Hearts of Service Day

Dear students,

I had a wonderful time volunteering with you at GraceWorks. I learned a lot about myself as well as the importance of giving back to the community. Volunteering takes more than showing up for a few hours. It takes preparation, planning, action, and, now, reflecting. I want you to reflect about your time spent at GraceWorks. Please answer the following questions:
  1. How is service an act of love?
  2. How did we serve others today?
  3. What was unique about the population of people we served?
  4. What were you thinking about as you were serving? Was it easy? Hard?
  5. How can we show empathy to people that may be different than us?
Please make sure you answer each question  before you publish your comment. Double check your comment for punctuation/spelling mistakes. Your comment must be at least 5 sentences.
Be sure to include to edit your post for:
    • complete sentences
    • correct spelling
    • capitalization (M.I.N.T.S.)
    • end punctuation
    • topic and closing sentence
I cannot wait to hear about your day.

    1. It felt good because when I was doing it I realized that we were doing it for people who need it. It was really fun. It made me feel sad because some people have to live on the street and do not have any clothes. We served others by helping them by giving them food.

    2. I think the morning was sort of sad because we passed a guy who had down syndrome and I thought that that guy was there to buy things.

    3. It was unique because there were a lot of people who starve and are homeless. We can show empathy by giving them food and warmth.

    5. Serving is an act of love because... you are helping others that are in need. We sorted food for the people who can't afford food for there family or for them selves. They were very nice and heart warming and I feel like I could do that anytime. I love doing stuff for others and especially for the homeless. we don't stare. they might be different on the outside but on the inside they are the same.

    6. It showed love by packing the food for other people.
      By packing food.
It was sad because there is a lot of kids/adults that don’t have enough food.
It was kind of easy because we just had to cross out the barcode and put the best time to eat it.
      I think by helping them.

    7. It was really fun that we got to help serve other people that are homeless or don’t have enough money to help people pay. What we did was we sorted food for the community. It was really interesting that people buy toilet paper the most. I thought it was very easy. We can show people that have disabilities and they will know that they are loved.

    8. I think that volunteering is showing love because we are helping and caring for others which is definitely love. We served others by sorting food so they can be given to people who need it. What was interesting about them is that the kids did got food from friday to monday morning. Serving was easier than I thought it would be. Buy serving them.

    9. Service is an act of love because you are helping living things. You can do service like bake sales to save the rainforest, or you can volunteer at different places to feed humans and animals.
We packaged food for the people who could not afford it at a regular price as our way to serve.
They all didn’t have enough money.
I think serving was easy because I knew it was for a good cause.
We can serve at different organizations that help them.

    10. I think that our service was an act of love because we helped food get the people that needed it most in our city.
Today I think we served others by labeling g=foods and sorting them so they can get to homeless and hungry people.
I think that the people we served were interesting because some of them just needed a snack or two and some of them needed loads of food.
I noticed that it was really easy to serve and that we should all do it more.
I think we can show empathy to people that are different than us by treating them the same as we would treat a friend.

    11. We served by organizing donated food into groups of sell by dates, furthermore sorting them into different categories. We served others by helping them to know which specific food they want, also the volunteers did little less work with our help. The population was different because there were people with special needs. I think it was easy to help because when we were sorting we were having fun. We can show empathy to different people by not judging them, and treating them like they have no differences.

2.We served others by putting the date on the food and putting the food in boxes for the poor.
3.It was uniqe because the poor or just people who want something get to come to Grace Works and buy stuff for low prices.
      4. I was thinking when I was serving that I would like to see the reactions on the peoples faces.
      5. We can show empathy to people whoare different by saying hello and helping them.

      We packed food.
It was very large and I felt very fortunate.
I was thinking about how brave these people must be to survive this long without food.
      We can surve them

    14. Service is an act of love because its helping others and caring about them.
Today we went to Grace Works and help pack and sort food for families that had a little less money than we could and could not afford enough food to feed their family.
I thought that it was unique because Grace Works will help any family in need and will give them free food.
I thought it was really fun to pack and sort food because it was fun to work together with my class.
We can show empathy by not wasting our food and helping the less fortunate

    17. Dear Mrs. Eads,
I think service is an act of love because when you help someone it makes life easier for them, which makes them feel loved. I believe we served others today by helping Grace Works get food to the people who are struggling. The unique thing about the population of the people we served was that there are so many struggling people, yet only few come the exact place we were. I was thinking about all the homeless people without food or a home. It was hard but fun. We can show empathy for people who are different than us by donating to different associations.

      Sincerely,
      Bo

    18. Service is an act of love because it is helping people who are not as fortunate as us and showing that we care and want to help. Also, service is an act of love because it helps give them the food, pet supplies, furniture, and the clothes that they need, for free. We served others today by organizing food in different categories and dates so it makes it easier to find what they need. The thing that is unique about Grace Works is that it provides furniture to pet supplies, to people who cannot afford it, but since it is free, they do not have to worry about having enough money to afford it. It is also unique because they let people with disabilities volunteer. It was also unique because it provides school supplies, easter and halloween decorations, and ovens too. It was easy to label and cross out the barcodes on the food, but it was hard to not get the dates and categories mixed up when we were organizing them. We can show empathy to people that may be different than us by being kind and cheerful when we are around them and maybe play with them and if they are less fortunate, we can make care packages for them and include a fun card.

    19. Giving things to people less grateful.
I gave helpful things to the people that don’t have as much and that is how I gave
      acts of love.
      3. One small thing can make a big difference.
      4. I was thinking about if I were them and it wasn’t that hard to serve them.
      5. Being nice to all of the homeless and give the people what they need because they don’t have much

    20. I learned at Feed The Children that I helped the community by packing boxes with toiletries. I showed love by helping people in poverty and caring for them. I helped by making boxes and packing then. I packed 400 boxes or more. And, I had a great time at Feed The Children.

    21. Service is an act of love like you are helping people and maybe animals too depending on what you are doing.I served those who do not have many resources. How? We packed boxes and made boxes to give to people. It was surprising that a lot of people are in puberty(Miss Derck’s word not mine).I thought that I was helping people and that it was good.It was chalangeing. You can give homeless people bags of stuff like a water bottle,a granola bar,a sandwich,a pair of clean socks, body spray, and sanitizer.

    22. Today I went to Feed the Children to help feed people that are less fortunate. I boxed shampoo with Cooper, I taped boxes together, and I broke down boxes. I showed love by doing those things. I served others by giving people that are less fortunate, toiletries and other things they need to survive. It was really fun to get to pack boxes with friends

    23. Service is an act of love because your helping and loving someone in poverty that has less money than other people in this world. I served them by giving shampoo, deodorant and other toiletries. What was cool about the population I served was, it was more than at least 100 people. That is a milestone of families in the world. While I was serving I felt empathy. It was Hard because when you were taping boxes you had to bend over. Or when you had to pack the toiletries you had to go fast to put the stuff in it .

    24. service is an act of love because I gave my time to serve others who are suffering of poverty. I packed boxes of toilet tries for the less fortunate. It is different because I go home and I smell my mommy making dinner, and when I go to take a shower, I know that I have good shampoo, conditioner, and body wash to use. But the people that are going to receive the boxes that I packed don't have food and soap to use.I was mostly thinking about getting the supplies into the bin.

    25. It is a service of love because when you are giving, you are taking your time out of your day to help someone in need.
I served others by putting in hair spray and breaking down every box that I saw and if it did have hair spray or was broken down, I didn’t.
It was unique that there was that many people out there with either disabilities or were just homeless.
I was thinking “how many boxes are left?” and, “will I have enough hair spray?” because it was hard going back and forth putting in hair spray in the boxes.
I can put myself in their shoes and feel what they feel so that will give me a reason why I should help people.

    26. I went to feed the children to help with packing boxes for people who are in poverty.Feed the children is a organization that delivers food and tortures to people in need. I helped by putting axe body spray in all the boxes. All of the volunteers put supplies in boxes or made boxes. All of the volunteers made a total of about 400 boxes for 400 families.
I loved others by helping packing boxes.I think it was very fun to help pack boxes for lessforchent people. The boxes will be donated to natural disasters around the us and other places. The places that feed the children go to are Africa,US and 8 more.I had so much fun at feed the children.

    27. I think servise an act of love because it shows that I care about others and want people to have a better day, week, year or life. Another reason it is important,it’s because we can stop others from suffering. Today I served others by packing toiletries. I really enjoyed it because I wanted to show others that they are loved. One thing that was unique about today was that I ended up having 400 boxes for 400 families. As I served I thought about others that were less fortunate as I am made me feel like I care and love others. I can show empathy by loving others and caring for them.

    28. Today my class went to feed the children. Feed the children is an organization which helps people in poverty by sending them boxes. The boxes may have toiletries , bottled water , or food. Today we packed boxes with food , made boxes , taped boxes , and broke down boxes. The boxes our class packed had things like soap , deodorant , razors , baby wipes , hand sanitizer , and lotion.

Today I served at feed the children. The way I served is I started out making boxes , then I helped organize the boxes. After that , I put items in the boxes. The boxes go to people in need to help them.

    29. Today I went to Feed The Children. There I sorted toiletries into care packages for the less fortunate. How I helped was by smashing boxes, sorting cookbooks, sorting deodorant, and sorting hairspray. At the start I was kind of clueless, but then they started to explain what we were going to do, and also the work was easy and hard all at the same time. In the end the 4th and 6th grade classes ended up packing four hundred boxes. Which all of them were sent to families all over Tennessee.

    30. Today, I went to ’Feed The Children’ to help families in poverty (poverty: people who don’t have money to live). At ‘Feed The Children’, I helped pack boxes, make boxes, tape boxes, carry boxes, build boxes, and tear boxes. I did all of this to help people in poverty. When I packed boxes, I packed shampoo for the people in poverty. When I made boxes, I made them for other people to pack. When I taped boxes, I taped the boxes to keep them sealed when the boxes go to people in poverty.

Today at ‘Feed The Children’, I showed love by packing boxes for families in poverty. I served the people in poverty. I also had a fun time working with others while doing this. I also thought this was easy and hard at the same time. I thought this was hard because I was moving around alot doing different things. I thought it was easy because some of the stuff I was doing was with friends and wasn’t hard.

    31. I learned that more than just people in Tennessee suffer from poverty. I really liked the field trip because you could feel really good that you just helped people in need. It was pretty easy all you had to do was put your assigned toiletrys in the box that was on the conveyor belt. The thing that I paced was axe body spray. It was fun because you could have fun at the same time.

I served others by pacing boxes full of things the less fortinet need. I felt like we got to know each other a lot better. I think that we really helped the less furtnet, and that the people who get the boxes will be really happy. I am proud of myself and everyone that helped because we pacted 400 boxes!

    32. In Hearts of Service Day, I helped make boxes and put shampoo in the boxes with Savannah. I need to do this because they´re are so many poor people out in the world that I need to help and provide food and clothes for. There are alot of Poverty people that I need to help. The toiletries that are needed to help poor people are shampoo, body wash, toilet paper, food, water, hand sanitizer, soap, etr. Clothes and shoes are also a good idea to give to the poor.

Service is an act of love because giving people toiletries, food, and clothes are important to give to the poor or else the world will lose maybe a whole generation of lives. We served others by giving them the stuff they need to survive. We served the poor and the homeless. It was hard because we had to keep everything organized. We can show others empathy by telling them they are loved by God.

    33. Today I went to Feed the Children to pack toiletries for people can’t afford toiletries. First, the man who worked at Feed the Children told us about poverty and how Feed the Children helps people in need. Feed the Children helps people in 10 countries including the U.S.A. My class and a 6th grade class packed different toiletries into boxes. The volunteers packed 400 boxes in total. Some of the boxes were saved in case there was a natural disaster and people needed food and toiletries.
Today, I served people in poverty by packing toiletries for people who need it. I feel like this helped because everyone needs toiletries. Have you ever gone a couple days without a soap? It doesn’t feel good. Imagine you don’t have any soap. That feels even worse. That’s how I feel I served people today.

    35. While I was at Feed The Children I helped with a couple things . The first thing I helped with was taping boxes so the other students could fill them with things that a person would need to have on a regular daily basis. After that I was asked to make sure that the boxes were organized and so that other people could put more things in them. The third thing I did was breaking down boxes. When people were done with there boxes they gave them to me and a couple other students and we stomped and ripped them to be recycled. Even though it was hard and there were a ton of boxes and they had to be flat.
I served the less fortunate when I taped the boxes for them to have things that the less fortunate need everyday. Service is an act of love because you help people in need. We served others by packing toiletries for people who are suffering from poverty. It was unique because in only 2 hours we packed 400 boxes for the less fortunate. When I was serving I thought this is hard I knew because my face was red and I felt sweat dripping down my back. We can show empathy by putting ourselves in different peoples shoes. Thank You for giving us the opportunity to go to feed the children
      Sincerely,
      Ava
