Poetry Madness: Game 3

Read Game 3 poems, The Eagle and Casey at Bat . Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, "Roger The Dog", is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, so  this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, "The Falling Star", is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless, memorable, and to be forever gone out of his life.

I think that the winner is the poem, "The Falling Star". The reason I chose this poem is because it has great imagery, like when the woman stated,"Blinding the north as it went by". Another reason I chose this poem is the author uses the rhyme scheme: AA BB CC. This makes the poem fun to read and gives it a rhythm.

  2. The poem “Casey At Bat” is about a man named Casey. He is up at bat, he is sure that he is going to hit a home run, but instead he strikes out. He was overconfident, and he was trying to show off. The lesson is to never be overconfident, but still believe in yourself.

The poem “The Eagle” is about an eagle on a cliff going in to water to get food. Some of the writer’s craft is rhyme scheme, similes. A simile was used to describe the eagle when he dives to get food. It says, “ And like a thunderbolt he falls.”

I choose “Casey At Bat” because it had a lesson that we can use. The message was never get overconfident but focus. It was very descriptive. For example, it describes Casey’s face as prideful and he had a smile on his face. It was longer and had more of a story to it. That is why I chose “Casey At Bat.”

  4. I think the first poem, “The Eagle”, is about an eagle overlooking the sea. I like it because it is very descriptive and it feels very calm. I think this story was made to entertain readers about a sea eagle. I think the tone is serious because nothing really major happens.

I think the second poem, “Casey at the Bat,” is a very good poem. I think it’s about a baseball player, Casey, and how he strikes out. At first he is very confident about himself, but after he strikes out it says, “But there is no joy in Mudville.” which means everything is awful that day and everyone's disappointed I think the tone is fun because it’s a story about baseball.

I think “Casey at the Bat” is the winner. I think that because it’s an entertaining poem about baseball and I think it’s funny. Even though it is long it is still a great poem. I think it had a great rhyme scheme, for example it said, “ The sneer is gone from Casey’s lips, his teeth are clenched in hate. He pounds with cruel vengeance his bat upon the plate.” I also liked how they used wordplay. Casey at the Bat is definitely a winner!

  5. “Casey at the Bat” is about a guy that is super cocky.A bunch of girls like him too. Then then his team is losing by 2, and they have two outs. One guy ran to 3rd base, another guy ran to 2nd base, and then Casey's was up to bat. He lets the first and second ball go, then he swings to hit the ball and he misses. He gets super upset and can’t hit a ball. All the people boo and hate him.

“The Eagle” is a sad poem because the bird is getting old and is dying. He is falling and see’s the world and how beautiful it is.

I choose “Casey at the Bat” as the winner because I can really see what is happening.I can also see how everyone thinks he is so good but he ruins it for his team. The poem also teaches a lesson about not to be cocky.

  6. “The Eagle” is a poem about an eagle perched on a cliff watching below.

“Casey at Bat” is a poem about a team who has a great hitter, and who is really proud of how great he is. He strikes out, and he is crying.

I chose “Casey at Bat” because it paints a great picture in my mind. It also tells a way better story. It also teaches him a leson to not be so poud of himself. I think Ernest Lawrence Thayer is writting from experince.

  7. The first poem “Casey at the Bat” was about a team losing 2 to 4. Casey was ready to hit the ball, but when it came to his turn he struck out! I liked this poem because it had a good meaning don’t think your the best because you never know if someone is better.

The second poem “The Eagle” is about an eagle on a branch who is getting ready to fly. When the eagle tries to fly instead he falls. I like this poem because it is saying don’t give up even when time are tough.

I choose “ The Eagle” as my winner because it has a good kind message don’t give up even when times are tough. like when it said like a thunderbolt he fell it made me feel like he was going to get up and try again. That is why I chose “ The Eagle”.

  8. I read “The Eagle”. I think this poem was about how an eagle can see anything because it can fly. I like this poem because I like eagles.

I also read “Casey at Bat”. I did not like this poem because it was to long and did not have a good ending. “Casey at Bat” was about Casey’s team loosing and him thinking he won’t bat. Then he does bat and looses the game for his team.

I choose “The Eagle” because i think this poem actually meant something. For example, i liked when it said “The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;”. Also, I loved when it said, “He clasps the crag with crooked hands;”. I choose “The Eagle”.

  9. “Casey at Bat” is about a team that is down by two and has two people on base.Their best player is up to bat. He strikes out.

“The Eagle” is about a eagle who is on a mountain and dives down to catch his prey out of the active water under him.

I chose “The Eagle” because I liked how the used similes and metaphors. For example it said,”And like a thunderbolt he falls.”This is why I chose “The Eagle”.

  10. The first poem,”Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball player who is cocky, so when he is up to bat he gets all cocky and gets out.

The second poem,”The Eagle” is about an eagle, and what he does, and flies really high to catch a fish.
I chose ”Casey at the Bat” because I like he walks so cocky. Then, it’s really funny when he let’s his whole team down by striking out. For instance, “But there is no joy in Mudville.”

  11. The poem “Casey at the Bat” is a poem about a baseball game where Casey’s team was down 2-4, and Casey was at bat. Casey was acting very arrogant, and thought he was the best but then he missed and struck out.

The poem “The Eagle” is a poem about how a powerful eagle is looking for something to eat.

I Chose “Casey at the Bat” as the winner because I liked the short film about it, and how they thought Casey was the best, but failed. I noticed some rhyming such as, “Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright.” and “The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light.” I also like the quote “There is no joy in Mudville.”

  12. I think ,’’ The Eagle .’’ is about a bird that sits in a tree , then he accidently falls and lands in the ocean.

I think ‘’, Casey at Bat ,’’ is about a really good hitter that is overconfident. But he actually misses the pitch thrown to him, and they lose the game. It also teaches us a lesson about not being to cocky.

I like ‘’, Casey At Bat ‘’, better than ‘’, The Eagle.’’ I think it’s better because it’s more descriptive. Casey at bat also teaches a lesson , and you can visualize it better in your head . For example , you can picture Casey in your head. That is why I think ,’’ Casey At Bat ,’’ is better than ,’’ The Eagle .’’

“Casey at the Bat” is about a very cocky baseball player who goes up to bat like “OH I'M THE BEST I CAN DO EVERYTHING.” He didn't like the shots and the umpire said” strike one! STRIKE TWO!” and everyone got mad at him. Finally casey missed the ball, and there is no joy in mudville. Casey’s team had lost the game……………….

“The Eagle” is about what an eagle does, and how he hunts. That is what the eagle is about

I think the winner is…….. “CASEY AT THE BAT” because of how had a lot of rhymes like “stood a watching” and “mighty casey struck out”. Sayings like “there is no joy down in mudville”. It was super interesting and descriptive that's why i think casey at the bat should win.

  14. The first poem is by Alfred, Lord tennyson and it's called “The Eagle” this is about a eagle who they explain and is majestic and calm.

The next one is by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, and it’s called “Cassy And The Bat”. This is about a baseball team who was doing ok. Then a boy named Cassie tried and he missed twice then he actually tried, and he missed.

My favorite is “The Eagle” because it is calm and nice. I think they did the speech and the rhymes well. For example “the wrinkled sea beneath crawls a he watches from his mountain walls”.

  15. The first poem, “ The Eagle”, is about and eagle that lands on a rock. Then he swoops down to get his prey.

The second poem, “ Casey at Bat”, is about a baseball player named Casey that is arrogant person. He strikes himself out because he did not like the first two pitches, and he missed the last one.

I choose “ Casey at Bat” because I thought it was funny and the poet had a very good use of words. It also had a Rhyme Scheme. A famous statement was mentioned, too.
Saying that “ There Is no joy in Mudville” Is like saying that “Everyone Is sad here”.

  16. “The Eagle” is about an eagle on a tall mountain close to the sun.
“Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball team. They have one inning left and two outs. It’s all up to Casey. Then, Casey gets two outs and the fans hate it. Next the pitcher throws the ball and Casey strikes out.
I chose “Casey at the Bat” because I love baseball, and I understood it a lot more. “Casey at the Bat” has a lot of detail. I thought Casey was a funny character.

  17. The first poem, “Casey at the Bat” was about a baseball game that Mudville was not going to win. Everyone was hoping that Casey would bat. Finally, when Casey went up to bat, he ignored the first two balls. When he tried to hit the last one, he missed. I felt like the tone was silly .

The second poem, “The Eagle” is about an eagle landing on a mountain. The second stanza was about it soaring over the ocean. The tone was serious. There was a lot of imagery and rhyme scheme.

My favorite was “Casey at the Bat”. It was just so ridiculous. For example, he was so arrogant that he ignored the first two balls, and he missed the last one. Also, in the text, everyone was calling the umpire a fraud.

Casey lost the game for his team and everyone was mad he did not swing.

The Eagle is about a eagle that finds alot of land and calls it its own land but it is gods land and I think the eagle is mad but he says he loves the blue sea around it.

I think Casey at bat is the winner because I could understand it more and I loved the rhyme scheme because the order was AAA BBB.Michel

The second poem “ If ,” by Rudyard Kipling is about a father talking to a son and saying that if you trust yourself you will be happy.

  24. “Casey at the Bat” is a good poem. I like casey at the bat because it teaches you to just do what you can do. It teaches you not to think you are so good and just hit the ball. My connection is I have been the best player for a team before.

I read “Mother to Son”. This was a great poem. She kept comparing her life to a crystal stair. This poem was a good poem. I do think “Casey at the Bat” was more funny. I liked the the writer’s craft in this poem.

I enjoyed “Casey at Bats” writer's craft more because the poet gave us more detail. For example, he told us the exact town it happened in. Also, I liked how he made it really funny. For example, a guy got lit on fire.

  26. The first poem, The Eagle is about an Eagle who is looking for prey, and he sees some and starts to fly. While he’s looking he takes his claws and grinds them into a mountain side.
The second poem, Casey at bat is about Casey the best player striking out. He stands up to the bat, and doesn't like the pitch and gets one strike. He didn't like the second pitch and he got his second strike. Lastly, he got his bat and swung, but missed everyone was angry and sad especially Casey.
I think the winner is Casey at the bat because it was a cliffhanger before she got struck out. I loved the imagery because you could really imagine the ball game when he struck out. I also liked the similes because they were very convincing.
