Poetry Madness: Game 3

Read Game 3 poems, The Eagle and Casey at Bat . Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, so  this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless, memorable, and to be forever gone out of his life.

I think that the winner is the poem, The Falling Star. The reason I chose this poem is because it has great imagery, like when the woman stated,"Blinding the north as it went by". Another reason I chose this poem is the author uses the rhyme scheme: AA BB CC. This makes the poem fun to read and gives it a rhythm.

  1. The first poem, Casey At The Bat is about, a good day in Mudville and their is a baseball game.

The second poem, The eagle is about the way an eagle is and it can different feelings at different times.

I chose Casey At Bat because I love Baseball and It was kind of funny to see one of the best players strike out. I don’t know why he didn’t swing. I think the best players like to hit the third pitch and so do I.it’s just a poem but He said no they don’t frighten me when the the pitcher struck him out

  2. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle who sits on top of a mountain by an ocean. The eagle looks out at the ocean and dives.

The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a baseball player named Casey who is up to bat in the last inning. He believes in himself so much that he doesn’t pay attention until he strikes out twice, and he still doesn’t hit the ball.

I chose The Eagle as the winner because I thought it was written very well. The rhyme scheme is AAABBB. It has a simile in the line “ And like a thunderbolt he falls”. I think this poem is very pretty and I can really imagine being on a mountain when I read it.

  3. The first poem, “Casey at the Bat” was pretty long, but there was a rhyme scheme. Ex: AA, BB, CC, DD, EE, etc… But other than that NOTHING!!!

The second poem, “The Eagle” was a little too short, but then again there was a rhyme scheme ex: AAA and BBB. Then again NOTHING!!!

My vote is, “Casey at the Bat” because it made more sense than ,“The Eagle”, and I also prefer a pretty long poem over a pretty short because there is more to talk about and more to explain. So these are the reasons why I am picking,” Casey at the Bat”.

  4. The first poem , The Eagle , is about an eagle looking down at the things that have changed . He thinks about how he used to watch and be honored but now it is dying.

The second poem , Casey At Bat , is about Casey being confident but then strikes out. The author wrote this poem to entertain the reader.

I choose The Eagle , as the winner because the poem has a great storyline. I think that the author used great words that made the reader think. It also uses great words to describe change.

  5. The first poem, The Eagle, describes an eagle when it flies. This poem also describes an eagle when it sits on a branch. Lastly, this poem is also about where he is.

The second poem, Casey at the bat, is about a famous baseball player who everyone loves. But, when he goes up to bat, he strikes out. After that he can’t hit the ball any more.

I choose, The eagle, because though it is shorter, it makes more sense to me and I like how it puts a picture in my mind. This author used a really good rhyme scheme. For example, when it said, He watches from his mountain walls, and like a thunderbolt he falls. I really enjoyed this poem.

    down and get his prey.

The second poem, Casey at the bat, is about how a big baseball star is lazy and waits until the third second srike and on the third pitch he strikes out.

The winner is Casey at the bat, because it teaches you a lesson about not to do half everthing it tells you to give it you all. So thats why I pick Casey at the bat.

  8. I think The Eagle is about an eagle diving to the sea to get a fish. He saw it from his mountain cave.

Casey at the Bat is about everybody getting the ball except for Casey. Now no one likes him anymore because of that game.

I vote for The Eagle because I like looking out at a lake or the water when I’m in Montana. i like the imagery because sometimes I can see the fish in the water and I sometimes want to catch them. I’ve always wanted to fly and have a birds-eye-view of the sea from where I was flying.

    Love,
    Cooper

  9. The Eagle is about a bird who is flying over top of the sea He falls. And then I don’t know what. The next poem is about a baseball player who always hits the ball when he is up to bat. When his team is really struggling, they put him in expecting for a hit, but what happens is that he strikes out. I think Casey at bat won because it tells a lot about the story and is very funny. It has a good rhyme scheme that goes like a, b, a, b, a, b, a, b. That is why I think Casey at bat won. Go Casey!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. The first poem, Casey at the bat, is about a baseball game and their down by two runs and a player hits a double which puts runners on 3rd and 2nd base. Their best player, casey, is up to bat he strikes the 1st and 2nd pitches and gets ready for the third. The pitcher pitches the 3rd pitch...strike 3. They lost the game.
The second poem, The Eagle, is about a eagle, and a man who is describing the eagle and how strong and powerful like a “thunderbolt”.

  12. The Eagle is about A eagle that is lonely and does no have any friends, so he falls.

Casey at the Bat is about a baseball player that thinks he is amazing, but when he gives it a shot he is terrible.

I like Casey at the Bat a lot more. One reason why is Casey at the bat is a lot longer so it is more like a story that you can follow along with. Second is that you can rely use your imagination to tell the story. These are the reasons why I like this book better.

  14. The first poem, The Eagle is about what an eagle is like. How he watches over the sky, and how he dives in the water to get fish.

The second poem, Casey at the Bat is about a baseball game. There is a man named Casey that is playing and he thinks he is better than everyone else but he strikes out.

I chose Casey at the Bat because I liked how it was a funny story. I think it also taught a lesson about if you are cocky than you will not do as well as you would if you were just confident. I think the writer's craft is a rhyme scheme because some of the lines rhyme with each other.

  15. The first poem was describing what the eagle was doing. It said that “close to the sun with his lonely lands”I think that means that the eagle is lonely and he wants a friend.I thought that he was dying when it said”And like a thunderbolt he falls”.The second poem is about a SUPER good baseball player and how his teammates are not good and he is.One day at a game he went up the crowd cheered. He was up to bat and suddenly he misses. The crowd boos and screams stuff at the umpire like”kill him, kill the umpire”.The player told them to stop. He missed the the next hit he was not going to miss the next one he got ready.Everybody was happy that day except for the player who struck out.I chose the eagle because I feel bad for him and that poem is emotional.I think we should all choose the eagle because it is our animal in the united states.I like the eagle because it just makes you feel like you are in the poem.

  16. The first poem is about an eagle who was perched up on a hill waiting for his prey. The rhyme scheme it used was (aaabbb, I liked how it used a simile to compare it to a thunderbolt when he swoops down to grab his prey.

The second poem is about a sunny day in Mudville. Where they are playing baseball and are losing in the last inning the score was currently 4 to 2 everybody has made it to a base in a weird way. Casey is up to bat and the first pitch he let it go by and the umpire called it a strike. the crowd yelled boos and kill the ump. Then Casey lets the other ball go by and the ump calls it a strike again. Then the third time they were sure casey was going to hit it. Then the picture throws the ball and Casey stoke out. I like this because it painted a picture in my head of how the crowd felt when Casey struck out.

I choose Casey at bat because it painted a picture in my head when he struck out and how mad he was.

  17. The first poem, The Eagle, is about a eagle who is standing on mountain in a lonely land. The ocean is moving underneath and it’s watching it on the mountain peak. Then it falls off the mountain. This poem had rhyme scheme.

The second poem, Casey at the bat, is about a man named Casey who has pride of hitting a baseball. Everyone came to watch Casey hit the ball. The score was 2 to 4. Two players got out at base, but two got on second and third. It was Casey’s turn to bat. He didn’t like the first one, but it was still a strike. The crowd would have killed the umpire if it wasn’t for Casey raising his hand. The second pitch was a strike. The crowd knew Casey wouldn’t let another one go by. Casey hits the crowd with a mighty woosh. Somewhere in that town, children scream and the band play, but Casey had struck out.

I chose, The Eagle, as the winner because it was a good, calming poem about a eagle. The eagle is perched on a mountain top in an empty land. The eagle is watching the ocean in the sun on the peak of the mountain. Then the eagle falls.

Casey at bat vs The Eagle
So casey at bat is about this team who is losing 4 to 2. They have two people go up who aren't that good, but both get on base. So then there star player goes up. He misses all of them on purpose then strike two hits but he whiffed it they lost. Next the Eagle a guy has a Eagle, and is admiring it. My winner is easy the Eagle. I mean wow casey is just to cokey. I really like how the Eagle was rimming, and the words it used to describe it.

The second poem CASEY AT THE BAT is about a girl who feels bad about a score. She’s worried that she’s not going to get the money.

I chose CASEY AT THE BAT because it shows that you should trust in yourself. It also shows that even though you lose something you are still capable of something. This poem has rhyme scheme and it uses “AA” ‘BB’’

  20. The first poem, “The Eagle,” is about an eagle and what good stuff lies within the eagle. The poem uses a pretty good rhyme scheme which is good. I think it uses some metaphors to. It is basiclly just talking about what the eagle does.

The second poem, “Casey at the Bat,” is about a town’s team that is in a really tight game. It is the last inning and Casey’s team has two outs and two poeple on base. Everybody is waiting for Casey to go up and bat because he is really good. Casey strikes out, and everybody is very disapointed. The poem actually kind of teaches a lesson though… Do not always wait for the better player to do a miraculess thing, always have hope in the average player to. The poem also had a very good rhyme scheme too.

“Casey at the Bat,” is the winner I choose because I really like the lesson the poet put in there. The rhyme scheme is really good too. The poem is really action-packed too.

The second poem,Casey at Bat, is about a baseball game where a team is down by two points and they have runners on first and third base. Their best player, Casey, is up to bat, and everyone thinks he will win the game. But, he strikes out, and everyone is disappointed.
I choose Casey at Bat as the winner because I loved the rhyme scheme. I think it made it very fun to read. Also, I liked the moral:Just because you think you’re the best, don’t get cocky.

  22. The first poem Casey at the bat is about when there is a baseball game a the other team is winning. The first to batters came up and they each got a point. Then Casey went and the crowd was cheering for him. He got 1 strike then another and then finally he missed his third and got out.
The second poem I read was called The Eagle it is about an eagle who flew over a stood on a mountain. Unfortunately he fell right off.

I choose Casey at the bat because I like to watch baseball. Also, it is funny how he thought he could hit the ball on the last try but he didn’t. The crowd got so mad and left the game to a peaceful place while Casey was trying to practice. I really liked how the author incorporated a rhyme scheme on each line. For example, some of the rhyme schemes are bright and light, shout and out, hate and plate, and a lot of others. I really liked this poem.

  23. The first poem, The Eagle is about an eagle who falls.

The second poem, Casey at Bat, is about a baseball player named Casey who has a big ego. His team is losing by two points and they have two outs. Casey is up to bat when they have a batter at second and third. He is not looking as the first two balls go by and by the third hatred is in his eyes everyone is so excited but then he whiffs.

I choose, Casey at bat as the winner. I liked that it had an AB AB rhyme scheme. I also liked how it had a moral to it.

The second poem (CASEY AT BAT) is about a guy who has a huge ego and every girl likes him. But when he goes up to bat he strikes out and he is not HAPPY!

I choose CASEY AT BAT because it has much better rhymes has way more detail and is about a sport.

  27. First Poem, I do not like The eagle because it has a rhyme on every line. Another reason is that the rhymes don’t make sense.

Second Poem, I love Casey At Bat because all of the rhymes make sense. Another reason is the rhymas all mean something and it tells what they are thinking.

I chose Casey at bat because it shows affection. Another reason is itv makes a lot of sense and all of the rhymas make sense

  28. There is a eagle who is on top of a mountain, and there is the sea under it.Then like a thunderbolt (really fast) he falls, and then dives.
I think the author for Casey At Bat is trying to tell us that no matter how good you are you will still mess up sometimes. It’s about a baseball game and the other team is winning, and everybody got their hopes up when Casey stepped up at bat.
I think Casey At Bat should win because it’s telling something that is true in life that no matter how good you are you still mess up.

  29. The poem Casey at the Bat is about a guy named Casey who everyone loves. And he is very confident in himself. But he loses the game for his team/city.

The poem The Eagle is about a eagle watching the land below him and then suddenly he falls. I really liked the rhyme scheme AAA BBB .

In my opinion Casey at the Bat wins because is shows how you should stay confident but never be too confident. And it also had good rhyme scheme. And really good similes.

  30. Casey At Bat is about a baseball player is thinks he is better than a lot of people. In this poem, he got caught up in his fame and lost the game for the team. I think that Walt Disney did a great job with the video and it was very entertaining to me. The eagle was about a eagle looking over the valley and river below the mountain he was on. I think this story is very exciting. I think that Casey At Bat should win because of how entertaining it is. Go CASEY!!!

  31. The first poem Casey At The Bat is about a really good baseball player who strikes out and loses the game for his team.

The second The Eagle is about the eagle and how it is majestic and cool

I chose Casey At The Bat because it was really interesting and fun to read. I think it is used for
Entertainment and to interest readers to read the poem. The rhyme scheme is AA BB CC DD EE.

  32. The Eagle is about an eagle who is hanging from a branch and is staring at the azure world [ azure is blue in Spanish, but in the poem they say azure.] Then he KERSHLAT falls.

Casey at Bat is about an “amazing” baseball player. The setting is in a baseball park with one inning left, and Casey’s baseball team is down by 2. We had 2 players on bases, but OH Casey had to ruin it for the team being so full of himself. “ There ain't no joy in Mudville”.

I choose The Eagle because it has a great rhyme scheme, and I just enjoyed reading the poem. It was not to short but not to long like Casey at Bat. I choose The Eagle also because it had personification. Also it had a clear emotion, sadness. I choose The Eagle.

  33. The first poem, the eagle, is about an eagle that watches the sea from a mountain wall.

The second poem, Casey At Bat, is about a guy named casey who is really famous baseball player and if he hits a homerun they win the game, but he strikes out and gets humiliated.

I chose Casey At Bat as the winner because it is about baseball and I love baseball. Also I like because It has a lot of rhyme scheme in it Also I liked it because Casey failed and whiffed the ball.

  34. The first poem, The Eagle, is about how an eagle looks down on an ocean from a cliff. Then dives quickly to catch a fish. I liked the rhyme scheme when the author wrote,”The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls, He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls.” I think this poem was written to inform someone how an eagle acts.

The second poem, Casey at the Bat, is about a baseball player who is the fan favorite and has a huge ego. One game, his team was losing by two in the ninth period with two outs and men on second and third. When Casey got up to bat, everyone got wild. Casey didn’t like the first pitch a ignored the second. With two strikes, he swung, but he struck out. I think the morale of the story is don’t get too confident that you don’t try until you have to.

I chose Casey at the Bat because I like the morale that everyone should learn. I also liked the amount of detail and effort the author put in.

  35. The poem “ Casey at the Bat” is about a baseball player named Casey who is chosen to bat after Casey’s teammates get out. The first time the pitcher throws the ball, Casey ignores it because it isn’t his style and the umpire says strike one. The crowd shouts that the umpire should be killed but Casey raises his hand and smiles and signaled the pitcher to throw again. The second time he ignores it too and the umpire says strike two. Then the crowd yells fraud until Casey gives them a scornful look and the audience awes. On the third pitch Casey swings but misses and he is very very angry.

The poem “ The Eagle” is about an eagle who sits on tree in a lonely land and watches the sea from the mountain walls and at the end of the poem the eagle falls. The rhyme scheme is A A A A A A. I also like how detailed the author was with the poem for example, he said, The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls” he also said “ Ringed with the azure world, he stands,”

I choose “ The Eagle” as the winner because I love animals and the poem is so peaceful and observant for example, the author says, “ He clasps the crag with crooked hands,” also, I like the ending because the author says “ And like a thunderbolt he falls” but he doesn’t say what happens next.
