Poetry Madness: Game 2

Read Game 2 poems, Roger the Dog and The Falling Star. Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, Dust of Snow, is about a boy who is having a bad day until a crow lands on the tree above him, shakes the dust of snow on him, and gives his heart a change of mood.

The second poem, Mother to Son, is about a mother and a son. The mother had a rough life which she compared to a set of stairs that she had a rough time climbing. She told her son to not give up and keep moving forward when life gets hard.

I choose Mother to Son as the winner because it touched my heart and showed me that no matter if something is hard you should always move forward. Also, the author repeated lines to emphasize the message. It is a great story because it teaches you to persevere. That is why I chose Mother to Son.

  1. The first poem, “Dust of Snow”, is mostly about how one thing can change your day. I feel like the first stanza was when he was grumpy and upset, and the second stanza was positive. The writer’s craft in this poem was rhyme scheme and imagery.

The second poem, Mother to Son was serious. It was mostly about how life can be hard, but you have to get through it. She was telling him to persevere. In the last four lines it was saying how she still has life left to live, and how it’s not all over. The writer’s craft, in my opinion was word play and imagery.

I choose “Mother to Son” as the winner because I felt like it had a more significant meaning. I liked both, but I liked the meaning of of “Mother to Son”. I also like how Langston Hughes talked about how she still has some more time to live and how she might still be able to climb the crystal stair.

  3. The poem “Roger the Dog” is a poem about a lazy dog who loves to eat and sleep. The poem talks about how Roger is very lazy and uses all his energy to eat.

The second poem “The Falling Star” is a poem is about a falling star, and talks about how precious stars are.

I choose “Roger the Dog” as the winner because I think it is funny how the dog is so lazy and does funny things. I also noticed rhyming in almost every stanza. I think it is funny because the dog doesn’t do much at all. For example, one of rhymes were He will not race, he will not romp, He saves his strength for gobble and chomp.

  4. “Roger the Dog” is about a dog named Roger. Roger will wake up, get in front of the fire, goes to sleep, bathes in cowclap, eats, and then he sleeps.
“The Falling Star” is about a shooting star and how good it looks.
I chose “Roger the Dog” because I love dogs. I made a connection with my dog when he sleeps in front of the fire. The one thing that really got me was when he bathed in cowclap. I thought that was really funny.

  5. The first poem, “Roger the dog”, is about a dog who is lazy and fat. According to the poem, he also likes to keep warm. In stanza 2, the poet states that “ he hogs the fire, he bakes his head, as if it were a loaf of bread”.

The second poem, “The Falling Star”, is about someone seeing a shooting star and describing what it looked like. Then the poem says that the star will be “forever gone”.

I choose “ Roger the Dog” because it is funny. It uses metaphors, like this one; “ he bakes his head”. This means that he keeps his head warm. The poem says that he is a fat, lazy dog, and that is the exact replica of my dog, Daisy. The only difference is that she is a girl and that she doesn’t have fleas.

  6. I think the first poem ‘’ Roger The Dog ‘’ is about a dog names Roger that is very lazy and likes to lay and sleep in bed.

I think the second poem ‘’ The Falling Star’’ is about a shooting star that goes across the sky and a kid makes a wish.

In my opinion I think ‘’ The Falling Star ‘’ is a better poem. I think it is a better poem because it describes more stuff . For example , like a boy / girl making a wish which is very visual.I also like it because it’s about a wish. That’s why I think ‘’ The Falling Star’’ is a better poem.

I bet the family is sad.

“Roger the Dog” is about a funny dog who rolls in cow dung and is very lazy. He sleeps too much, and he only wakes up to eat some flees. Roger eats alot to because it says he licks his bowl clean.

“The Falling Star” is about a person seeing a star “sliding down the sky.” He talks about how it shouldn’t be sold, and you should make a wish on it.

MY FAVORITE WAS…… “Roger the Dog” because the rhyming is funny in the poem. I thought it was funny because it talked about him rolling in cow dung and being lazy. It was just a overall funny poem.

  11. “Roger the Dog” is about a lazy dog named Roger who only eats and sleeps. It’s actually mostly sleeping.

“The Falling Star” is telling us how that when a shooting star comes by, the only thing it’s good for is wish on before it disappears forever.

I chose “The Falling Star” because it tells the readers that a falling star is a once in a lifetime chance sometimes and it should make your wish while you still can.

2.”The Falling Star” is about how a falling star is way to precious for all mankind.

    3. I chose “The Falling Star” because it is very cheary and it makes me think of a star pancing across the sky like a skipping stone. For example it says “I saw a star slide down the sky” or how it said “to lovely to be bought or sold”.

  14. “Falling Star” by Sara Teasdale is about a lady who saw a shooting star and she said it was just beautiful, and she made a wish on it and it disappeared.

The next poem is by Ted Hughes and it is called “Roger the Dog”. It is about a dog that loves to be lazy and loves to snuggle he also likes food and playing.

My favorite is “Falling Star.” I loved this because it was touching to me she saw a star then it disappeared. I think it was really cool. I do think it also had good speech. For example, I saw the star slide down the sky. Personally I think it was a really great passage.

  15. The first poem, Roger the Dog, was about a dog that LOVES TO SLEEP! I felt like the tone of this story was calm. Most of the poem was about how he was very hard to wake up. It is also about him being lazy. The writer’s craft was mostly rhyme and imagery.

The second poem, “The Falling Star”, is about a girl or a boy making a wish. The tone, in my opinion, was positive. The first two lines meant that the star was beautiful. The last four lines were about it being priceless. There was a lot of imagery and rhyming.

The second poem, “The Falling Star”, was my favorite. I like the idea of watching a star and making a wish. I also like Sara Teasdale saying the falling star is priceless. I like the description, “ I saw a star slide down the sky,”.

  17. The first poem, Roger the Dog, is about an old, lazy, dog. I think the tone is sweet. I think that because it’s about an owner and a dog and I think it’s sweet to write about that.

The Falling Star is the second poem and I think it’s about someone who sees a falling star and they really enjoy it.

I think Roger the Dog won this round because I really enjoy how the writer tells about their dog. It makes me feel like Roger is a dog in the 1800s and he is traveling on a wagon with his owner. I think it’s kind of funny because Roger is very lazy. I’m a dog lover so I really love this poem even though Roger rolls around in cow poop!

The second poem “The Falling Star” is about someone who sees a star and doesn't recognize what it is till the end of the poem.

My winner is “ The Falling Star” because I really understand what it is trying to tell me. Also, because between those poems, “The Falling Star” catches my eye. For example, when it talks about the star shining bright in the night sky it reminds me of someone different in a group of people who are the same.
