Elite 8: Game 4

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 6 and Game 8.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

I chose Choosing Shoes because it is a fun poem. For example,I liked how they were choosing from all different kinds shoes.

I also liked this poem because I can make a connection. It is hard for me to chose what shoes I like best.

Finally I really liked this poem because it has poet's craft. For example, it had four quatrains and the rhyme scheme for each is AAAB. In each quatrain, the author talks about a different kinds of shoes. This is why I liked Choosing Shoes as the winner.

  1. The first poem, “Do You Carrot All For Me”, is the one that I made a connection with because I like puns and I think that they’re funny. This poem used lots of them, and it was hilarious.

I feel like “Do You Carrot All For Me “has a deeper meaning because even though it’s silly, it talks about how someone is asking someone else if they love them.

I also liked “Do You Carrot All For Me” because it used poet’s craft. For example, it used a metaphor when it said “With your turnip nose” because it’s saying that someone has a turnip nose. Also, it uses personification when it says “Lettuce marry” because we all know that lettuce can’t marry.

Do You Carrot All For Me is definitely the winner!

  2. The first poem (Do you carrot all for me) I can relate to because it is very realistic. The second poem ( The new suit) has a deeper meaning because that can happen to anyone. The winner is… Do you carrot all for me. Because it had good imagery For example it says My heart beets for you. When it says beets. It also has good personification. For example it says do you carrot all for me.

I choose do you carrot all for me.

  3. I think the poem Do You Carrot All For Me has the deeper meaning because it is about love. I think love is more meaningful than clothes are.

I can connect Do You Carrot All For Me to a song I’ve heard where a man is chasing after a woman but the woman refuses.

I really like the poet’s craft in Do You Carrot All For Me. The personification, “Lettuce marry,” is pretty funny, and I like the rhyme scheme. ABCDEFGH is the rhyme scheme.

I choose Do You Carrot All For Me as the winner.

  4. I think, “Do You Carrot All For Me,” has a deeper meaning. It was more heart touching because it was a love letter, and because he/she was pouring their heart out to someone they had a crush on.

My connection is with, “The New Suit,” and Legally Blond because Elle goes to a party that she thinks is a costume party but no one else is dressed up and she is humiliated.

I liked the writer's craft of, “Do You Carrot All For Me” more. I liked the imagery when it made me think of veggies and people getting married. I also liked personification. When it said, “Do you carrot all for me,” I’m thinking carrots can’t care.

I think “Do You Carrot All For Me,” is the true winner

  5. I like the meaning of The New Suit better than do you carrot all for me. I like the meaning because I is telling you that sometimes things are bad and you have to choose the good things. Also I think that it mean that be grateful of what you have and use what you already have.

I can make a connection with The New Suit. For example I went shopping with my mom once and I got some clothes. But, when I got to my house I realized that I should be grateful of what I have and think about the people who do not have anything.

One writer’s craft they used in Do You Carrot All For Me is word play. For example, they used words like lettuce, beets, carrot, and a lot more in the sentences. Another example is that it also says peach, pear, radish, and weed. I choose The new suit as the winner.

  6. Do you carrot all for me is about a husband and a wife about to be married but they are saying it in a vegetable language.

The new suit is about a guy who is trying not to spill on his new suit. Then he is saying he is going to wear old clothes next time because he does not want to have to worry about spilling.

I choose the new suit because it was more detailed than Do you carrot all for me. And it had better imagery than Do You Carrot All for me. For do you carrot all for me a picture could not put a picture in my head.

  7. I think Do You Carrot All For Me is good because it has a deeper meaning on caring for people.

I think The New Suit is pretty good because it explains that if you wear something really nice you might spill or damage it in some way.

Winner:I think the winner is Do You Carrot All For Me is better because it has a deeper meaning on caring because it explains a lot because it is saying nice things about people.

  8. The first poem Do You Carrot All For Me? Has a deeper meaning to me because I like food and this poem is about food.

I have more of a connection with The New Suit. because whenever I wear something nice I happen to get it messed up. Or I get dirt or mud all over it. Then the next time I go there I wear regular clothes.

I like the writer's craft in Do You Carrot All For Me? More because it has personification for ex: food cannot talk and in the poem food is talking. Also their is imagery I can imagine food talking to other food.

In the end I choose Do You Carrot All For Me? As the winner.

  9. The poem Do You Carrot all for me has a deeper meaning because I couldn’t live my life without food and this poem is mostly about food.

I have more of a connection with The New Suit because I usually have to wear something nice for Christmas and Easter and my mom says don’t eat stuff that can get all over your clothes.

I like the writer's craft more in The New Suit example the imagery is really good cause it feels like you can see the kid. And I also like another thing that is imagery example, “ Who’s that stuffed breathless inside that suit.”

    I choose THE NEW SUIT!!!

  10. I think that Do You Carrot All For Me is about a carrot proposing to a turnip with a poem that he wrote the poem. I like that he used carrots ana a turnip as the main characters and how he used vegetables to explain how he felt. I think that this was a very smart way to write a poem.

The New Suit is about a man who is wearing a really nice suit to his Birthday Party, but he gets so much advice like what to eat and what not to eat. So next year he will were old dirty cloths because he wants to eat cake and ice cream. I can relate to this because when I wear a suit I can’t get it dirty.

Both poems were very smart, but I choose the new suite because of how it relates to most people and because it puts a image in my head. Like when it said that people were telling him not to get dirty. This reminds me of when my mom tells me not to get dirty in a suit. Over all I just think it was better.

  11. The New Suit has a more important meaning to me because in the beginning he can not eat anything messy because he is wearing his new suit. Then the guy tells the person next year he will wear old clothes that he can eat messy food and not worry about getting his clothes messed up.

I can make a connection with the guy in The New Suit because when I am wearing nice clothes I can’t really eat anything messy, or when I go to a friends house I can't really run around and get dirty.

I liked Do you carrot all for me poet’s craft because it really painted a picture in my mind of the person when he says, “With your turnip nose and your radish face, You are a peach.” A poet’s craft for The New Suit is imagery because it paints a picture in my mind when the guy says, “And nothing about chocolate bombs that might explode!” I like The New Suit more.

I pick The New Suit for the winner of these two.

  12. My connection with The New Suit is when I was at a christmas party and I had to dress nice so my mom said could not eat anything that could get on my cloths. So I could not eat ice cream or anything that could drip on my cloths.

I think that Do You Carrot All For Me is more meaningful because it is about how someone is telling someone how they love them and how they are telling them how they look by using vegetables and fruits.

I think that Do You Carrot All For Me has writer’s craft in it. For example, when it says my heart beats for you, with your turnip nose. It is wordplay because the writer is using the word in a way that they are not supposed to be used for. Also it has imagery in it. For example, I can imagine someone telling someone how they love them.

  13. I liked the meaning of the poem The New Suit. It made me feel bad for this person who went to a party in a nice suit. He taught me to wear an old suit so I can eat all I want, too.
I also made a connection with the poem this poem. I sometimes go places with good food that drips and spills and my mom always says to be careful with it and don’t get too much of it.
I think The poem Do you Carrot all for me? has better poet’s craft. It has word play like,”My heart beets for you,” and,”Lettuce marry.” I also like how they don’t use much rhyme scheme which made it unique. Do you Carrot all for me? Has amazing poet’s craft.
I chose The New Suit as the winner!

  14. I chose the poem, Do You Carrot all for Me because it is a funny poem. For example, I liked how it switched important love words with fruits and vegetables.

I also thought this was a good poem because I could make a connection. This poem reminds me of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs because it replaces a lot of normal things with food.

Lastly, I chose this poem as the winner because it uses Imagery. For example, it says, ‘With your turnip nose and your radish face.’ It also uses personification when it says, ‘Lettuce marry.’ These are the reasons why I chose this poem as the winner.

  20. I think How to Eat a Poem has a deeper meaning because it is saying to be yourself. It is also saying to just do want you want to do.

I can make a connection on How to Eat a Poem. Sometimes when I eat with my mom I chew with my mouth open, and it makes a gross sound. The only way I find out I do it is when my mom gives me a look.

The poem with better writers craft is How to Eat a Poem. It had repetition, for example, it repeated “or” five times in each line. This poem also had rhyme scheme. For example, “Bite in… may run down your chin.”

I chose How to Eat a Poem as the winner.

  23. The first poem called Do you carrot all for me is more meaningful to me because the man was saying to someone that he cares for them. And do they care for him. I liked this because I can relate to it. For example, i’m always saying to my mom that I love her alot and I use leaves and grains of sands to describe it. And the man was using veggies to describe his love with the girl. This used great metaphors. For example, you are a peach. Also it used good word play. For example, my heart beets for you.

  24. For my winner I choose Do You Carrot at all For Me? It was about food asking if she cares for him, and they were flirting. Food flirting.

I have a connection because my sister plays and throws her food.

It used Imagery describing what they looked like, and Personification.

Also how to eat a poem wasn't really a poem it was like a cook book where theres like instructions.

  25. The poem, “Do you Carrot All For Me,” I guess has a bigger meaning because it is funny, but I do not really think that any of the poems have a big meaning. Well I picked, “Do You Carrot All For Me” because it is funny and it uses FUNNY puns like, “lettuce marry,” and “weed make a swell pear!”

I can make a connection with the poem, “How to Eat a Poem” because one time I was reading a poem and I marked the poem so much that I couldn’t read the words!

So for writer’s craft in the poem, “Do you Carrot All For me,” it uses some imagery because it is describing the vegetables. The poem uses word play, also known as (funny puns), See in paragraph 1. Then for the poem, “How to Eat a Poem,” the poem uses a rhyme scheme of: AA. The poem also uses repitition by saying, “or,” five times. The poem also uses imagery to by describing.

I can make connection to, How to Eat a Poem, When it says, Lick the juice that runs down your chin, because I do that when I eat an orange or an apple.

One of The writer’s craft that, How to eat a Poem, used, is haiku. For example, It said, May run down your chin, It is ready and ripe now, whenever you are. This poem also used a rhyme scheme when she said, Bite in, pick it up with your fingers, and lick the juice on your chin.

I choose, Do you Carrot at All for Me?, as the winner.

  27. I think that Do You Carrot All For Me has a better meaning. It’s talking about how much a man loves a woman and it’s very sweet. I think that it means that you should always cherish the person you love. Even if it’s just your mom and dad or someone in your family.

I can make a better connection with How To Eat A Poem. I have eaten foods that you have to be messy and sometimes it’s really enjoyable and sometimes it’s not.

The writer’s craft in Do You Carrot All For Me is word play. They use word play when they use vegetables instead of other words like instead of care at, they us carrot. Instead of let us, they use lettuce. They also use imagery. When they use all the vegetable words, I can imagine all those things they use as vegetables.

I chose Do You Carrot All For Me as the winner.

  30. My connection with How to Eat a Poem is that sometimes I pretend my food is something else. I sometimes think it is a kingdom or an animal.

The meaning of How to Eat a Poem is about someone saying that it is easier to eat a poem than anything else (they must be a picky eater).

I choose How to Eat a Poem because it sounds like they eat a lot and I like to eat a lot. I like the imagery because it explains how to eat it and I can imagine a person eating a poem. I also like the personification because juice doesn’t come down your chin when you eat a poem.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I like Do Carrot All For Me because it means as if everything in his poem is a fruit or vegetable. Like his heart beat is spelled like beet or like he said, “ lettuce mary,” is saying everything is a fruit or vegetable.

Another reason why I like Do You Carrot All For Me is because I connect to it because I like to make up words that aren’t even the meaning that i’m using. Like sometimes I do the same as this poem and use fruits or vegetables as my words.

The writer’s craft in this poem is personification because it is giving human traits to the fruit or vegetable. For example it says, “ With your turnip nose, “ and also, “ You are a peach, “ is personification.

I choose Do You Carrot All For Me?

  32. The poem Do you carrot all for me has deeper meaning because it’s about someone expressing it’s love and feelings. Like how some people care for me!

One connection I can make with the story is when my friends want to play with me and when they invite me over to their house that’s when they express their love to me. I do the same to them and I express my feelings to them.

In this poem one writer’s craft it used was a metaphor. An example was”You are a peach.”

  33. The first poem “ Do You Carrot all for Me?” is about a man who is using vegetables to describe a woman and tell her how he feels about her. For example, the poem read “ My heart beets for you” and “ If we cantaloupe, lettuce mary”. I like the imagery in the poem. For example, the poem read, “ With your turnip nose and your radish face” these lines made me imagine vegetables on people.

The second poem “The New Suit” is about a boy who has to wear a very tight suit to the party. He can’t eat icecream and has to drink juice very slowly. I like the part at the end where the poem reads “ Next year will be different, I’ll wear old clothes, be ready to dribble, and enjoy ice cream, cake, and everything else.” I also like the alliteration in the poem when it reads “ Striped suit, a terrific tie” My connection with the poem is T-S because one time when my parents went out to dinner, my dad’s tie was so tight that his face was turning red, and then when they came back from dinner, I had to help take of his tie and he looked so relieved. Aslo, the whole reason that my dad had to wear a tie was because it was a black tie event.

I really like the creativity in the poem “ Do you Carrot all for me?” because of the way the author used vegetables in it. The writer's craft I noticed was imagery. There was imagery when the poem read “ If we cantaloupe, lettuce marry.” those word can also be called “can’t elope, and let us marry”.

I choose “ Do you Carrot all for me?” as the true winner.
