Poetry Madness: Game 2

Read Game 2 poems, Roger the Dog and The Falling Star. Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, Dust of Snow, is about a boy who is having a bad day until a crow lands on the tree above him, shakes the dust of snow on him, and gives his heart a change of mood.

The second poem, Mother to Son, is about a mother and a son. The mother had a rough life which she compared to a set of stairs that she had a rough time climbing. She told her son to not give up and keep moving forward when life gets hard.

I choose Mother to Son as the winner because it touched my heart and showed me that no matter if something is hard you should always move forward. Also, the author repeated lines to emphasize the message. It is a great story because it teaches you to persevere. That is why I chose Mother to Son.

  3. The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog and his owner talking about him. I like how it rhymes, but a line never repeats. This poem also has similes.
The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a shooting star in the sky “blinding” everyone. The poem says it was to lovely to be bought or to be sold. I like how it rhymes but it would be better if it had similes and metaphors.

  4. Roger the Dog is about a lazy dog that just eats and sleeps.

The Falling Star is about a star falling that is too beautiful to trade and happens too fast to remember.

I choose Roger The Dog as the winner because I like the way it uses descriptive words to describe the personality of the dog. The author also uses a simile to describe how the dog goes to sleep. “Then flops flat, and digs down deep, like a miner, into sleep.

  5. Roger the Dog is about a dog that always eats and sleeps and he never exercises. Even if you move him with your foot he will stay asleep.

The Falling Star is about a shooting star zooming across the sky and you have to make a wish. You have to make it quick.

I vote for Roger the Dog because I used to have a dog who did the exact same thing. He always lied around and he always ate and he didn’t really do anything else. I liked the imagery because I could imagine a dog in my mind just like that dog.
    Love,

  6. The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a old dog who doesn't do very much. All he does is sleep and eat and lay down by the fire. The writer used rhyme scheme in the poem, for example, he says, He wheezes at his ease. He only wakes to scratch his fleas. Thats one place where the writer uses a rhyme scheme.

The second poem, The Falling Star, I think is about how some thing are too beautiful to keep. This writer, also used rhyme scheme, for example. I saw a star slide down the sky, Blinding the north as it went by. That’s one example of a rhyme scheme.

I choose, Roger The Dog, as the winner because it reminds me of my dog Bailey, because he is not very active, and all he does is sleep and eat. The writer used rhyme scheme in the poem, for example, he says, He wheezes at his ease. He only wakes to scratch his fleas. Thats one place where the writer uses a rhyme scheme.

  7. The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog who will only eat and sleep. The only moving he ever does is eating his food and cleaning of his plate. The next poem, The Falling Star, is about a person who saw his first shooting star and is explaining nis thoughts on what he saw. He said, “ Like a star falling down the sky, Blinding the north as it went by.” I pick Roger The Dog as the winner because he explains what his dog was like. Some of the writer’s craft were similes, metaphors, rhyme schemes, personification, and imagery. The dog got explained in a lot of ways, and that is why I think Roger The Dog is the winner.
