Elite 8: Game 1

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read "Mother to Son" and "Casey at the Bat."

In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more?
  • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc.
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South.

  1. Casey at bat is a funny and great poem. I like the repetition aabb. I like how it teaches you how to never over estimate on things you might be great at. I can make a connection to casey at bat. sometimes I over estimate on things and end up not doing it right. I choose Casey At Bat as the winner.

  2. Mother to son has a deeper meaning to me because my parents do the same thing when I am sad. It's about a mother telling her son about life and its challenges.

I can connect to mother to son by remembering what it was like when I was younger and all of my small problem that I thought were big .
I liked the metaphor in Life ain't been no crystal stair. The poet also reverenced this twice in the poem. That shows repetition

  4. Casey at the bat is a good poem because it's saying not to be a show off and that if you are a show off and everyone likes you something bad will happen someday.

I have a connection to Casey at the bat because one time when i was at my sister's soft ball game a girl who had always hit on her first time and never struck out when my sister pitched struck out and threw the bat and ran crying.

I think it was a good poem and i like how the big muscular guy struck out.

I chose Casey at the bat for a winner

  5. Mother to Son is more important to me because it has a way deeper meaning to me. It is about a mother telling her son life is going to be tough but you can get through it.

My conection is that my mom tells me all the you can't always get what you want.(Best song ever written!) She also tells me to look on the bright side of life, but that's another story.

I like the imagery. I can really see a clear picture in my mind. The picture is of a mother sitting next to a boy comforting him.

    I choose Mother to Son.

  6. I thought Casey at bat was more important because,in the story casey is playing fair but also in the end it showed how not to be when you strike out.

My cousin has had a game where he had one more hit till he was striked out. I have also seen the video of casey the bat so I had a good image in my mind. That is my connection.

I enjoy the repetition in it and when it said the metaphor But there was no joy in Mudville-mighty Casey has struck out. I could really imagine that happening.

I choose Casey at bat as the winner because it had more meaning to me then Mother to Son.

  7. Mother to Son to me is definitly the winner because it's message really meant something to me. It used an everyday example of a mother telling her son life is hard to teach this virtue to the reader.
Another reason I liked Mother to Son is because it had repetation throughout the entire poem giving it a nice beat. Also it used the metaphor "Life ain't been no crystal stair" throughout the entire poem.
I can make a connection to Mother to Son because sometimes I feel like the challenge is to big to overcome, but my mom, dad and God don't let it get the best of me. Also, another way I can connect to Mother to Son is through my child hood. This poem totally reminds me of fairy tales I used to read a lot when I was younger. That is why I choose Mother to Son as the winner.

  9. Mother to son has a more important meaning to me because the mom says to her son to never give up in metaphor way. Like when she says, " Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.

I can make a connection with Casey at bat because my little sister has softball games and she strikes out she gets upset I know how Casey must be feeling.

I choose mother to son as the winner.

  10. For the winner, I chose Casey at bat because it is very funny and it shows that even the best lose. It is about a baseball game with a team that is losing but they still have Casey left. He strikes out the first two times but got really angry but still strikes out.

I can make a connection because one time I was pressured and expected to make a great drawing but I didn't make a great one and I was sad because everyone was disappointed. This also has happened in basketball to me.

I enjoy the repetition because it says that everyone was waiting for Casey to come and bat because he was so good. I also enjoy the imagery because the author described it well.

You should vote for this poem.

  12. Casey At Bat is more important to me because it is a more funny and detailed poem. In Casey At Bat it is a long poem. Even though it is a long poem it still is understandable.
I can make a connection with Casey At Bat when I play baseball. Even though you are one of the best batters or players you still can not hit it every time. You can not be perfect.
My favorite part in Casey At Bat is when Casey comes up to bat and everyone thinks he is going to hit a homerun like always. I also liked how the rhyming pattern was (AABB) the whole way through. That is also called
quatrain. Throughout the poem I had an idea of what was going on in my head. I had a picture that was in my head the whole time.
I chose Casey At Bat as winner.

  15. Mother to Son is a more important poem because it has a deeper meaning.
I can make a personal connection because when I feel like giving up my mom cheers me up. Sometimes to cheer me up my mom takes me to Nothing Bundt Cakes as a treat.
The whole poem is kind of like a big Metaphor because she is comparing life to a stair.
I choose this poem the winner.

  21. Out of the two poems I choose Mother to son. I choose Mother to son because I really enjoy the meaning, You always have to just walk right up the glass staircase even if it is hard. One of my personal connections is, That I always try to push trough or just walk right up the glass staircase. I really enjoy the imagery in this poem.

  22. I like Mother to Son's meaning. A mother was trying to prepare her son for the world as it gets tougher.

I related to Mother to Son because my mom is constantly trying to teach me how to handle myself in different situations on my own. I had a better connection to Mother to Son than Casey at the Bat.

I liked Mother to Son's writers craft more than Casey at the Bat. I liked how they related, "Splinters And boards torn up And places with no carpet on the floor," to having a hard life. I also liked how the author gave the reader imagery in their minds. I pictured an african american slave sitting down with her son preparing her son for the world. It reminded me of the characters in Pink and Say.

  24. I think choosing shoes should be the winner because I didn't care for the other one.
I have a connection with choosing shoes because I know how hard it is. Especially with BEN as your crazy little brother!
I think Choosing shoes has better craft because of how it rhymes about all the different types of shoes.
