  1. “Choosing Shoes” is more meaningful to me because I can relate to it. I can make a connection with “Choosing Shoes” because my mom buys my shoes. I enjoy the rhyme scheme in “choosing shoes”.

  2. I think ‘’ Mother To Son’s ‘’ poem is more important to me because it talks about perseverance , and ‘’ Choosing Shoes’’ doesn’t really have a meaning.

I can make a connection with ‘’ Choosing Shoes.’’ For instance , it reminds me of choosing shoes at places as in do I want to get blue , red , black , or grey shoes and that’s how can make a connection with ‘’ Choosing Shoes’’

I like’’ Mother To Son’s ‘’ writers craft better because it is very visual. It compares two things together as in , life hasn’t been a crystal staircase which means life isn’t as nice as someone who is really rich.

I vote for ‘’ Mother To Son.’’

  3. I like the meaning in “Mother To Son” because it tells you life will be ok if you mess up, and you are loved.

I make a connection to “Mother To Son” because I love my family, and I help them if they feel down.

I like the writer's craft in “Choosing Shoes” more because it has imagery with all the different types of shoes, and also it rhymed with flat shoes, fat shoes, and wipe them on the matt shoes.
I choose “Mother to Son” as the winner.

  4. The poem “Mother To Son” is more meaningful to me because a mother is telling their son that life won’t be easy because of their race. Another example of why it is more meaningful to me is because it says “So, boy, don’t you turn back.” This is meaningful to me because the mother is saying to the so “Don’t give up even if life gets really hard.”

I can make a connection to “Choosing Shoes” because I have also had to choose shoes, but the only difference is that my mom says, “OK what shoes do you like?” and I say, “I like this one,” but my mom is like, “How about this one?”

I like “Choosing Shoes” poet’s craft better because I can visualize it better, and relate to it more. A example of writer’s craft is imagery. For example, “Red and pink blue shoes.” Another example is, “Buckle shoes, bow shoes.” Another example of writer’s craft is repetition. For example, “New shoes, new shoes.” Another example is almost every time they use a adjective for the shoes they say the word “shoe or shoes.”

I choose “Mother To Son.” as the winner.

  5. I think “Mother to Son” has a better meaning. This poem is about a mother encouraging her son to keep moving forward when life is hard. But, the poem is also telling YOU to keep moving forward when life is hard. This poem is very meaningful.

I can relate to both poems. For “Choosing Shoes”, I can relate because I LOVE SHOES, and, when it comes to buying them, it is hard not to buy the whole store. I can relate to “Mother to Son” because whenever I am having a hard time, my mother, father, or sister comforts me.

I like “Mother to Son” ‘s writer’s craft when Langston Huges compares his mother’s life to a boarded up rickety staircase and a crystal one. This shows imagery. This poem has alittle bit of a rhyme scheme. It is ABCDEFB.

    I choose “Mother to Son”.

  6. I think that “Mother To Son” has a more important meaning to it. Why I think that is because it is about a mother who was properly a slave saying that her son’s life can still be better than hers was.

I can connect to “Mother To Son” because my life has been hard, and I hope that others can have a life better than mine.

I like “Mother To Son’s” writer’s craft better than “Choosing Shoes’s” writer’s craft because it has more imagery. I can see the crystal stair she is comparing her life to very clearly. I can also see the stair she thinks her life is like; full of splinters, made of old wood, not safe to walk on. Sometimes, my life is like that. That is why it has good imagery. It is also why I pick “Mother To Son”.

  7. The meaning of “Mother to Son“ is about a mother telling her son the hardships of life, but you have to keep climb or keep on going no matter what.

A connection I made with “New Shoes” was that I love getting trying them on and running around, but I don’t always get the ones I want.

Some writer craft in “Mother to Son” was metaphors. Like when it says “life is no crystal stair” which means life is not perfect, or when it says “life will have nails no carpet and even no light sometimes but you have to keep going.”

I vote for “Mother to Son” because of the writer's craft and a greet meaning.

  8. The poem, “Mother to Son” to me has more meaning to me. I think this because this because it is a mother telling her son that when when things get hard that does not mean you go backwards. It means that you persevere. I can infer that the mother has had to persevere a lot. This is why I think ,”Mother to Son has more meaning.

I can connect to the poem, “ Mother to son” because I have had to persevere before because when I was first learning to skate I was not good. I had to keep trying till I got it. I also can connect to when test happen, I have to try and think to be calm and persevere.

The poem with better craft is, “ Choosing shoes”. I think this because it has multiple different kind of it. For example,The poet used good rhyme scheme. For example, the scheme in the first quatrain AAAB. Another example of craft is rhythm. For example, The scheme for the poem is 4,6,6,5 5,6,6,5 4,6,7,5 4,6,6,5.

I choose the poem “Mother to Son” as the winner.

  9. The poem that is the most meaningful to me is “Choosing shoes” because I like exciting poems. I also know how the author feels because I never know which shoes to pick.

I can make a connection to “Choosing Shoes” because I always get exciting about choosing shoes. But the one place that I don’t like shopping for shoes is Nordstrom. I also never know which shoes to pick.

I like Langston Hughes’ craft better because I can really picture a staircase that has splinters, tacks, boards torn up, and places with no carpet. I also like the rhyming because it is very spread out. For example, stair and bare are four lines apart.

    I choose “Mother to Son.”

  10. I choose “Mother to Son” this poem means more because it tells you to ceep go at it when it is hard and rough.

I can make a connection when my dad was really comforting to me. Also I can make a connection when I have been through a hard time.

Imargy is in “Mother to Son”. For example, when she compares her life to a staircase. Another one is rhyming. For example, stare and bare. Choose “Mother to Son.”

  11. I think that “Choosing shoes,” has a more important meaning to me because I thought it sort of ment that in a secret code ment that don’t judge anything by a cover or it self. It also has another meaning to me because I personally love shoes and go shopping for shoes. I can make another thing that is important to me is I also think that the person is having a hard time choosing shoes. I love “ Choosing Shoes.”
A personal connection I can make is that I most of the time have trouble choosing shoes. I can probably make a couple more connections . Another connection I can make is that I LOVE going shopping for shoes I go like all the time.
The poet’s craft that I liked the best was the imagery. For example, I could really see a guy at a shop and it is really hard for the guy to choose shoes. Another writer's craft would be Alliteration like “ pretty pointy toe shoes or flat shoes and fat shoes.” It also has a quatrain. For example” New shoes New shoes Tell me, what you choose If they’d let us buy?”
    I chose “Choosing Shoes.”

  12. “Mother to Son” is more meaningful to me because the lady has had a rough life but she is still telling her son that it is okay and she still has time, and in that time she can make her life better.

I can’t really make a connection to “Choosing Shoes” since I don’t go shopping much, but I can to “Mother to Son”. My connection is that when I was in a hard time, I knew I had to look forward instead of sitting around feeling sorry for myself.

I like “Mother to Son’s” writer’s craft better than “Choosing Shoes’” because it has more. For example, it has imagery and metaphor. All “Choosing Shoes’” has is a rhyme scheme. An example of a metaphor is “It’s had tacks in it, and splinters.” I choose “Mother to Son” as the winner.

The one that is most important to me is “Mother to Son.” this has more meaning to me because the thing that she tells her son is amazing. She told her son that to never give up even when she is not doing well.

I can really can make a strong connection with “Mother to Son,” and that is why I really like it. The connection I can make is at flag there was a value speech and the person said never give up and that is the same thing that the mother told to her son.
I LOVE the word choice and how she compared her life to a staircase. She said that her life was no crystal staircase but that her son should never give up. The other thing is it has a great word choosing like “ise been climbing on.”

  14. Choosing shoes’’ has a deeper meaning because it is telling you what you can chose for what you want. I could see some imagery in there to I could picture the guy walking in to a shoe shop, and buying his shoes.

“Casey at Bat’’ has a connection with me. I really needed a hit for my team we were down by one point in the seventh inning, and I struck out my teammates got mad at me, and they did not talk to me for that day, and the next day and I was alone.

“Casey at Bat’’ should be the winner because I connected with that poem, and there was imagery. I could picture Casey and her teammates mad about losing that game. I could, also picture the other team bragging, and cheering.

I choose “Casey at Bat’’ as the winner- Michael

  15. The meaning of “Casey at The Bat” is more important to me because I love sports. I think it is giving a real life example about how you can get overconfident and not succeed. When Casey struck out I knew that it was because he was overconfident.

My connection is to “Choosing Shoes”. When I go shoe shopping I always want nice and glittery shoes, but I mostly get tennis shoes.

I like “Casey at the Bat”’s writer’s craft more because I like the rhyme scheme and the imagery. The rhyme scheme was AABB. For example my favorite rhyme is “If only Casey could get a whack at that, they’d put even money now, with Casey at the bat. Some of my favorite imagery was when it said “There was ease in Casey’s manner as he stepped into his place.”

I choose “Casey at the Bat” because of its meaning and the rhythm and rhyme scheme.

  16. “Casey at the bat “has a better meaning to me.It's about a boy who so self centered and thinks he so great, but when he tries to hit he is really bad .All the people had faith in him and he let them down .

My connection to “Choosing shoes “. I love going to the store and choosing shoes .I recently got a new pair of shoes and it reminds me of this poem .

I like “Casey at the bat “ . I like the Imagery it really puts you in that ball field . It also has writer's craft it has lots of quotes the writer's craft is AABB . The winner is “Cassy at the bat”

  17. “Choosing shoes” has a good meaning. I like the meaning of “choosing shoes.” For example, I now how you choose shoes and how you can pick all types of shoes.

“Casey at the bat” is a good poem. One of the connections I had with this poem is that I once got really upset and ran all over the place because I did not catch the football.

I choose “Casey at the bat” as the winner. I really liked the onomatopoeia. For example, BAM when the lightning came down. Another writer’s craft I liked was the picture in the poem. For example, I could really see how he felt when he missed the hit.

  18. “Casey At the Bat” has more meaning to me because it is funny how he thinks he is so good. I like when he strikes out.

I have a connection to “Casey At the Bat” not because I struck out. I have a connection with it because I play baseball. I have lost the game by hitting the ball, but it was caught.

The writer’s craft in “Casey At the Bat” is imagery. It has imagery when it says “ So, when cooney died at second, and Burrows did the same”. I could picture them dying at second. My last example is the rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme is AABB.
    I choose Casey.

  19. “CASEY AT THE BAT” is important to me because I like how he is sad that he lost and that he will do better next time he bats. Now every one hates him just because he missed a swing its not that imporant

My connection to “Casey At The Bat” is when I sturck out thinking my team was mad they said great job and next time you can get them that is how I can relate to this poem cause some times people can get angry but that will not stop you

I like that “CASEY AT THE BAT” has imagery and rhyme sceme. They show that people were mad and I can just see people raging mad. When they say wack it hit the bat makes me think of rhyme sceme a lot.

I chose “Casey At The Bat”- CHARLIE ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  20. The poem that has a deeper meaning for me is “Choosing Shoes” because there are all kinds of shoes and it really is hard to choose shoes. I really like the imagery. For example it said, “Fat shoes, flat shoes, stump along like that shoes. I could really imagine all kinds of shoes!

The poem I have a connection with is “Casey At The Bat” I have a connection because sometimes when I play basketball I get really excited because I think i’m going to win, but instead the other team scores and we end up losing. I always feel really bad afterwards and in “Casey At The Bat” the whole town feels bad after the game.

I like “Casey At The Bat” because it has lots of writers craft. For example it had onomatopoeia when it said, “If only Casey would get a whack at that.” I also like the rhyme scheme when it said, “The sneer is gone from Casey’s lips, his teeth are clenched in hate. He pounds with cruel vengeance his bat upon the plate.” Another example of rhyme scheme is when it said, “They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain, and they knew that Casey wouldn’t let the ball go by again.” For me “Casey At The Bat” is a great poem and it is the winner for me.

  21. I think “Casey At Bat” has a better meaning to me. For example, when Casey gets up to the plate he knows he will hit the ball. I think he was so self confident that he just messed up. This has a great meaning to me to not be feel so great about about myself and to focus on the present.

I can make a good connection with “Casey At Bat” because when he struck out he felt horrible and frustrated. This reminds me of how bad I fell when I strike out. I get really mad and frustrated with my self. I learned that you put it behind and think about the present.

I like “Casey At Bat” writers craft better because it is packed with qatrains. Also, it has an AABB rhyme scheme. Also, it has some allteration. For example, Christian charity. I realy like how at the end it says there is no joy in Mudville.

    I choose “Casey At Bat”.

  22. “Casey at the Bat” has a stronger meaning to me because I like how the author is taking something he probably knows a lot about, and making it a poem. I also like that it is telling you life doesn't depend on one person.

“Casey at the Bat” I can relate to because I’ve been to a baseball game, and have seen players strike out. They always seem mad and I can relate to that feeling. For example, when I make a really bad shot in basketball I get mad at myself.

My winner is “Casey at the Bat” because I like the writer's craft a lot better. For example, it showed imagery when it said, “It looked extremely rocky in Mudville that day.” I can completely see the rocks and dry land. That is why I chose “Casey at the Bat”.

  23. “Casey at Bat” is more important to me because it talks about baseball and that even if you are the best you shouldn’t celebrate before the game is over because you never know what could happen. Also, I thought it taught you to not brag.

My connection is with”Choosing Shoes” because I have gone to the store trying to get shoes, and you can’t decide between all the options.

I like “Choosing Shoes’ ” writer’s craft more because I really like alliteration. For example,”flat shoes fat shoes” and “dandy dance shoes”.Also I liked how the writer used quatrains. For example, they ended in buy, try,I, and buy.

I choose “Casey at the Bat” as the winner.

  24. I think “Casey at the Bat” has a more important message. I think this because it’s teaching you a lesson to to not be selfish just to get attention. Also, if you pretend to be who your not it will always end badly.

I have a connection to “Choosing Shoes.” For example, it’s talking about shoes and that you can get any kind of shoes you want. Well I like shopping for shoes because there are so many different choices. This is my connection to “Choosing Shoes.”

I think “Choosing Shoes” should win. I think “Choosing Shoes” should win because I like the quatrain. I also liked the atteration. For example, pretty pointy and, dandy dance. This is why I think “Choosing Shoes” should win.

  25. The first poem “Choosing Shoes ” is about a person saying you don't always get things in the way you want. You need to be thankful for what you have so you need to show love. For example it says “New shoes, new shoes red pink and blue shoes. Tell me, what would you choose, if they’d let us buy? Flat shoes fat shoes thats the type I’ll buy! It really made me think that I should be more thankful for what I have. I think she wants to show the reader what she was like.

The second poem “ Casey at the Bat” is about a man who thinks he so good at baseball more than he thinks he is. He makes it to where the first & second pitches aren't good enough for him, so he misses on purpose but on the last strike. He striked out and caused the whole team the win!

I chose “Choosing Shoes as the winner because it really creates a picture in my head of all the types of shoes sitting on the shelf passing over all of them and only go to the ones I could buy. This relates to me because I remember going to a store passing all of these and got the only pare I could buy. It also makes imagery in my head of all the shoes.

  26. I think “Casey at the Bat” has a deeper meaning because Casey is sad at the end, but it is also funny. Another reason is, I feel bad for Casey, but at the same time he sort of deserved to strike out. Lastly, This poem makes me have empathy and peace.

My connection is to “Choosing Shoes” because whenever I go shoe shopping I always get that feeling “Bright shoes, white shoes Dandy dance by night night shoes.” Also, when I pick shoes I select one, but the guy there says,”There are other shoes you can try on.” Or something like that.

I like “Casey at the Bat’”s writer’s craft more because the imagery is great. For instance,”Ten thousand eyes were on him,” and,”For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the bat.” This poem also shows rhyme scheme at the beginning, the rhyme scheme is AABB.

I chose….”Casey at the Bat” for the win.”

  27. The two poems “Casey at Bat” and “Choosing Shoes” are both good poems, but the one that is more meaningful to me is “Casey at Bat” because it is about how you shouldn't be self absorbed, and to think of others before yourself.
I can relate to “Casey at Bat” because once I was up at bat and our team was about to win, but I was on my last strike but I struck out. (At least I wasn’t self amused!)
I think that “Casey at Bat” has better writer’s craft because it uses good imagery. For example, “From the benches, black with people,” , “and once more the spiroid flew;”,and “The sneer gone from Casey’s lips, his teeth are clenched in hate,He pounds with cruel vengeance his bat upon the plate,.” These are my thoughts for the writer's craft for “Casey at Bat”
I choose “Casey at Bat” for the winner of this round.

  28. “Choosing Shoes” has a deeper meaning to me, because the poem talks about how shoes come in all different shapes, colors, and sizes. I also like how this poem has good imagery. For example, I can imagine all the shoes all unique in their own way.

My connection is with “Choosing Shoes” because this poem connects with how people are all unique. No matter their religion, race, or background. We should still love them because in the inside, we are all made in GOD’s image. We should never judge each other!

I pick “Choosing Shoes” as the winner because I really like the deeper meaning in this one. I think this poem has great rhyme scheme. For example, “new shoes, new shoes, bright shoes, white shoes, flat shoes, fat shoes. Also, I found out that each stanza repeats the same thing, the three first lines all rhyme except for the fourth line.
