Elite 8: Game 2

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 2 and Game 4.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

Mother to Son is a more important poem because it has a deeper meaning. A mother is telling her son to never give up in life even when it gets hard.
I can make a connection to Mother to Son because sometimes I want to give up, and my mom always comforts me.
I enjoy the repetition of the metaphor, “Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.”
I choose Mother to Son as the winner.

  2. I chose who has seen the wind because it's saying even if you can't see something it is there.

Also it has a great rhyme scheme and has a lot of imagery.

  3. Roger the dog to me has a deeper meaning because it shows that if you're lazy you will get nothing out of it.

I can connect to both. I can connect to roger the dog because I know that not all dogs are super enthusiastic. Like roger. I can connect to who has seen the by knowing that you can't see everything that's beautiful.

I like the alliteration in roger the dog (Flops flat and digs down deep)The personification in Who has seen the wind were good as well. For example, The leaves hang trembling and The trees bow down their heads.

I can also make a connection with this poem because Roger and my two dogs have some stuff in common and they have some things not in common. 13. The poem with the most meaning to me is Who Has Seen the Wind? because it is a great example of seeing isn't believing. I think this virtue is something all human beings strive to do in there lives. Whenever I don't believe in something I will always think of the poem Who Has Seen the Wind? and I will be reminded that seeing isn't believing.
I can make a personal connection to Roger the Dog because sometimes I feel just like Roger. I don't want to get off the couch or go outside or do anything. I just want to save all my strength for eating, breathing and watching movies. I think Roger and I must be related because we are both really lazy. That is my connection to Roger the Dog.
The poet's craft I enjoyed the most is Roger the Dog because it had great imagery. It really painted a picture in my mind of a fat, lazy dog doing absolutely nothing. Also, it used couplets throughout the whole poem. For example, He will not race, he will not romp, he saves his strength for gobble and chomp. I chose Roger The Dog because it has a meaning to me. My dog, Lulu, is pretty lazy. She is not as lazy as Roger but still. I can relate to it because in the poem Roger will not do anything his owner tells him to do and my dog doesn't do anything I say. Also I like Roger the Dog's poet craft better because it uses a lot of similes and that makes the poem more interesting.

  20. The falling Star means more to me. This is because of I know that when I make a wish, I will be happy and confident because it makes me feel better when I know that there is a (very small) chance that it will come true. I also like how they used imagery to make it feel more realistic.

The one the that I can make a connection with is Who Has Seen The Wind?. I remember that once on a Summer day I was very hot and I asked myself, "Where is the wind?" I felt like I was melting and when I went inside I completely dried up and fine.

I enjoy the falling star better because of the writer's craft is very creative. The poem has alliteration, for example, sky-by hold-sold on-gone. It also has a little bit of rhyme scheme in it.
