Poetry Madness: Game 3

Image result for casey at the bat images

Read Game 3 poems, The Eagle and Casey at Bat . Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, "Roger The Dog", is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, so  this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, "The Falling Star", is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless, memorable, and to be forever gone out of his life.

I think that the winner is the poem, "The Falling Star". The reason I chose this poem is because it has great imagery, like when the woman stated,"Blinding the north as it went by". Another reason I chose this poem is the author uses the rhyme scheme: AA BB CC. This makes the poem fun to read and gives it a rhythm.

2.Casey at the Bat is about this overconfident man who wants to get a home run at his last bat but gets striked out.
    3. I think Casey at the Bat won because i could picture him getting striked out. I also chose this one because Casey thinks he is better than everyone. Also I could picture the crowd yelling KILL THE UMPIRE! I think baseball is so fun so that is another reason I chose this one. Also because baseball is fun to watch

  4. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle flying near the ocean. But he falls to get some food.

The second poem Casey At Bat, is about the Mudville Nine losing to a team in baseball. But these players named Blakey and Flynn get on second and third. This player named Casey gets up to bat he gets two strikes. But then he strikes out and mudville is not happy.

I chose The Eagle as the winner because. I like that it’s short. Also I like eagles and it makes sense. I liked the Rhyme scheme. It is AAA then the second line is also AAA. There was simile in iit. The simile was like a thunderbolt he falls.

  5. The Eagle is about an eagle in the mountains. Watching the sea for food. There are good rhymes in it like land and hand and stands.

Casey At Bat is about a big baseball game. Casy is at bat, and he strikes out. I can picture casey striking out and everyone is sad.

I chose Casey At Bat because It is a close baseball game and I could picture him striking out and his team losing. It also has good figurative language. like killing the umpire they probably would not have killed the ump. Also there has to be some joy in mudville. Casey is over confident.

  6. The first poem, The Eagle, is about what an Eagle does, and how it looks. It’s also about an eagle catching fish.

The second poem, Casey at the Bat, it’s about trying your best the first time. It’s also about Casey being really good at baseball, but he strikes out because he didn’t try his best.

I choose Casey at the Bat as the winner because it makes more sense. For example, the author used more detial. It is also really long. For example, it is 13 paragraphs. It also has a lot of rhymes. For example, day, play, same, game, rest, breast, that, and bat.

  7. I think The Eagle is about an Eagle who is hungry so he gets up on mountain side where his nest is and dives down in the water to catch a fish. I can picture an eagle diving down into the water to catch a fish.

The second poem is about a man named Casey who plays on a baseball team and everyone thinks he is so cool and they think he is really good so when it is his turn to bat he thinks to himself I am so good I don't need to swing on the first two turns. So he doesn't swing on the first and second time but on the third time he swings... the crowd is silent...and he MISSES! He is super disappointed and the crowd is to.

I think the winner is The Eagle wins because it has a good amount of detail I can picture it really well and it sounded cool were seeing someone strike out in baseball I can picture it too well. I had a lot of rhymes in it like hands, lands, and lands. The rhyme scheme was aaa, bbb.

  9. The main point of The Eagle is about an eagle that is flying. Also the eagle is very lonely and probably needs
    some friends.

The main point about Casey at Bat is that you should not be greedy. Also try hard the first time and do not think you are so good that you don’t have to hit the ball.

I like Casey at Bat because it has a very good point and it explains why you should not be greedy. Also I chose this because I really like sports. Another thing is that Casey was trying to show off and it shows a meaning of not doing that. Also it was really funny. Lastly I liked the similes and figurative language. For example, when the author said the crowds teeth were going wild.

The second poem Casey at the bat takes place at a baseball field. The home team is losing and their best player is up to bat. Casey got one strike. Then another ,and then he struck out!!
