Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 6 and Game 8.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:

  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

I chose Choosing Shoes because it is a fun poem. For example,I liked how they were choosing from all different kinds shoes.

I also liked this poem because I can make a connection. It is hard for me to chose what shoes I like best.

Finally I really liked this poem because it has poet's craft. For example, it had four quatrains and the rhyme scheme for each is AAAB. In each quatrain, the author talks about a different kinds of shoes. This is why I liked Choosing Shoes as the winner.

  1. I think’’ Do You Carrot All For me ‘’ is more meaning ful because it talks about love. Love is also a fruit of the spirit , and it is meaningful.

I can make a connection with ‘’ The New Suit.’’ For example , once I went to one of my dads partner’s party and they had the most amazing food on the planet , but I coulden’t eat `some of the food because of the clothes I was wearing.

I like ‘’The New Suit’s ‘’ writers craft for example , it was very visual because you can see a new suit in you mind. ‘’ The New Suit ‘’ also has alliteration as terrific tie. For my winner I pick’’ The new Suit. ‘’

  2. The poem “Do You Carrot at All For Me” is more meaningful to me because it is a poem about somebody caring for somebody, and saying they love them and want to marry them.

I can make a I connection to “The New Suit” because there has been times when I have had to choose a nice thing to wear to dinner, and they have something like ice-cream, and then I have to be careful to not get it dirty.

I like Nidia Sanabria De Romero’s craft better because I can relate more to it. I also liked how she used imagery to describe the different kinds of suits. For example “Striped suit terrific tie.” Another example of imagery is when the poet said, “Don’t eat ice cream because it might drip.” I choose “The New Suit as the winner.”

  15. The poems “Do You Carrot All For Me?” and “How To Eat a Poem” are both good poems, but I think that “How To Eat a Poem” is more meaningful to me, because it says that you can bite right in to a poem witch I really like because It’s true.
I can relate to “How To Eat a Poem” because I was once eating a orange on a hot summer day, and I bit right in (just like you would with a poem) and instead of throwing the peel away, I put it in the garbage dispenser (it makes the sink smell good). That made it just like a poem, you bite rite in and you can’t throw it away.
I think there was good word play in “Do You Carrot All For Me?” beause with word that could be was replaced with fruits or vegetables. For example, “Do you carrot all for me”, “ “my heart beets for you”, and “with your turnip face and radish nose” These are my thoughts for writers craft. I really hope that “How To Eat a Poem” will proceed in poetry madness! -William

  18. I choose “The New Suit” because I can relate to this poem more than the other one, It has writer’s craft, and I know what the meaning of this poem is. I know the meaning of this poem is to talk about having to wear uncomfortable things.
I can relate to this poem because whenever I am going to an important event or to a fancy restaraunt, my mom always makes me dress up in uncomfortable dresses.
This poem has imagery and allitertion. This poem has imagery because, if you close your eyes after you have read the poem, it is like you are at the movie theater watching a movie. This poem has alliteration when it says “terrific tie.” That is why I choose this poem.

  19. I think that “Do You Carrot All For Me?” has a better meaning because he is trying to tell the other person that they should be together but using vegetables as a replacement for some words.

I can connect to “The New Suit” because once I was going to a birthday and it was a American Girl party, so I thought I should bring a American Girl Doll. I brought a small one in case no one brought a doll. But every one brought a big doll, making me stand out from everyone else.

If I had to pick a winner because of its writer’s craft, I would pick “Do You Carrot All For Me?” because of its word play. I like how it changes some words to vegetables like in the title. Care at is changed to carrot. I also like that he made the poem about if they could get married, witch fits the veggie words.

  20. “The New Suit” has more meaning to because it tells about a man who messes up and changes his mistakes. What I think the poet meant by that is that when you mess up you find where you messed up and fix it.

I can can connect to the poem, “The New Suit” because once when I was little I went a party all dressed up and when I did that I realized that I could not have fun. I then realized that If I had worn regular clothes I could of enjoyed myself.

The poem , “Do you Carrot all for Me” has better better writers craft because of its wonderful word play. For example, line 7 says he , “Lettuce mary”. Another craft I saw was imagery. For example, line 3 say, “ With Your radish nose” I chose , “ New Suit” as the winner.

  23. I can’t decide on the one that is most meaningful to me because after reading “The New Suit” again I understood it a lot more. Before I read “The New Suit” I liked “Do You Carrot All for Me” and I thought that “The New Suit” was really boring.

I can make a connection to “Do You Carrot All for Me”. For example, on one of our programs the words were let us walk. Instead sometimes I said lettuce walk. He also uses lettuce in his poem.

I like Anonymous’ craft because he a lot of word play. For example, “My heart beets for you” he uses beets like the veggie. He also uses repetition. For example, he says a lot of ways he likes the person.

  25. The first poem, IF is about giving advice, and people wishing they had things they didn't. It's also about telling the truth if you have something or not.
The second poem, Who has seen the wind is about the wind passing through spaces and corners. It's also about a person wondering where it has come from.
I think the winner is IF because it has more details and writers craft. I loved the imagery in it because you can imagine someone saying these wishes and or thoughts. Lastly I liked the repetition because almost all of the sentences started with If you can. This is why I think the winner is IF.
