To create a sense of poetry madness in our room and celebrate poetry, we will read two poems each day and advance a class winner the following day. However, like the basketball tournament, we must use specific criteria to judge a poem: meaning, poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition), ability to visualize, and your personal connection.
You will answer the following 3 questions about the poems you have read.
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one-two sentences)
2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one-two sentences)
3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY? ***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.
You will complete Game 1 in class. Please read Game 1 (Dust of Snow and Mother to Son), choose your favorite, and leave your comment below. I left an example in the comment section.
Here is an example of an advanced/proficient post:
The first poem, I, Too, is about race and how the poet is accepted over time and is a part of America.
The second poem, Sun Song, is about a song for African-Americans to sing about the sun to bring them hope.
Happy Blogging!

“Dust of Snow” is about a guy who has snow fall on him. He was grumpy before, but after the snow fell on the guy, he cheers up.
ReplyDelete“Mother to Son” is about a mother telling her son to persevere even when times are hard.
I liked “Mother To Son” more because it was based off a hard life experience. The mother tells her son to persevere through life, even when times are hard. That is a good life lesson for everyone.

The first poem “Dust of Snow” is about a boy who is grumpy and then snow falls on his head and he laughs and happy. I liked the imagery for example, the image of snow falling on his head.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem “Mother to Son” is about a mom who is telling her son that life is not easy. I loved the meaning of the mom saying life isn’t easy. And the imagery of the crystal staircase and the moms broken staircase.
My favorite poem was “ Mother to Son” because I liked the meaning of the mom having a hard life but keeps going more than a grumpy boy. I could also see the imagery better of the crystal staircase and the broken staircase.
Lucy Kate
Mother to son is serious because she is saying you are lucky to be young. Also, The mother is telling her son to not give up.
ReplyDeleteDust of snow is forgiving because he forgave himself for being grumpy .He was super mad at himself, then some snow fell on him, and he felt good.
I think Dust of snow is better because I can really see that he is upset then something happens, so he becomes happy and forgives himself for being grumpy.

ReplyDeleteThe first poem, Dust of Snow, is about how when your having a bad day you can turn it around. I think that because the boy starts out with a bad day, but after he gets snow on him. It makes him happy.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem, Mother to Son, is about a mother telling her son how life’s going to be hard, but you can’t give up. She does this by comparing a glass staircase to her staircase, and it’s not as perfect.
I think Mother to Son won this round because it is really meaningful and had a good message. I liked the comparison with a crystal staircase and the staircase she’s been walking on. I think this is about a mother telling her son life is going to be hard but you can’t give up. This poem really stands out even though it’s long, it had an awesome meaning.

I think “Mother to Son” was better becuase I think it was a good lesson. Also, “Dust of Snow” was very short. Another reason I liked “Mother To Son” was because it was very visual and I could picture that I was thereI could not really picture “Dust of Snow”. I choose “Mother to Son”.

ReplyDeleteThe second poem, “Mother to Son,” is about how you have to move on in hard times.
I chose “Dust of Snow” for the win because the guy feels good at the end, but in “Mother to Son” it is sad. For example, the last line in “Mother to Son” it says, “And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Roman
“ Dust of Snow” is about a guy who is having a bad day, and then snow falls down from a tree and lands on him,so his day gets better.”Mother to Son” is about how life isn't easy and you need to keep trying and never give up. I chose “Dust of Snow” because of the mood swing.I really like how he was having a bad day when snow falls out of a tree and hits him, and it makes his day better. I also liked how he used rhyme scheme. For example, when he had mood and rued.

ReplyDelete2) “Mother to Son” is like a life lesson were a mother is telling her son that life wasn’t easy but she kept going and he has to too.
3) I think “Mother to Son” should win because it was very important and was menning full. For example, her life wasn’t a crystal staircase which means that her life wasn’t perfect and you’ve got to be prepared to not live like a king.

The first poem is ‘’Dust of Snow.’’ It is about a man standing under a tree, and a crow lands on a limb. Snow falls on him and thought it was not funny but then he starts smiling.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem is ‘’Mother to Son.’’ It is about a woman that talks about how life can be hard and how you have to keep going like she talked about how her house is not nice because she has torn up boards, and has rusty stairs.
I think ‘’Mother to Son’’ is better because it has imagery, and I can picture the broken boards, and the rusty stairs. Michael
In “A Dust Of Snow” A man was walking under a tree, and then a bird lands on the tree and makes the snow fall on the man and brightens his mood.
ReplyDeleteIn “ A Mother To Son” A mother is talking to her son and comparing her life to a crystal staircase, and saying her life is like a old staircase that has tacks and holes with no light , but has to keep climbing.

1. The meaning of the quote.
2. How you can apply it to your everyday life (home, school, sports, family, friendships, etc.)
3. One way Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspires you.
I think the first poem ‘’Dust of snow ‘’ is about a bird that was sitting in a tree then knocked over snow on the person , but he becomes happier and changes his mood.
ReplyDeleteI think the 2nd poem ‘’Mother to Son’’ is about someone not being as fortunate he never gives up . I think the moral of the story is having to persevere.
In my opinion like ‘’ Mother to Son’’ better because it has a moral to the story. ‘’ Mother to Son also compares the story against somebody that is fortunate and rich. That’s why I think ‘’ mother to son” is a better poem then ‘’ Dust of Snow .’’

ReplyDeleteThe second poem, “ Mother to Son,” was about a mother telling her son how hard her life was and that even though it was hard, she never gave up. She tells her son to to the same in hard times.
I choose “ Mother to Son ” because this poem shows perserverance. Langston Huges really captured the moment of a mother telling her son to never give up. To be honest, I almost cried. He is saying, “life is hard, but you have to keep on pushing through it. He is a very accomplished poet. This is my first time reading this poem, and it was so good that it is my favorite poem that I have ever read!

“Dust of Snow” is of a man who was having a ruff day so far, and we all know how that feels. But when a branch from a hemlock tree shook the snow off, we can tell he loves the snow because it makes him happier.
ReplyDelete“Mother to Son” is about the mother telling her son how her life wasn’t that easy while comparing it to a crystal stair. She wants him to know that even though she might of had a horrible life, but his could still be alright.
I think “Dust of Snow” should win because it talks about how even tiny, little things can make a big difference in someone’s life. It is true that nature can do the same.
