Elite 8: Game 3

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 5 and Game 7.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, quatrain, etc

 Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of a  proficient comment:

I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem because I thought it had a deeper meaning. For example, I liked how it was about a special moment and you should not waste it.

I also liked this poem because I can make a connection. I really enjoy watching beautiful stars too.


Finally, I really liked this poem because it had poet's craft. For example, it had a rhyme scheme AABBCC. Also, the author used couplets in the poem. For example, "I saw a star slide down the sky. Blinding the north as it went by." 


This is why I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem.

  1. “Falling Star’s” meaning is more important to me. The lesson not to take things for granted. For example “Good only to make wishes on, And then forever to be gone.”r
    I can make a connection to “Falling Star” Because I have taken things for granted and regretted it.
    I also really liked the imagery in “Falling Star”
    I enjoyed “Falling Star” more because It has a deeper meaning. I choose “Falling Star” as the winner.

  2. I liked the message in “Life doesn't Frighten Me” because it talks about what he isn’t frightened of and he likes not being scared of that many things.


    A connection I made in “Life Doesn't Frighten Me” is how I am not scared of many things eather like him.

    I liked the writers craft in “Choosing Shoes” more because it had rhymes like flat and fat shoes and strappy, cappy low shoes. It had imagery with all the different colors and different looking shoes I could see inside my head.

  3. “Choosing shoes” is more important to me. My connection to it is that my mom picks out my shoes instead of letting me. I enjoy the rhyme scheme in it.

  4. ‘’ Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,’’ is more meaningful to me because it means never give up and never be scared,

    I can make a connection with ,’’ Life Doesn’t Frighten Me ,’’ for example , mostly I don’t give up and a lot of times I try to be brave.


    The writer's craft in ,’’ Life Doesn’t Frighten Me ‘’ has rhyming. You can also really visualize someone that not frightened and is brave. It also has alliteration for example , Panthers in the park. ‘’ Choosing Shoes,’’ has rhyming for example , blue and choose. It is also very visual. As my winner I choose ,’’ Life Doesen’t Frighten Me.’’

  5. The poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is more meaningful to me because it says what they can do if they aren’t afraid of things. Such as, they can walk on the ocean floor and never have to breathe.

    I can make a connection to “Choosing Shoes” because I have also had to choose shoes before.

    I like “Choosing Shoe’s” poets craft because better because it uses repetition. For example, “New, new shoes.” Another type of poets craft is imagery. For example, “Bright shoes, white shoes.” I choose Choosing Shoes as the winner.

  6. I like “ Choosing Shoes more because it says there are so many awesome stuff out there but you can’t always choose what you get.
    A connection I made was I want to get Dobbie a new cactus but my dad wont let me get it.
    It has more rhyming and it ends with him saying he doesn't like shoes his parents get him.I also like the alliteration I like when it says “pretty pointy” or “buckle shoes bow shoes”.I also like the listing for example red and pink and blue shoes that's why I chose “Choosing Shoes”.

  7. “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a more important meaning. I think this because it means to stay brave even if it is really hard.
    I can make a connection with “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because I have had to be brave before.
    I enjoyed the rhyme scheme and the onomatopoeia in “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”. For example, “Shadows on the wall, Noises down the hall,” and “I go boo”.
    “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is the winner.

  8. The meaning I choose “ Choosing Shoes,” because I personally like to go shopping for shoes.

    That is my reason why I personally like to go shopping for shoes.

    My favorite poet”s craft is the imagery. Here are 2 reason why I like the imagery. One example is that You can see a guy who is telling a person that their are a lot of shoes. My second example is that you can see a guy who literally buys a bunch of shoes in the guy saying who brings up the thing that you have to pay a lot of money to get all of these shoes.

  9. I think that “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a more important meaning to it because it is saying that she is not afraid of anything and that we could be brave to.

    I can connect to “Choosing Shoes” because I have had a hard time choosing shoes with my mom.

    I think that “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has better writer’s craft. For example, it had rhymes that went like AAB. It also had alliteration, like in Panthers in the park. That is why I picked “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”.

  10. “Choosing Shoes” is more meaningful to me because I feel exactly like the author does when I’m getting new shoes.
    I can a connection to “Choosing Shoes” because when I’m looking for new shoes I get so excited that I don’t know which one to pick.
    I like Maya Angelou’s writer’s craft. I like the rhyme scheme to the poem. I like how the rhyme scheme is AAABBA. The poem has repetition. For example it mentions so many ways that life doesn’t frighten her.

  11. I choose “ Choosing Shoes” because I can make a personal connection, I know what the meaning of the poem is, and it has lots of writer’s craft. I can make a personal connection because I LOVE SHOES. I know that the reason the poet wrote this poem is because she wanted to make a funny poem about girls and their obssession. This poem has Imagery because The poet uses adjectives to describe the shoes. For example, “Red and Pink and Blue shoes, buckle shoes and pretty pointy toe shoes.” This poem has a rhyme scheme, and it is AAAB.This poem has rhythm.You tap your foot to the poem, it will make a beat. If you try singing the poem, it will turn into a song. This is why I choose “Choosing Shoes”.

    Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    The first poem is called “Who Has Seen The Wind.” This is about someone telling you that you have never ever seen the wind, and also, no one has this has great pictures for example the leaves falling on the earth's surface.


    The second poem is called “The Falling Star.” This is about a girl who saw a star passing and she put a wish on it. This has good rhyming for example “I saw a star slide down the sky.”

    My favorite poem is, “Who has seen the wind ” and it’s about someone who is telling you that no one has seen the wind, and there right. I liked this because it had great imagery for example, the wind blowing thru the tree’s. And the leaves falling down.

    The poem that means the most to me is “who has seen the wind.”

    The connection I can make is when I was little I wondered where the wind came from and then I realized well I can not see it so how would I know and then I asked my sister and she said something really tecnicall.


    The one I enjoyed the most was “Who has Seen the Wind”. I liked this because it had lots of great pictures. For example, the wind flowing thru the leaves. I could also see the leaves falling down to the ground.

  13. The first poem, “Life doesn't frighten me” has more meaning to me because it is telling about a person who is saying that you can do all you want and listen for a scream but it will not come. It is also saying that there is no reason to intimidate me, for life doesn’t frighten me.


    I can connect to the poem, “ Life Doesn’t Frighten me” by the fact that have had to talk myself out of being scared when I got lost at a store. I had to tell myself to be calm.


    The poem, “ Choosing shoes” has more writer’s craft. For example a craft I saw was rhyming. For example, the rhyme scheme was AAAB AAAB AAAB AAAB. Another craft I saw was rhythm. For example, for the first stanza was 4,6,6,5. I choose the poem , “Life doesn’t frighten me.”

    This is meaningful to me so I can be more brave for my brother and for my family.
    My connection is i’m not scared of somethings to.
    Rhyming is in Life Doesn't Frighten Me . For example, loose and goose, boo and shoo, and wall and hall, loud and cloud.
    There is also alliteration when panthers and park.

  15. I thought “If” had a good meaning, but wasn’t as interesting. It had a nice lesson though. I liked this poem.

    My connection is with “If” because my dad has gave me a talk before.


    I read “Roger the Dog”. This was a good poem because it was about a fat dog. This poem had a good rhyme scheme. It was AABB. I liked the when the author used writer's craft saying “He He hogs the fire and bakes his head as if it were a loaf of bread. The last piece of writer’s craft I liked is when it said, “He will work as hard as you could wish, to empty out his dinner dish.


    I choose “Roger the Dog” because this was a silly fun poem. Even though it did not mean as much it still made me laugh. I pictured my dog like that. I choose “Roger the Dog”.

    My connection is with roger the dog .Is that i had a dog named Bailey and she did lots of things like Roger the dog . For instis she is very active .

    My connection is with “Roger the Dog” because my cat is also lazy. For example, my cat Davie always loafs around, he sleeps for about most of the day, he whines a lot to. You can usually tell that he is always thinking about food.

    I like “Roger the Dog” because the imagery is really good and I can imagine Roger sleeping next to the fire. I also like how the author makes this poem funny unlike the other poems.     My connection with the poem “Roger the Dog” is that I have a lazy dog. I can imagine how Roger the dog acts.


    My winner was “Roger the Dog” I chose this poem because I think the writers craft is better. For example, alliteration when it says flops flat. I also liked the rhyme scheme. For example, ease and fleas, also dog and log. This is why I chose “Roger the Dog”.

  19. I thought “Life doesn’t frighten Me” meant more to me because the girl is tough. For example, It says “I say boo make them shoo”. I like people who don’t get scared easily.

    I can make a connection to “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because I don’t get scared.

    I think “ Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has better writer’s craft. For example, it says “I say boo make them shoo”, and the last example is when it says, “So they fly I just smile”. My last type is alliteration. For example, it says, “Panthers in the park”.
    I choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” because it means more to me, and I can make a connection to it. I choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”.

  20. “Choosing Shoes” had more a of a meaning because it’s really cool, and it relates to a lot of good things.

    I had a connection to ”Choosing Shoes” because everytime I go to a shoe store they usually can’t find a shoe I like with my size. Also, I feel how the person feels about choosing shoes.

    I like “Choosing Shoes’” writer’s craft the best because I like the imagery of all the shoes the person’s looking at. For example,”Pretty point toe shoes” and,”Dandy dance by night shoes.” It also shows Repetition when it says,”Shoes” throughout the poem. ROMAN

    I have a connection to “ Choosing Shoes.” For example, they are saying how to choose shoes. Well I like choosing shoes at the mall and other places.

  24. “Life Doesn’t frighten Me” has a better meaning to me. One reason is that is says all of the things that does not frighten him. I like that because it tells people bad things happen but you have to stay positive.

    “Choosing Shoes” I can make a connection with because I know so many types of shoes and
    all ways I do not know what to buy. I still do look forward to the next time I go shoe shopping.


    I think “Choosing Shoes’ has a better writers craft because it has an AAAB rhyme scheme. Also, it has some Alliteration in it. For example, Dandy Dance. Well I hope mine goes to the final four

    “Choosing shoes’’ has a funny meaning about Choosing shoes in a store, and the man talks about what type of shoes there are, and what colors there are, and he decides what shoes he should get.




    I choose ‘’ Life doesn't frighten me’’ because of the writer’s craft. The writer's craft is imagery I could picture the dark halls and the shadows on the walls and the squeaky steps. This is why I choose ‘’ Life doesn't Frighten me.’’

    I can connect to “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”, because I have had a moment in my life where it wasn’t the time or place to show fear and I needed that moment.
    I liked the writer's rhyme scheme in “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” Go examples are, “panthers in the park,” “strangers in the dark” and “tough guys fight all through the night.” This is why I choose “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me”
