I think that “Mother to Son” should win because it goes very deep and I feel like it has a much more important meaning than “Roger the Dog”. I also like this poem because I can make a connection with it. My connection is that a lot of the books I read are about slavery and how people work as hard as they can and their owners still don’t treat them well. “Mother to Son” also has good poet’s craft also. For example, the whole poem is basically a metaphor because someone is comparing their life to a crystal stair. I knew that when the poet said,”My life ain’t no crystal stair”. This poem also used imagery when it said,”It’s had tacks in it,and splinters, and places where boards are torn up,” because I thought of a rough, worn staircase when the poet said that.
ReplyDelete“Mother to Son” is definitely the winner!
Naw bro
Deletegood choose really deep meaning
DeleteI agree with Cruz
DeleteThe winner is… Roger the dog!!!!!!!!!!! I have a connection with it because I have a dog that is puny and it exercises. And if I have a dog like that then it will not be fun to try to play with her. I also like the rhyme scheme and the imagery. For example it says he hogs the fire he bakes his head. As if it were a loaf of bread. Another example it says he works as hard as you think. Finishing his dinner dish. I choose Roger the dog as the champion.
ReplyDelete"Mother to Son" will win,not "Roger the Dog"!
DeleteI think that “Roger the Dog” is the winner. I really connected with the poem because I have 2 dogs that can be very lazy at times. When my tiny dog gets wet, she looks like a hairy grandpa. These things made me really connect with the poem. I liked how the poem was written in couplets. For example, “ Asleep he wheezes at his ease. He only wakes to scratch his flees.” I also liked the alliterations. For example,” Emptying his dinner dish.” All these things in my opinion makes“Roger the Dog,” my true winner. (not that Mother to Son was bad)
ReplyDeleteI like the poem, Roger the Dog because it is about a lazy dog named Roger. I also like this poem because I love dogs and many other types of animals.
ReplyDeleteMy connection to this poem is that when my dog was sick she was very lazy and didn’t want to get up and play.
I chose Roger the Dog as my winner because I love animals and dogs are cool. Another reason I liked this poem was because it multiple examples of writers craft. It uses alliteration when it says, ‘Then he flops flat and digs down deep.’ This poem also uses couplets and a rhyme scheme. For example, in the poem it says, ‘He will not race. He will not romp. He saves his strength for a gobble and chomp.’ Overall, I think that this is a great poem about a lazy dog that will only eat and sleep. These are the reasons why I chose this poem as the winner.
I choose Roger The Dog. I think that it should win because it has great poet’s craft. It has a rhyme scheme of AABB. It is very fun to read because it is about a fat dog. I really enjoyed reading this poem. I choose Roger The Dog.
ReplyDeleteI can make a connection with Roger The Dog because I have two fat dogs. They are lazy, but they put a lot of energy into eating. I think I have two Rogers in my house.
I really like the poem’s poet’s craft. It had a great rhyme scheme of AABB. It also uses alliteration when it says: digs down deep.
I really like Roger The Dog. It is the chosen one!
I think the poem Mother to Son should win because I think it has a deeper meaning and is about slavery and segregation. I also think it should win because it was written by a black man.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to the poem Mother to Son because people tell me that life doesn’t always go the way I want it to and that it will be hard.
I like the poet’s craft in Mother to Son a lot. The rhyme scheme is ABCDEFB. I like how the Mother compared life to crystal stairs. Also, I like the imagery of torn up floors and and sharp nails sticking out of the floors.
Mother to Son is definitely the best poem and should win
I think that mother to son is about a slave teaching her kid to never give up. I choose this poem because it has a very deep meaning. I think that Roger the Dog was just not as important as Mother To Son. I can relate to this because my parents love me alot. I know that my parent also don’t want me to give up on my dreams. I like how he used imagery to put a picture in the readers head. I thought of a mom in the slave house talking to her kid on the bed. She is about to get sold and is telling her kid to never give up.

ReplyDeleteRoger the Dog should be the champion! I think this because it’s a poem that changes the way I think about lazy dogs.
ReplyDeleteI relate to this poem because it reminds me of my old dog when he was older. He used to lay and sleep wherever he prefered. He was similar to Roger in many ways.
I enjoyed the similes that the author wrote. For example, he stated,”Then flops flat, and digs down deep, like a miner, into sleep.” I also loved the alliteration. As it says above, the author wrote,”Flops flat,” and,”Digs down deep.” Roger the Dog is definitely the winner!
Mother to Son is about a mom who had a rough time in life. She is telling her son what to do when it becomes hard and to just keep climbing.
ReplyDeleteI can make a connection when I am in a tough situation. I go to my mom or dad and ask for advice on what to do in my situation. They give some tips on what to do and I follow them.
I chose Mother to Son because it as a deeper meaning when a mother goes through a tough time and when her son is in a situation his mom will help him. I used Rhyme Scheme for example, ABCDEFG etc. For the other writers craft is Imergy because I can see what is happening.
I like Roger The Dog more because of two reasons one because I was about to name my dog roger, and the second reason is I love my dogs so much and I would do anything for them.
ReplyDeleteThe writers craft in Roger The Dog are a rhyme scheme when it says,” Aslleep he wheezes at his ease. He only wakes to the scratch his fleas. It also has couplets on all of the lines.
I chose Roger The Dog.
Mother to Son has a deeper meaning to me because the woman was probably a slave or mistreated. I still like Roger the Dog more because Roger the Dog is really funny. I really like how the poem is made too. For example, I love when it says, “He will not race, he will not romp, he saves his strength for gobble and chomp.”
ReplyDeleteMy connection with Roger the Dog is that my dog doesn’t like to exercise but likes to eat. A connection with Mother to Son is that I have read a book called Pink and Say and in that story some of people are slaves.
I really like Roger the Dog’s poet craft because it really paints a picture in my mind when it says, “He’ll work as hard as you could wish emptying his dinner dish,” so that is imagery. Another imagery for Roger the Dog is when it says, “He’ll work as hard as it gets emptying his dinner dish.” I pick Roger the Dog for the winner of poetry madness.
I choose Mother to Son because it is very meaningful. It also had very good imagery.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Mother to Son because my great grandfather died when he was going threw a hard time.
Roger the Dog had very good imagery. For example, the picture that popped in my was of a mom and a son that are slaves. The whole poem is also a metaphor. The metaphor is a mom comparing her life to a slave. For example, the poem says “ My life ain’t no crystal stair.”
I choose Mother to Son.
I choose Mother to Son as the winner because this means way more than Roger the Dog to me.
ReplyDeleteI connect with the poem Mother to Son because I’m very close with my mother. Also, in the book the mother gives the son advice, and my mother gives me really good advice.
I like the poet’s craft in Mother to Son. There is a good simile. For example, “ Life for me ain’t been like no crystal stair.” And I also like the Imagery. For example, when it says “ Life for me ain’t been like no crystal stair.” In my head I can imagine the crystal stairs.
This is why I choose “ Mother to Son”
I think that Roger the Dog should win because it is a funny poem. For example, I like it because it is about a fat and overweight dog who is very lazy. Also, it just sleeps all day, and when his owner tries to take him on a walk he does not even get up. Finally, I like this poem because I like dogs.
ReplyDeleteI can make a connection with Roger the Dog. For example, I have a friend named Camden, and she has a dog named Louie. Louie is on a diet and is very lazy. He eats too much food.
A writer’s craft is liked in Roger the Dog was imagery. For example, when it says you can roll him with your foot it put a picture in my mind. Another writer’s craft was alliteration. For example, it say flops flat, and digs down deep. I choose Roger the Dog as the winner.
I think that Mother to Son should be the winner because it has a deeper meaning. The person who made this was probably against slavery.
ReplyDeleteI can connect with Roger the Dog because I have a pretty lazy dog. He usually only works for food or to chase squirrels.
I choose Mother to Son. There is a metaphor when she says life ain’t been no crystal stair. It also has imagery you can see the stairs that are dirty and broken.
As the winner I chose Roger the Dog as the winner because.
ReplyDeleteI have a connection with Roger the Dog. My dog is pretty lazy sometimes and this poem reminds me of him. And I love my dog a lot.
I like the writer's craft in Roger The Dog more because. It has imagery I can imagine that someone is rolling over a dog it would be so funny.
Also there is onomatopoeia when it says chomp.
And that is why I chose Roger the Dog as the winner/champion.
Mother To Son should win the championship because the meaning is very strong and true. The meaning is to persevere and never give up. I also really like how the mom wants her son to stay strong even though it will get hard.
ReplyDeleteI connect to the poem because I know how it feels to want to give up when it gets hard. For example, one day when my friend from gymnastics got her kip, I got very determined to get mine. I tried as hard as I could at gymnastics practice to get it, but every time I tried, my wrists didn’t shift enough, and I fell. After days of practice, I wanted to give up because I thought it was to hard. Just when I wanted to quit, my friend can up to me and told me how she got her kip. I used her advice on the next day of practice, and my coach said that I could I try a kip. I attempted a kip, thinking about my friend’s advice, and before I knew it, I had made my kip.
The writer's craft in Mother to Son is imagery when the poem reads, “It’s has tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up.” There is also a metaphor when the poem reads, “ Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.”
I choose Mother to Son as the winner.
I think Roger The Dog should win because it is a funny poem, and a poem that you read at night before you go to bed. Also, I think it should win is because it has really good writer’s craft in it.
ReplyDeleteMy connection with Roger The Dog is that when I was at my cousin’s house in Mississippi. He has a dog that is really old. All the dog likes to do is eat, sleep, and do nothing. When we put him on the trampoline all he did was lay down on the side.
I think Roger The Dog has the best writer’s craft in it. It has rhyme scheme in it. For example, The rhyme scheme for the first stanza is A, A, B, B. Also, it has imagery in it. For example, I can imagine the dog just sleeping and eating his food.
For the Championship game I chose Roger the dog, I chose this poem because it has amazing Writer's Craft like throughout the poem everything rhymes.
ReplyDeleteMy connection to Roger the dog is that my dog is very fat and lazy and won’t get up under any circumstances and he eats to much food.
There is a lot of writers craft in Roger the dog, For example, the whole thing is writen in couplets He’s just a sack of snoring dog. You can lug him like a log. It also has a rhyme scheme of AABBCCDDEEFF.
I chose Roger the dog.
I think that Roger the Dog should win the championship because it was funny.
ReplyDeleteI connect with the poem because I have seen lazy dogs. That do not do anything.
I like the writer’s craft because it uses alliteration and similes. It uses alliteration when it says , “digs down deep.” It uses similes when it says ,”like a miner, into sleep.”
I think Roger the dog should win because It spoke to my heart the best. For example, the owner loved his dog and the dog loved his owner. So it spoke to me the most because most owners love their dog’s like I used to love mine.
ReplyDeleteMy connection with this story is, I used to have a dog who would do nothing but sleep, eat, and get loved. He did this because he was really, really, really, old. He loved me and I loved him. I also think he reminds me of Roger because they both hate going for walks. My dog sometimes would like a walk but most of the time, he did not like it.
I like Roger the dogs writer's craft better because it used couplets in the story. For example, there was 8 lines, and 8 divided by 2 is four. I also liked how it used a rhyme scheme of (aabbaabb)
I choose Roger the dog as the winner!
R.I.P Atikas
Deleteit's spelled Atticus
DeleteYou didn't capitalize the d in Dog so yeah bye as you say.
DeleteRoger the Dog should win the Championship.
ReplyDeleteI connect to the poem because I used to have a dog and he wasn't lazy but he still was the best dog ever just like the owner of Roger thought he was.
In Roger the Dog there are similes such as, "You can lug him like a log", and in that sentence there is also alliteration. That is why Roger the Dog should win the championship because of those reasons.
I think the poem Roger the Dog should win because it’s a funny poem about a really, lazy dog. The dog, Roger, never wants to do anything at all. The poem said, “I take him out to exercise, He rolls in cowclap(cow poop) up to his eyes.
ReplyDeleteI can make a connection to Roger the Dog. I had the flu, and me and my mom were so lazy. I remember my dad had to bring us ice cream we were so sick.
I think the poem Roger the Dog had the best writers craft. The poem had rhyme scheme. For example, “Then flops flat, and dig down deep, like a miner, into sleep.
I chose the poem Roger the Dog as the winner.
I think Mother to Son should be the champ because it has a way way way way way way way way way way way way deeper meaning than Roger the Dog( which that poem is a silly silly), why you may ask because the mother is talking to her son about how life is not easy, and how there will be ups and downs in someone's life.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Mother to Son because my mom tells me to never give up even if it is hard. That is why the song “ If You Try Your Best But You Don’t Succeed “ is very special to me. Also, life will have the goods and bads, but sometimes I either choose to power through them or whimp out.
I like Roger to Dogs imagery because it paints a big picture in my brain, and it is written in couplets which I like EX: He hogs the fire, he bakes his head
As if it were a loaf of bread. An example of imagery is: Then flops flat, and digs down deep, like a miner, into sleep. That paints a big picture in my mind.
I choose Mother to Son
I think that Roger The Dog should win because I have two dogs , and I know the real way they are. They can play with you and have fun.Only they are lazy when they are tired usually in the morning or at night. I like the writer's craft to in Roger The Dog because I liked the couplets. Ease fleas, head bread, dog, log. I also like the alliteration with all the he’s.
ReplyDeletedon't look at this please!
DeleteI think that Roger the Dog should win the championship because it was funny.
ReplyDeleteI connect with the poem because I have seen lazy dogs that do not do anything.
I like the writer’s craft because it uses alliteration and similes. It uses alliteration when it says , “digs down deep.” It uses similes when it says ,”like a miner, into sleep.”

ReplyDeleteI think Roger The Dog will win because I really like how it connects to me better and it has good writer’s craft.
ReplyDeleteHow Roger The Dog connects to me is because in my free time, when I want to, I relax on the couch. Sometimes I call for my mom to get me some food, which is kind of being bossy, but she gets me some food. Roger The Dog doesn’t even have to get up or call for food, it just comes. Usually, for me, I have to go get my own food and do it all by myself. Not cooking though.
The writer’s craft in Roger The Dog is rhyme scheme. It goes like aabb. The other type of writer’s craft is similes because in one part of the story it says, “ You can lug him like a log.”
Those are the writer’s craft that is in Roger The Dog.
That is why I choose Roger The Dog!!!! WHA HOO!!!!
I think Mother to Son should win because I think a lot of people have connections with it. My parents teach me and my sister lessons all the time.
ReplyDeleteI connect with the poem because sometimes we have to teach our dog lessons by not letting him have a bone or go swimming with us and I feel like he learns his lessons (sort of).
I like repetition because at the beginning when it says, “Life ain’t been no crystal stair ”. It also says that at the end. I also like the personification because life doesn’t have sprinters in it.
I choose Mother to Son as the winner.
I think Mother To Son should win. Because it is a meaningful poem, and it basically is saying don’t give up even though you don’t get any encouragement or anything they have. Just try your best don’t give up keep trying. You can do it and almost every word is a word of encouragement.
ReplyDeleteI connect with my mom. She is encouraging and she says keep trying or I know you’re smart you just have to dig down deeper. Life isn't going to be easy.
I saw repetition when it says”and (line 4-6)I saw imagery when it said”splinters, boards all torn up,no carpet on the floor(lines 4-6)”
“Mother to Son” should win because it has a better meaning. The meaning of "Mother to Son" is even though life will be hard, you always have to keep going because you don’t truly fail in life until you give up.
ReplyDeleteI can connect with this poem because I have read books about slavery, and this is a poem about a woman who was probably a slave telling her son to never give up.
I like the writer’s craft in “Mother to Son.” It has a simile and it compares life to a rickety old staircase. It also has repetition because it says “Life ain’t been no crystal stair,” twice.
“Mother to Son” is definitely the winner.
This is really good, Harper!
DeleteFor my opinion, I choose Mother To Son. As my winner. They should win.
ReplyDeleteI connect to it because I have had a pep talk with my mom before.
For the writer's craft it had Repetition and metaphors.
bye...
DeleteThis is tiny!!!!
DeleteI know right!
Deletefor the metaphors it said the crystal stair, and the Repetition it kept saying keep on going or never give up.
DeleteThat is so rude for you to say that Van
DeleteI agree with Harper. That is very rude, Van.
DeleteI think I will pick the poem, “Mother to Son,” as the winning poem!!!
ReplyDeleteThe main reason why I pick it is because it is very inspirational. The mother slave is telling her son to always keep climbing and do not back down! I also described the poem, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” like a big pep talk, so I also think that this poem is like a big pep talk too.
I can make a big connection to, “Mother to Son” because one time I was reading this book called, The Underground Abductor. The book was about a person named Harriet Tubman who freed slaves. Well in the book her mom tells her something similar to what the poem, “Mother to Son,” says, like it kind of has the same concept.
In the poem, “Mother to Son,” the poem has wordplay and repetition. Example of word play, “Turnin’ corners.” Then for repetition the poem says, “crystal stair,” two times.
I pick as the winner “Mother to Son” because I am sure that all of us have a mother that tells them that life is a journey and that whatever happens it is ok. Also, I think that what the mother said is right and I think all of us would be the same.
ReplyDeleteI make a connection to “Mother to Son” because my mother always says to do the same thing and that even if life gets hard keep on pushing through.
I chose “Mother to Son” for the writer’s craft because I like the Imargy when it says “life ain't no crystal stair. Also, I like the format of ABCDEFG in the poem…
I CHOSE “MOTHER TO SON”!!
I think that “Mother to Son” should win the championship. Here is why. “Mother to Son” has a more important meaning. “Mother to Son” is about a slave. The mom, who was the slave, is telling her son to never give up in life even when it gets hard. Even though “Roger the Dog” is a good poem, I like “Mother to Son” more.
ReplyDeleteI can connect with “Mother to Son” because my mom and dad tell me to never give up in life even when I want to.
I really like “Mother to Son’s” writing craft. “Mother to Son” uses metaphors. This poem uses a lot of metaphors. Here is one example from the poem. It says, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” This poem also uses imagery. Here is an example. It says, “Life has had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up.” When I read this, I see a torn up staircase, in an old house, with cobwebs and torn carpet. I also see dusty shelves and old books with ripped pages.
I choose, “Mother to Son” as the winner!
Mother To Son has a deeper meaning because it’s about a mom who is giving her son advice about life.
ReplyDeleteOne connection I can make is that my mom tells me to take time in life and she always gives me advice.
In this poem I noticed 2 writer’s craft. One was repetition, it repeated the phrase”Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.’’ The second writer’s craft was a metaphor. For example it was comparing life a crystal stair. Thats why I chose Mother To Son!
