Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Both classes will read "Mother to Son" and "Casey at the Bat".
In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more?
- Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc.
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.
Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:
Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.
My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit. I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.
I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South. For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners". I also enjoyed that the poem is a metaphor comparing life to a flight of stairs that is hard to climb. The poet's mother encourages him to never give up but keep trying even though life is hard.
I really like Mother to son because it teaches a lesson about being thankful of what you have and don’t always ask for what you don’t have. It showed me that because they did not have a lot.
ReplyDeleteI don’t really like Casey At Bat because it does reminds me when I struck out when there were 2 outs.
I think the winner is Mother to son because it teaches me about being thankful for what you have and don’t always ask for stuff.
I think that that answer is wong

DeleteMother To Son has more meaning to it because the mom is talking to her son about in life you do not get through it easy. Life is not always going to go your way.
ReplyDeleteI have more of a connection with the poem Casey At The Bat because I have been in the moment where there are two outs and you need one run to win it and bases are loaded. Then I strike out.
I like the poem Mother To Son more. I like it more because it has more meaning and the writer's craft is really good with it. There is imagery when you can imagine the mom telling her boy that life is not going to be easy and you have to be ready for that. And also there is rhyme scheme and it is ABCD etc: and that is why I like Mother To Son better.
I think that answer is wong
DeleteTheir is no right or wrong, just opinion
DeleteThe first poem I can relate to (CASEY AT BAT) because one of my friends struck out in a baseball game and we lost the game. I like that Mother to son has a deeper meaning because Mother to son I think it has a lot deeper meaning because it is about a mom talking to her son and how she is a slave and life was not perfect and she compared it to walking up stairs. She says that life has not been crystle clear and that you have to push through it. So the winner is… Casey At Bat because it had good imagery for example when he was up to bat. It also had good rhyme scheme for example blake and flake. I do like Casey at bat and i’m ready to see what comes next...
ReplyDeleteIt is good
DeleteI think Mother to son is way better

DeleteMother to Son is about a mother who is telling her son life ain’t easy and you need to take stairs not the elevator.
ReplyDeleteCasey at Bat is about Casey who is very full of himself and because of that he messes up his team. There ain’t no joy in mudville.
I choose Mother to Son because I think the advice this mother gives is very meaningful. I also think the meaning is more important. I think the other one is boring and meaningless. I also can make a connection with it when my mother gives me advice. It is a sweet moment. It uses imagery telling about her tough time. Ex: And turnin’ corners. I enjoy the writer’s craft of Mother to Son, too. She uses repetition when she says, “Life ain’t been no crystal stair,” I choose Mother to Son.
I think that answer is wong
DeleteThe first poem, Casey at Bat, I can relate to because I play softball and lots of other sports and I always feel disappointed when we could’ve won but we lost.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem, Mother to Son, Has a deeper meaning to me because one it's more serious and because I think it's sweet when she is telling her son to get back up and keep trying even though her life wasn't easy. `
I enjoyed the writer's craft Mother to Son better. I liked the imagery when it said, “ life for me has been no crystal stair.” I also liked How it Repeated the line “life for me has been no crystal stair.”
Mother To Son is very meaningful because it is a mom telling her son that it is not good to be a slave and to never go down this path always try your best and try to get a good job. So you never have to go through what I have gone through.
ReplyDeleteCasey At Bat is very good because it is about how everyone messes up in life, and you can’t do anything about it. I also liked it because baseball is a very fun sport and I watching and imagining about it And one time i lost the game for our team because i struck out.
I choose Mother To son because it had good imagery and metaphors. And it was more meaningful than Casey at bat for Example, it was about slaves and Casey at bat was about A guy striking out.
The first poem, Mother to Son, is about how a mother is talking to a son about how her life hasn’t been easy, but she never gave up, and she wants her son to do the same. This poem meant a lot more to me than the other one.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem, Casey at Bat,was the one I made a connection to. I have been in a soccer game where we were losing 2-1, and I got fouled inside the other team’s goalie box. I got to take a penalty shot, and I missed. I can imagine how everyone feels when that happens.
I choose Mother to Son as the winner because I thought that it really meant a lot more to me. This poem used a metaphor, because the poem is about a mother comparing her life to a crystal stair. For example,”Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Also, this poem used used imagery because when the poet said,”It’s had tacks in it, and boards torn up,and places with no carpet on the floor”, it popped a picture into my head.
The first poem, Mother to Son, is about a mother telling her son that her life was hard but she worked hard through it.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem, Casey at the bat, is about a man named Casey who everyone thinks is so great, but believes in himself way too much and strikes out twice.
I choose Mother to Son as the winner because I think it has a much deeper meaning, and I really like that it was written by a black man. The rhyme scheme is ABC etc. I love the comparison of life and stairs.
The first poem, Mother To Son, is about how a mom is telling her son that she was a slave and life was very hard. People were making her work a making her their servant. She is telling her son that life can be hard sometimes. I also like the meaning better. I also think that the poet’s craft was better.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem, Casey At The Bat, is about how the game was tied and Casey had a chance but he struck out. I can make a connection when in a soccer game it was tied. I was goalie and I let the goal past. I can imagine how the fans and players reactions were like.
I choose Mother To Son because I like how the Mother is telling the son that life can have some obstacles. Also, I like how she I comparing life to stairs. One writer’s craft I enjoyed was imagery. For example, I had a picture in my mind when it says I’se been a-climbin’ on, And reachin’ landin’s. Also another writer’s craft is repetition. For example, it repeats the word and a lot in the beginnings of sentences.
Mother to son is a very heart touching poem about a mother talking to her son about how life will be hard. I love how it shows the love that parents have for their children. This reminds me of how my parents love me and how good they take care of me. Over all this poem was very heart touching.
ReplyDeleteCasey At Bat is about a baseball player who all the fans love, but he gets to caught up in himself. He ends up striking out and loses the game for his team. I can relate to this because when I was younger There were two outs and the bases were loaded and I missed all three pitchas. This was a very good exciting poem that I would love to reads again.
Even though bothe poems were great, I would have to choose Mother To Son because of how close it is to my heart. It puts a picture in my head of a mother sitting down with her son and talking about life. It was also very well written.
Mother to Son was a poem about a mother that was telling her son things about the future and that in life we make a lot of mistakes, but there will always be hope for the future. This mom is telling her son that he should just try his best and that is the best that he can do. This poem uses imagery when it talks about the crystal stair. It says, ‘It’s had tacks in it, and splinters, boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor.
ReplyDeleteCasey at Bat is a good poem that I can relate to because sometimes when I’m am doing sports and my team is depending on I get soooooooooooo nervous that I mess up and let my team down. This poem uses a rhyme scheme. (AABBCCDD).......
My favorite poem was Casey at Bat. This poem had more meaning to me because it was funny and I can relate to disappointing my team and letting people down doing sports. This poem uses a rhyme scheme. (AABBCCDD)....... This poem also uses imagery when it is talking about him stepping on to the plate. This was a very close call, but I chose Casey at the bat as my winner.
Mother to Son is about a mom telling her son life is not a piece of cake. I have something in common with this because my mom always has little talks about this stuff with me.
ReplyDeleteCasey at Bat is about a guy and there loosing bye 2 and they have two people on bases and he strikes out. I have a small connection with this because in gymnastics we were so close to first place team but we were losing by 1 point and I was the last to compete and I fell!
I choose Mother to Son as a winner. I like how they used metaphors. For example, Life ain’t been no crystal stair. I saw a tiny bit of imagery I can see her climbing up stairs and talking to her son. That is why I chose Mother to Son.
Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is about a woman who was probably mistreated in her life, and the woman is trying to tell her son that life may not be fair all the time. I really like this poem and what this poem mean.
ReplyDeleteMy connection for Casey at Bat is that I have had those moments when there are two outs, and I am up at bat and strike out and lose the game.
I like Mother to Son’s poet craft more because it really paints a picture in my mind of what the women is saying. Another poets craft for Mother to Son is the similies like the women says, “ life is no crystal stair.” I really like Mother to Son, and I think it is my favorite poem yet. Mother to Son is my pick for the winner this time.
In my opinion, Mother to Son has a more important meaning because it was all about how the mother expected her life to be easy but it was more like a staircase that was hard to climb. I think the most important part was when she told her son that no matter what life throws at you, keep going.
ReplyDeleteI made a connection to Casey at Bat because just this weekend I was at a basketball game with no time left. We were down by two and I was the only one on on the court. I had to make two free throws in a row. I missed the first one off the back of the rim and we lost. I can imagine how Casey felt about striking out.
I think Mother to Son has better poetry craft because even though it didn’t rhyme, it still found a way to sound good. I liked the metaphor,”Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I also enjoyed the imagery. I could imagine a mom walking up stairs, struggling to get up them, and occasionally turning corners into dark rooms with no light.
The poem Casey at Bat is about boy named Casey who is up to bat after his team is losing by 2 points. He strikes out twice because the pitches weren’t his style. The people yell from the stands at the pitcher the first time Casey strikes out, but the second time, they yell at Casey because they thought that he would hit the ball. The third time Casey did try to hit the ball but he actually striked out and their team lost the game. Casey was very disappointed and all the fans yelled at him. I like the rhyme scheme AABB etc. I also like the imagery when the poem said “ Ten thousand eyes were on him as he rubbed his hands with dirt, five thousand tongues applauded when he wiped them with his shirt.” I also played softball and have struck out and it doesn’t feel good when you let your team down.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem Mother to Son is about a mother who I think might be a slave and life hasn’t been very easy for her. She tells her son that even though her life was hard, never give up and never look back. She compares her life to crystal stairs and that she is still climbing. I like the meaning to show perseverance even when it is hard. I also like the imagery when the mom says “ Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair, it had tracks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and and places with no carpet on the floor.
I choose the poem Mother to Son as the winner because it really touches my heart and has a deeper meaning for me. I really think that the poem teaches a great lesson to keep going and never look back, but to persevere. I think that the mom had a hard time but she was preparing her son for the hard times. That is why I chose Mother to Son as the winner.
The poem that means more to me is, Mother To Son.I think that I can relate to it because my own mother helps me when I am having a hard time, she reminds me that not everything is going to go the way that I planed and that life is not always going to be easy. I like how it used imagery because I like to imagine things in my head.
ReplyDeleteI choose, Mother to Son, as the winner because it had a more important meaning to me. One connection I can make to this poem is when she said to keep on trying and climbing, because that’s what I try to tell myself whenever something is hard for me to do. My favorite writer’s craft is Metaphor. One example of a metaphor in this poem is when she says, Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. I really enjoyed this poem.
ReplyDeleteI think that mother to son meant more to me because it had a way way way way way way way way way deeper meaning than Casey at the Bat, and also it touched my heart. Also, I liked that she always had hope for her kid.
ReplyDeleteI can make a connection because my mom and my dad always have hope for me, and show love to me, Also my parents are role models.
I liked the Writer's craft in Casey at bat because it rhymed and Mother to Son didn’t here is and example of the rhyme scheme EX: AA, BB, CC. etc.
I liked Mother to Son because it talked about how the mom went had a rough life and so she is telling her son what to do in life.
ReplyDeleteCasey at bat was a poem about a guy who striked out because he was careless about the game and everyone counted on him.
I choose Mother To Son because it is a way better poem in my opinion because it touched my heart about how the mother went through a tough time in life and how she told her son what to do when it comes your way in life. And, I liked how the author used Alliteration and Rhyme Scheme. It is still better than Casey at Bat.
I choose casey at bat because I like soft ball. And once my friend struck out when it was tied. One writer's craft is imagery because when I hear strike I think of cacher just screaming it. Another writer's craft is repetition because it says casey more than once.
ReplyDeleteI’m choosing casey At Bat because I love baseball. I have a connection to Casey At Bat because one time we were in the semi finals and their were two outs we had to hit the ball. Or we would lose the game. WE Hit A Home Run or it is called a walkoff. The game was over 6-5. I loved the repetition and imagery in Casey At Bat.
ReplyDeleteCasey At Bat has a better meaning to me because when someone is counting on you to knock them home and you strike out and make them lose. They get mad that they lost because one of the best players on their team struck out.
ReplyDeleteone time we were winning in soccer and I was the goalie with 5 minutes left. They got a free kick in the goalie box and everybody was cheering for me, and he kicks it and it goes in to tie it and we tied in the championship. I felt devastated because my team was counting on me.
I like Casey At Bats writers craft more because it used better imagery. For example, how the fans felt. And it used better personification. For example, Cooney died at second.
Please now vote for Casey at the bat yah! yah! yah!
I choose mother to son. I choose it because when my mom was growing up she always could never give up then they started a business and she went to collage and now she really happy but if she never gave up she would never been the person she is. Really I wouldn't have even been born. Aso it had Repetition, and metaphors.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the Bat is about a baseball player at the bat. He gets 3 strikes even though everybody is depending on him to get a home run.
ReplyDeleteMother to Son is about a mom telling her son about like and you have to keep going. I think the person who is telling the story is a slave.
I choose Mother to Son because I can relate to that because my mom is always teaching me life lessons about life. I like the couplet because it’s the same at the beginning and end when it says, “ Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair,” and, “ And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair”. I also like the imagery because I can imagine the boy walking up the crysle steps.
The poem that means more to me is, Mother To Son.I think that I can relate to it because my own mother helps me when I am having a hard time, she reminds me that not everything is going to go the way that I planed and that life is not always going to be easy. I like how it used imagery because I like to imagine things in my head. I like how it used a metaphor when it said “Life ain’t no crystal stair” I think it means life it not perfect.
ReplyDeleteThe poem that means more to me is Casey at bat.
ReplyDeleteI can make a text to self connection from Casey at Bat. At my school we had a project on making nonfiction posters. I never had time to work at it at school. It was the final day to work on it, so I had to finish it. I could finish it for homework, so that’s what I did. I worked on it at a place called Explorations, and I worked on it at home. I finally finished, and I was so happy. This wasn’t like Casey at bat, but it’s fine.
My favorite writers craft in Casey at Bat is imagery and rhyme scheme.
Mother to Son means more to me because it has a deeper meaning. The woman tells her son that life is not going to easy but you have keep going no matter what. I think this is a good life lesson because you will not get anywhere if you don’t do anything.
ReplyDeleteI made a connection with Casey at the Bat. I have never played baseball or softball but I have played sports. I know how it feels to be at the end of the end of a game and lose by just a little bit.
I liked the writer’s craft in Mother to Son. It showed a metaphor because it compared life to a staircase. To me it also showed imagery because I can imagine a mother telling her son a life lesson.
Mother To Son has a better meaning to me. I like the writer's craft and that my mother is always talking to me about the same thing. Also, It touches my heart and it makes me cry.I like the Imagery when the mom is talking and it gives a picture in my head.I Also Like the rime scheme.
ReplyDeleteThe other poem Casey At Bat is touch to me when he Strikes out because I have done that to 4 in soccer and it is not the best felling and I was very mad at myself and sad.But Mother To Son Touches my heart more.
Mother to son is about a mother that is talking to her son and talking about her childhood. I like the rhyme scheme. I like the poetry when all the Rhymes also I love the format .
I think the poem, “Mother to Son’s,” meaning is important to me because everything in that poem is true, and life is pretty hard to. I like how the poem said that life is like a long set of crystal stairs but it is hard to climb. I also like how a mother is telling her son this because he could use it later in life.
ReplyDeleteI can make a big connection to the poem, “Casey At the Bat” because in a basketball game it was 39-40, the other team was winning. I got the ball I dribbled down, I was about to pass it but two defenders came out of the blue and fouled me, [but of course the ref did not call it,] so I chucked it up and… AIRBALL!!! I imediatly got subbed out. I was really depressed, [but hey, I did not cry!!!]
Anyway, we lost the game because of me!!! So that is really close to what happened in, “Casey At the Bat.”
So, “Mother to Son,” it had two writers craft: Alliteration and word play. For example for word play, a-clibin, turnin’, and ‘cause. For alliteration at the beginning of the poem it said, “crystal stair,” then at the end it said, “crystal stair,” again at the end. For “Casey At the Bat,” it had a huge rhyme scheme, but it would take me to long because I am rushing right now at 2:55! It also had ALOT of imagery!!! It describes it like a movie!!! Overall I want, “Casey At the Bat,” to advance!
The first poem, Mother To Son, is about a mother who was a slave, is telling her son that life isn’t perfect to get through. If your black, it might be hard to get through things because people might offend you.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem, Casey At Bat, is about a guy who struck out in the worst time in a baseball game. The last inning, game, bases loaded, score 4 - 2 with 2 outs, Everyone was sad when Casey struck out in the worst part of the game
I choose Mother to son because it is really touching to me. It really reaches down in my heart and tells me I need to look around at the world better. The first type of writer’s craft is rhyme scheme. The second type of writer’s craft is imagery. That is why I think Mother To Son won.
The end
