Elite 8: Game 3

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 5 and Game 7.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, quatrain, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of a  proficient comment:

I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem because I thought it had a deeper meaning. For example, I liked how it was about a special moment and you should not waste it.

I also liked this poem because I can make a connection. I really enjoy watching beautiful stars too.

Finally, I really liked this poem because it had poet's craft. For example, it had a rhyme scheme AABBCC. Also, the author used couplets in the poem. For example, "I saw a star slide down the sky. Blinding the north as it went by."

This is why I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem.

  1. I think If has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a man who is telling his son to not be so full of yourself and treat people fairly. Another thing the man is saying to never doubt yourself even when everybody blames the problem on you. I think some of the situations he is telling his son not to do happened to that man when he was younger.

I have a connection with Roger the Dog, my dog is sometimes like Roger because he sometimes does not do anything and be lazy, and then when he sees food he goes running after it. I think Roger the Dog is funny and it is one of my favorite funny poems.

I like Roger the Dog’s poem craft more. Roger the Dog’s poem paints more of a picture in my mind like, “He’ll work as hard as you could wish emptying his dinner dish.” Another part that paints a picture in my mind is, “He is just a sack of snoring dog.” one imagery for If is, “Or walk with kings-nor lose the common touch.” Even though Roger the Dog has good writer’s craft I still like If more.
I pick If as the winner.

  2. Roger the Dog is about a very lazy dog who only puts energy in to eat.

If~ is about a dad telling his son if he can do this and that he can be a man.

I choose Roger the Dog because I like the couplets like Romp and Chomp. I have a connection I have a dog who is very lazy in only puts work in for food. I also like the imagery in Roger the Dog. Like when it says emptying his dinner dish.
    I choose Roger the Dog.

  3. The poem If is very heart-touching because of the lesson it teaches, which is to not brag or be proud and to never speak of your loss after you have to start over. At the end of the poem it says “ And-which is more-you’ll be a man, my son!” I think that the son is Jesus Christ and the father is God. I also like how it says to never doubt yourself even when everyone is blaming it on you and to let them doubt you too, which I think is when everyone was protesting that Jesus should get crucified and Jesus let them even though he could have stopped them.

The poem Roger The Dog is about a lazy dog named Roger who only saves his energy for eating. I think this poem is very funny because my dog is also lazy but she still likes to play and run even though she is very tiny.I also think the rhyme and beat of the poem was very catchy, for example it said, “ He hogs the fire, he bakes his head, as if it were a loaf of bread.” and the rhyme scheme was AABBCC etc. I also like the alliteration when it says “digs down deep” and “ dinner dish” .

I choose If as winner because of the meaning and the lesson. I like how the author put Jesus into the poem to remind us of how Jesus saved our sins and that he never bragged or complained of his loss. The rhyme scheme was really thought out and gave the poem rhythm. The rhyme scheme was ABABCDCD etc. That is why I chose If as the winner.

  4. This is just to say is about a husband who ate a plum that was not his and he is hoping he will be forgiven. It also had imagery.

Life doesn’t frighten me is about a guy who is talking about how he is not scared of anything. It also had imagery, It also had a steady rhyme scheme.

I choose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me as the winner because it was more meaningful than This is just to frighten me and it also had a rhyme scheme. And in my opinion i thought it had better imagery than this is just to say.

  5. First poem: I really like This Is Just To Say because it has a deeper feeling on honesty.

Second poem: I also think Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is good because it makes you feel strong because of how much he is not afraid of stuff and sometimes you can conquer your fears.

The winner is for me is This Is Just To Say. A reason is that it has a deeper meaning in honesty because whoever the character was he or she told the person she ate the plum. Another reason is that it is kind of funny that the person that at the plum told the person how good it was. That is why I chose This Is Just To Say

  6. I think that “Life Doesn’t frighten me” has the deeper meaning. I liked how it's telling you don't be afraid to try new things.

I made a connection with “This is Just to Say.” I sometimes find things in the freezer and eat it without asking if I can.

I liked the poets craft of “Life Doesn't Frighten me.” I liked the repetition of the line, “life doesn't frighten me at all.” I also liked how it used imagery when it said,” mean old mother goose lions on the loose,” I felt like I was actually there. All these things make Life Doesn't Frighten me have the better poets craft.

  7. The first poem (This is just to say) is more important to me because it is more realistic.

The second poem ( Life doesn’t frighten me) I can make a connection because I have watched a lot of Movies about people who say nothing frightens them.

The winner is… This is just to say because it had good imagery. For example I have eaten the plums. Another example is when it says they were so sweet and so cold. I choose This is just to say.

  8. The first poem,”This is Just to Say”, is the one I made a connection with. I have also eaten something that I later realized were probably someone else’s, and wished that I hadn’t done what I just did.

I feel like “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” has a deeper meaning than the other poem, because I think that it’s important not to let things frighten you and be brave. Also, I feel like it’s important to face your fears and not be held back by them.

I like “ Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” better because of the poet’s craft. I liked how it rhymed in couplets. For example, the poet said,“Shadows on the hall” and “Noises don’t frighten me at all.” Also, I liked how it used imagery to pop a picture into my head. For example, the poet said,”Shadows on the wall” and it popped a picture in my head of shadows.

‘Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” is definitely the winner!

  9. Dear mrs. Eads

I think that life doesn't frighten me is about a kid who is not afraid of the dark. I think this poem is very good because it shows how God is always with us. I also love how it give examples of what he is not afraid of. Also, I like how the rhyme scheme goes AABCCDEE ext. This connects to me because I know God is with me and he will keep me safe.

I think that this is just is about a kid admitting he did something he was not supposed to do. He says the he ate a plum that was not his and is very sorry. Also, I like how he gives reasons why he ate the plum. I think that this connects to the world because we need to confess our sins.

Both poems were pretty well written but one for me that was better is life doesn’t frighten me because of the rhyme scheme that goes AABCCDEE. Also, I think that is has a better connection to God. Also, because I thought it was just very well written.

  10. The first poem This Is Just To Say is about a person who eats everything before he was supposed to. This has a little bit more of a meaning to me because it reminds me of Me when I get home after school. I love to eat food even if we eat dinner five minutes later.

I have a connection with Life Doesn't frighten me because it reminds me of when I saw my first scary movie and I was Freaked out but my mom helped me through it so now when I see something scary I know what to do. And it has more of a connection with me is because I really like scary things.

I enjoy the poet’s craft on the poem Life Doesn’t Frighten Me more because there is imagery For ex: Strangers in the dark and big ghosts in a cloud. Also there is onomatopoeia in it when it says BOO!!! And the rhyme scheme is AAABBA Etc:

And that is why I chose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me As the winner.

  11. Life Doesn’t Frighten Me has a more important meaning
than This is Just to Say to me because it was about bravery. This is Just to Say is only about eating plums that they weren’t supposed to. Life Doesn’t Frighten Me has an incredible meaning.
I made a connection to This is Just to Say. Sometimes I eat things I’m not supposed to.
I think that Life Doesn’t Frighten Me has better poet’s craft. The author used great imagery when they said,”Shadows on the wall, noises down the hall. Life doesn’t frighten me at all.” I also like the repetition when they say,”Life doesn’t frighten me at all.”

  12. The poem This is Just to Say I have a connection because when I get home I usually take the sweetest thing out of my pantry. And I have a connection with this because I usually take my brothers things too.

The poem Life Doesn't Frighten me is more important to me because I don’t get frightened really easily. And I really like scary things. And it reminds me of when I saw a scary movie.

I like the writer’s craft more in Life Doesn’t Frighten Me because it has really good alliteration example, “ Mean old Mother Goose.”. And it has really good rhyme scheme example, AAABBACC this is really why I like this poem.

    Dear Mrs. Eads,
I read two poems and I want to tell you about them.
Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is about being brave. I think this is very important because it is important to be strong. I think this is a great message because sometimes it is hard to be brave.
This Is Just to Say is about someone who is mean and stole his friends plums from the icebox. I can make a connection with this because I stole my brother’s halloween candy, but it was good.
Life Doesn’t frighten me has great poet’s craft. It has a rhyme scheme of AAABB. It also uses imagery when they say, “Panthers in the park.”
I really liked reading It Is Just To Say, and that is why I choose it as a winner!

  14. My connection with Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is when I was younger I used to get scared because the attic door was in my room, and I thought someone would come out of it. But my mom would show me that there is nothing in the attic and nothing would come out of it. After my mom would show me that there was nothing in the attic I was not scared anymore.

I think that Life Doesn't Frighten Me is more meaningful because it is about how someone sees a bunch of scary stuff and doesn’t get scared. If I was that person I would be really scared and would be screaming.

I like Life Doesn’t Frighten Me more because it is a really good poem. I like it because it has rhyme scheme in it. For example, the rhyme scheme for the first stanza is A, A, A, B, A, C, C, A, D, D, A. Also I like it because has imagery in it. For example, I can imagine someone seeing all the scary stuff and not being scared.

  15. Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is about someone and there not afraid of anything except for their dreams.

Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is also good because there is a quote that goes perfectly with it it goes If your dreams don’t scare you there not big enough.

I choose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me. It has a good rhyme skeme AAABBACCADDA. It also has repitition it says doesn’t frighten me at all over and over. It also has great imagery stuff like don’t show me frogs and snakes.

  16. I chose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me because I think it has a more important meaning to me. For example, the guy is telling us that life doesn’t frighten him even if there is a panther in the park, or frogs and snakes. Life doesn’t frighten him.

My connection with the guy in This Is Just To Say is that I have eaten fruit that my mom was saving for dinner. Another connection with This Is Just To Say is that I had to be honest and tell my mom that I ate the fruit for dinner.

I liked the Imagery poet’s craft for This Is Just to Say because is really paints a picture in my mind of the guy apologising for eating the plums. A poet’s craft for Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is repetition because the poem is keep on saying, “Life doesn't frighten me.” Another poet’s craft foe Life Doesn’t Frighten me is imagery. For example, the guy says, “Panthers in the park strangers in the dark.” My pick for the winner of these two poems is Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.

  17. I think the poem, Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is about how a very brave and strong person doesn’t care what other people around her think about her. I made a connection with it because I always try to do my own thing and not care what other people think about me. This poem uses couplets and a rhyme scheme. For example, it says ‘ Shadows on the wall. Noises down the hall. No, life doesn’t frighten me at all.’ This poem had a lot of meaning to me.

The poem, This is Just to Say is about how someone stole some elses plums from the ice box (AKA refrigerator) and just wants to make them mad by saying it in the other person’s face. This poem uses quatrains and imagery. For example, it uses imagery when it says, ‘Forgive me. They were delicious. So sweet and so cold.

My favorite poem was Life Doesn’t Frighten Me. I liked this poem because this person doesn’t care what other people think of her and if someone is being rude to her she just smiles. This poem uses couplets and a rhyme scheme. For example, it says,‘ Shadows on the wall. Noises down the hall. No, life doesn’t frighten me at all.’ This was a great poem that really brought joy to kmy heart and made me want be just like that person.

  18. The poem Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is a very good poem, and more meaningful. I get scared a lot in life, and this poem tells me to stand up to my fears. I also like that it is written by a woman who is a historical figure throughout all the world.

I can connect to This is Just to Say because I steal my sister’s everything. Her candy, books, and stuffed animals. You name it, I steal it from her.

Finally, I like the poet’s craft in Life Doesn’t Frighten Me. The rhyme scheme is AAABBA etc. I also like the couplets like Mean old Mother
    Goose, Lions on the loose.

I choose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me as the winner.

  19. The poem Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is about a girl who is not frightened by life. I think that this poem is about God because at the end it says “ I can walk on the ocean floor and never have to breathe.” I also think that the whole poem represents God because God is not frightened by anything.

My connection is that some things don’t frighten me, such as frogs and snakes but a lot of things still frighten me. The writer's craft that I like is the rhyme scheme which is AAABBACCADDA etc. I also like the alliteration when the poem said “ Panthers in the park” .

Finally, I like the poem Life Doesn’t Frighten me because of the meaning which is how God is not frightened by anything because he made everything. I will think of this poem as a reminder that God can do everything.
I choose Life Doesn’t frighten Me as the winner.

  21. The first poem is called choosing shoes. It is about someone who is at the shoe shop, and is picking shoes. in the book It tells all the options on the shoes they have.

The second poem is called life doesn't frighten me. In this poem it tells all the things in the world that don't frighten them.

In the poem choosing shoes tells all the shoe choses there are. One writer's craft is repetition because at the beginning it says “new shoes new shoes.” Another writer's craft is quotrane because each paragraph has 4 lines.

    I pick choosing shoes.

  22. I choose Life Doesn’t Frighten me because I think it has a deeper meaning. It is saying that Don’t be scared God is with you. It is ok if you are scared I’m always with you.
I also choose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me for my connection because I am scared of some things and I always trust in God to help me in those situations. It is not a bad thing to be scared. Their are some things out their that only one person can help and that is God.
Finally, I really like the repetition in Life Doesn’t Frighten me all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all. For example, A,A,A,A,A,B,B.
I choose Life doesn’t Frighten Me as the winner.

  23. I choose Choosing shoes as my favorite out of the two because it talks about somebody that gets to see cool shoes, nice shoes, funny shoes, and all sorts of shoes but she doesn’t have the money to buy them. I think that it also shows that we should have a little bit of perspective because in our lives we can have nice things, but there are people in the world that don’t have enough money to buy nice things. So we should be a little more grateful for the things we have.

I can make a connection to choosing shoes because sometimes when I walk into a store I get hyped about shoes. BUT… my parents say no so that makes me want to cry, and go eat some junk food while binge watching a tv series. Even though this has nothing to do with the poem. I like shoes and you should to!!!

I really liked the writer's craft in life doesn’t frighten me the writer’s craft is rhyme scheme because the rhyme scheme was EX: AA, BB, CC, AND DD. That was the writer’s craft I liked in Life doesn’t frighten me.

I chose Choosing Shoes because I am cool.

  24. I think that Life Doesn’t Frighten Me has a better meaning. Its meaning is to not be afraid of things that aren’t scary. It makes no sense to be afraid of flowers or something like that, so you shouldn’t be afraid.

I can make a connection with Life Doesn’t Frighten Me. I have been in my bed at night and I here weird noises. I remember that it’s just the air conditioning so I don’t get scared.

The writer’s craft in Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is couplets. In almost every two lines there is a couplet. The first one is, “ shadows on the wall, noises down the hall.” It also shows repetition. It says the sentence, “ Life doesn’t frighten me at all,” multiple times.

I chose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me as the winner.

  26. Life Doesn’t Frighten Me is about someone saying that life doesn’t frighten them even if something scary happens.

I can make a connection with this because when I’m scared of something my parents tell me it’s fake and I become less afraid.

I choose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me because of my connection. I like the personification because you can’t walk on the ocean floor because you'd float to the surface. I also like the imagery because I can imagine a brave person because the whole story is about being not afraid.

I can make a connection on Choosing Shoes because I when I go to the store I see a lot of cool shoes, but the only ones I can shoes are black, white, and gray shoes for school.

The second poem, Life Doesn't Frighten Me, is about a person saying everything that frighten them. For example, it says, “ I can walk on the ocean floor, and never have to breathe,”

    Dear Mrs. Eads,

I choose the poem, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” for a deeper meaning because it is talking about a girl who is being positive about the future in her life. It is almost like a
HUGE PEP TALK!!! I really like how this person is really confident about herself. I mean she knows that her life is going to be hard so I think that is why she is doing it. I think the message is to always look bright about your future and what it holds.

I choose the poem, “Choosing Shoes,” as my connection because one day my mom told me to go get my sister for easter brunch. I walk into her room and she is like, “WHICH SHOES???!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! I NEED SHOES!!!!!!!!!!!” But do not worry she found some shoes, so it was all good.

So for the poem, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” There is a huge rhyme scheme of: AAABBACCADDAEEFFGGHHAIIAJJAKKLLAAAAAA!!! The poem has repitition. For example, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me at All,” they say that exactly seven times! The poem also uses alot of imagery too. Writer’s Craft count: 3! For the poem, “Choosing Shoes,” it has all kind of rhyming words in the same line, so I do not know if that counts as rhyme scheme, or not? The poem also has alliteration in it. For example, “Dandy-dance-by-night shoes.” The poem also has repitition. For example: “New shoes, new shoes.” The poem also has all quatrains. Writer’s Craft count: 4! It’s really close but I am going with, “Choosing Shoes,” for Writer’s Craft.

I choose, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” for my winner!

I also liked LIfe Doesn’t Frighten Me because I can make a connection. One connection I can make with this poem is that when I was little I used to be scared of the dark. This poem taught me how to be brave.

Finally, I really liked this poem because it had poet’s craft. For example the poem used repetition by repeating the fraze “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” Another writer’s craft it used was rhyme scheme. For example it used AAA BBA CCA DDA.

This is why I chose Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.
