Elite 8: Game 1

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Both classes will read "Mother to Son" and "Casey at the Bat".

In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more?
  • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc.
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South. For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners". I also enjoyed that the poem is a metaphor comparing life to a flight of stairs that is hard to climb.  The poet's mother encourages him to never give up but keep trying even though life is hard.

My favorite writers craft is imagery.

    2. I like “Mother To Son” because it was really meanigful because it talks about how bad things happen sometimes and you don’t have to worry so just keep on with life. I can make a personal connection with how my Mom tells me not to worry about the bad things in life I like mother to sons more because it uses imagery with keep on climbing and reaching landin's

    3. The poem that is more important to me is “Mother to Son”. The connection I made was when she was telling her son to persevere through every tough time. I enjoy the imagery the most in this because it is very visual. For example, when she describes her life using this rough staircase. This is why I choose this one.

    4. The poem “Mother to Son” has a more important meaning to me because the mother was probably a slave or wasn't treated fairly, and she’s telling her son that because of their race life will be much harder. The mother also explains that sometimes life will be rough but you should keep on going. This has a deeper meaning to me because I feel bad for them.

I can make a personal connection to “Casey At Bat” because I used to play baseball and sometimes if I didn’t strike out we probably could’ve won the game. I also know how it feels to lose a game and how disappointing it can be.

I like “Mother to Sons” craft better because it uses things such as southern talking, and most slaves were from the south. I also liked how it used world play. For example, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I also liked how it used imagery when it said “life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” This imagery for me because I can picture the crystal stair really well.

    5. I choose “Mother to Son” because the meaning is more important to me, I can make a personal connection, and I really like the writer’s craft in the poem. I really like how Langston Huges put Imagery into the poem. Without even trying, my mind opened up a whole new world! The way he compares a crystal stair to a rickety one really makes you read between the lines and focus on the actual point of the poem. This poem has a Rhyme Scheme. The Rhyme Scheme is ABCDEFB. Langston Huges is using a simile when he compares life to some stairs. I can make a personal connection by my mother tellng me to be myself and don’t follow the crowd, even though it can be hard sometimes.

    6. The first poem ,'' Mother To Son,'' I feel like is about perseverance and I think that is more important than the moral of ,'' Casey At Bat,'' which is not to be cocky.

The connection I can make with ,'' Mother to son is sometimes my mom says never give up , so I try my best in everything. The connection I can make with ,'' Casey At Bat,'' is sometimes when I play baseball I can get cocky and strike out.

I enjoy ,'' Mother to son because of its writers craft , for example , it has sophisticated words as in crystal stairs compared to splinters and tacks in your feet. It also has a really good imagery for example , you can visualize a crystal staircase compared to thumbs and tacks. ‘’ Casey at The Bat,’’ has good writers craft it rhymes and it’s very visual to but I still like mother to son as the winner

    7. “Mother to Son” is more important to me.I can make a connection to “Mother to Son” is that I also believe that life isn’t perfect but I shouldn’t give up. I enjoy the poet’s craft in “Casey at the Bat” because of the rhyme scheme.

    8. I think it would probably be “Casey at the bat,” because me and my brother used to play baseball all the time back in Oxford. My connection is that me and my brother used to play baseball. I like the imagery because I can really see a guy hitting a bat and getting mad at the ball and being jealous. Also I can see a rainy day just because Casey lost the baseball game.

    11. The poem that is the most meaningful to me is “Casey at the Bat” because I play baseball and I know how it feels to strike out the first time. The reason “Mother to Son” is not that meaningful to me is because I have never heard any of my family members say that their life has been really rough.
I can make a connection to “Casey at the Bat” because I play baseball and I used to hit the ball every time like Casey. But the next season I lost my mojo so I struck out for the first time.
I like “Mother to Son” ‘s writer's craft because the rhyming is far apart. For example stair and bare. “Mother to Son” also had imagery. For example I could picture the tacks, splinter, boards torn up, and places with no carpet.

    12. “Mother to Son”’s meaning is more important to me because it tells the truth about how life is hard, and it’s not always easy. The poem is meaningful because it’s hard for a slave to believe that life is going to turn out okay, and that God has a plan for you.

My connection is to “Casey At the Bat”. Casey gets over confident that he’ll hit a home run, but in the end, he strikes out. The week before I had made all my free-throws in my basketball game. The next week I only made 1-6 because I got overconfident.

I enjoy “Mother to Son”’s writer’s craft more because I like how the mom compares her life to a crystal stair. There was repetition when it said “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”

In the end I chose “Mother to Son”.

    13. “Casey at the Bat” is a good poem. I like “Casey at the Bat” because it teaches you a good lesson. It teaches you to not be a showoff and just do what you have to do. My connection is I had to hit the last ball in a game, and I missed it.

I read “Mother to Son”. This was a great poem. She kept comparing her life to a crystal stair. This poem was a great poem. I do think “Casey at the Bat” was better. I liked the writer's craft.

I enjoyed “Casey at Bats” writer's craft more because the poet gave us more detail. For example,he told us the exact town it happened in. Also, I liked how he made it really funny. For example, when Casey struck out it was really funny.

    14. The first poem is ‘’Casey at bat’’ It is important to me because I been in baseball for 3 years. One game I needed to hit the ball for are team to win the finals but I stuck out and lost the game for us, and everyone was mad at me, and no one would talk to me the next day and I could picture the teammates mad at Casey when she stuck out.

The second poem is ‘’ Mother to Son’’ It is important to me because in pre k was the hardest grade for me I could not really know what 1-0 was so everyone made fun of me, and started laughing at me, so I was really sad when I came back from school that day I started crying at home my mom came to me , and said,’’ Michael sometimes school can be hard for everyone, and I started learning how to read and know what 1-0 was. I could picture the mom talking to the son giving him some information.

I chose ‘’ Mother to Son’’ because I could picture what was going on, and it brought me back right to when I was in pre k. It made me feel sad when the boy was probably crying because maybe the same thing happened to the boy, so I could picture the boy in his room learning how to read and know what 3 times 2 is.

    16. “Casey at the Bat” has a bigger meaning to me because it teaches you a good lesson. It teaches you to not be a showoff and just do what you have to do and not brag.
I had a better connection with “Casey at the Bat” because I play baseball. Also, I have been in a game winning moment before.
I thought “Mother to Son” had better writers craft because she compared her life to a crystal stair case. Also, the staircase was not perfect.

In the end I chose “Casey at Bat”

    17. The first poem “Casey at the Bat” is about a man named Casey who everyone thinks is the best person in the world at baseball. He thinks so too. He gets cocky and thinks the first and second throws are bad so he doesn't even bother to hit. On the last hit he gets ready and misses. He strikes out and they lost the” as the winner because it really makes a picture in my mind of how all of the people felt when he striked out. Once my brother striked out at a game and they lost. The whole team was sad. “Casey at the Bat” is more important to me because I know how it feels to lose when everyone is depending on you.

    19. The first poem “Mother to Son” is about a mother telling her son life will not be a crystal stair, but even if it isn’t you have to keep going. I like the repetition. For example, when she says life is no crystal staircase over and over.

The second poem “Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball team who’s best player Casey is on the bench. They really want him to be out there, but when the time comes he strikes out! I like this poem because it is funny. Also, the imagery of Mudville and the game happening is believable.

My winner is “Mother to Son” I chose this poem because the meaning is more important to me of life not being a crystal stair. My personal connection is my mom always tells me life isn’t easy. I also liked the imagery better in this poem of life not being a crystal stair. That is why I chose “Mother to Son”.

    20. I think “Mother To Son” is most meaningful because it’s about a mother talking to her little boy and telling him life will be hard but you have to keep going. Also, the mother told her son that life wasn’t easy for her and it won’t be for him ether.

I can make a connection to “ Mother to Son.” For example, she said that life won’t be easy for anyone. Even though I have a good life I’ve been through hard times, but I know I will be fine.

I enjoyed “ Mother to Son” most because I feel like it has a strong meaning. I also liked the rhyme scheme. For example, dark and back, and landin’s and corners.

    21. “Casey at the Bat” meant more to me because it’s funny, and I like humorous poems. Also, I like how the crowd got mad at the umpire. Finally, I loved the line,”There’s no joy in Mudville.”

I have a connection to “Mother to Son” because life has been hard for me sometimes. When life is hard, you have to encourage. Lastly, life can feel like climbing stairs for me sometimes.

I like the poet’s craft better in “Casey at the Bat” because it shows AMAZING imagery, I could picture the whole thing! Also, I like the repetition in the poem,”Kill him! Kill the umpire! Lastly, I like the rhyme scheme AABB.

    22. I think “Mother To Son” has a better meaning to me because when life gets tough you keep trudging forward. This reminds me of when you are in a forest alone and you do not know where you are. You have to trust yourself and you keep on moving forward. Also, the mother is telling her son life won’t be perfect so you just have to go with it. This reminds me of when I was in first grade and my mom said, “tomorrow we go to the doctors office.” She said, “from now on you will have to do a shot every night.” So even if life goes the other way I like to think go after it.

I can relate to “Casey At Bat” because I once was on a baseball team. Our team in the first year had one superstar. This reminds me of “Casey at bat” because he was really good at hitting the ball. So when the final pitch for him went by, he finally swung and he missed. He felt horrible about himself. This reminds me of the first time I struck out. I was so mad at myself I almost wanted to quit. Then I got over It and forgot about it. When Casey struck out he moped all over the place. This teaches me a lesson to not think about what bad things happened in the past and put them to the side, and to think about the present.

I think “Casey At Bat” ahs better writer craft. It had tons of detail also I can relate to almost every stanza in this poem. The poem also had some great rhyme scheme. For example, in the second stanza that and bat and rest and breast rhyme. Also, in stanza five yell and dell flat and bat rhyme. There are tons of rhymes in this poem. Another writer's craft I noticed is stanzas I think the author was smart to put the poem in stanzas otherwise it would basically be a story not a poem. My favorite part of this poem is But there is no joy in mudville. I think “Casey At Bat” should win.

    23. The poem, “ Mother to Son” has more of a meaning to me. I think this because it is a mother telling her son that you can’t turn back now, for she has been going for a long time. What she is telling her son mean that life has been hard but I keep going. She is telling him he can not stop going just because it gets hard. “Mother to Son” has more meaning than , “ Casey at the Bat.

I can relate to the poem, “ Mother to Son,” because even earlier this year the school project got harder I just had to keep going. Another connection I can make was learning to skate. At first I just wanted to give up, but I kept on trying.

The poem , “ Casey at the Bat” had more writers craft to me. I think this because it had a great rhyme scheme. For example, in the second stanza the scheme is AABB. With that it brings on couplets. For example, in the second stanza I saw in the rhyme scheme couplets[AA and BB].This only a fraction of the rhyme scheme I saw in the poem , “ Casey at the Bat” My winner is “Mother to Son”.

    24. The meaning that is more important to me is “Mother To Son because of its message that you can use in life.
I can connect to “Mother To Son” because I have had very tough moments in my life, and the world won’t stop. The sun will come up the next morning. You just have to know that God has a plan.
I choose “ Mother To Son” for better writers craft because you can tell everything about her from the way she talks, you can tell she was probably a slave because she compares her life to a staircase and says her staircase has nails in it. I hope “ Mother To Son” wins.
