that really wants new shoes but her parents won't let her get any.

I can make a connection with Choosing Shoes because some times I want new shoes, but my parents wont let me get any.

I like how Choosing Shoes uses a pattern of AAAB. I choose choosing Shoes for the winner.

  7. I like Some One's meaning better than Choosing Shoes'. I like how the small family couldn't find out who knocked at their door and how it became a big problem in their household.

I had a better connection with Some One than Choosing Shoes'. Sometimes my family is playing a board game or something and we hear a knock at our door but no one is there.

I liked Some One's poets craft better than Choosing Shoes'. I liked the rhyme scheme which was A B A C A D A. I also enjoyed the image that the poet created in my mind. I choose Some One as the winner.

The first poem, SomeOne is about someone who dingdong ditches someone.

The second poem, Choosing Shoes is about someone who is looking for a pefect shoe.

My favorite poem is the second poem, Choosing Shoes because it is very funny and it uses an AABCDDBC ryhme scheme.

  10. Some One means more to me. It makes me feel that I’m not the only one who feels like something is there, but we can’t seem to see it or get to reach deep inside to know what it is. It teaches me that I don’t have to know everything, and there are things in the world God wants to keep secret, like all of us.

I can make a connection with Some One. I remember lots of times when I have a great idea, then I forget the idea. Some One is about a girl in house when someone comes and knocks at this girl’s door. She opens it and sees no one, and I imagine her thinking, I’d love to find out who this person is. Sometimes I want to find out something immediately and I have had to wait for it.

I enjoy Some One’s poet craft better. One example that she use is imagery. I imagine a girl named Mandy who lives in a small cottage and she hears a knock at her small door. She opens it but sees nothing but some animals. Walter De La Mare also uses repetition. She repeats the word knocking three times.

    I like Some One better.

I can connect to choosing shoes by remembering how hard it was to chose the best ones.

The poet's craft in choosing shoes is good because they use quatrains(New shoes new shoes Red and pink shoes tell me what would you chose if they'd let us buy) The imagery is Amazing for instance Red Pink and Blue Shoes.

  16. I chose life doesn't frighten me as my favorite poem because it has a deeper meaning. For example, choosing shoes has little meaning but life doesn't frighten me says that things don't frighten them in life and that means a little I guess.

I also liked this poem because I can make a little connection, I am not frightened of a lot of things in life but I am still frightened of somethings.

Finally, I liked this poem because it had poet's craft. It is mostly aaa, bbba, ccca, ddda, and so on. It also has onomonopia. For example, it says," I go BOO, make them SHOO."

  17. Choosing shoes is more important to me because it is a fun poem that reminds me of when I go to pick out my new shoes. When you think of of going to choose shoes it may sound boring. But when you come to pick out the shoes there are so many different kinds of shoes and it ends up being fun to pick shoes.
I can connect with this poem because when I go to stores I see all kinds of different shoes and in Choosing Shoes it names so many kinds of different shoes to buy.
I like the poems rhyming scheme (AAAB) because it repeats
itself throughout the whole entire poem. While reading this poem I can imagine myself choosing my own shoes.

  19. The poem with the most meaning to me is Life Doesn't Frighten Me because it is about being brave in the face of danger. For example, in the poem, it lists all sorts of things that scare people like ghosts, lions and strangers in the dark.
I can make a personal connection to Choosing Shoes because the shopper reminds me of myself. Whenever I go the store with my mom I find all this random stuff that I "have" to have just like the lady in Choosing Shoes. But in the end, I realize that I need none of it and that if I ever do need something that it should be practical.
I enjoy the poet's craft of Choosing Shoes because it uses the rhyme scheme A,A,A,B. Also, it uses cool sayings to describe the shoes like "Dandy-dance-by-night shoes" and "Wipe-them-on-the-mat shoes." Finally, it used the word "cappy" which I guess means cool. That is why Choosing Shoes won.

I can make a connection to Choosing Shoes because I always want some super high-jacked shoes that are supposed to make you have, like super telepathy or mind-reading powers with "space age technology" or whatever but, thanks to my mom (and school dress-code!), I always choose the most boring ones.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

The meaning is pretty much exactly what I explained. It is about a kid choosing shoes that, in the end, he doesn't even like and he is stuck with them.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

I also enjoy Choosing Shoe's poet's craft more because I liked the different shoes like, colors, pretty stuff, comfortable, but in the end he/she doesn't get any of those requirements.

  22. The poem choosing shoes doesn't have that good of a meaning unlike life does not frighten me which is saying that life isn't all that scary and not to be afraid.

Choosing shoes has a great imagery of all the shoes the different colors and different sizes.

I have made my finale decision and the winner is.......... CHOOSING SHOES!!!!!!!

  23. The first poem is Choosing shoes ,it is about a boy that wants all the shoes in the store. I would not let him have any shoe but if he really needs them.

The second poem is life doesn't frighten me it is about a boy that say that doesn't frighten me. He afraid of nothing, play FNAF 4 right befor bed you will have nightmares.

I vote for Life Doesn't Frighten Me. I vote for this because it is about a kid that is not afraid of anything. It would be awesome If I was not afraid of anything.
