Elite 8: Game 2

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 2 and Game 4.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy. I really think that goes close to my heart. I feel bad for them.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South. For example, she says, "I'se been a-climbin' on" and "turnin' corners".

I pick Mother to Son as my winner.

  1. I think Roger the Dog has a more important meaning because sometimes you just need to lay back and relax.

My connection is with Roger the Dog because I am lazy and all I want to do is sit on the couch and watch TV.

I like Roger the Dog's writers craft because it is an AA rhyme scheme and it has couplets. For example,

He hogs the fire, he bakes his head,
As if it were a loaf of bread.

This is why I chose Roger the Dog.

  5. Game 2
The poem that is more important to me is Who has seen the wind because, it means that not everybody does the same things as you. Someone might like sports, and the other might like math more. I think this because the wind goes one different direction, and someone goes one direction. But the wind can also turn.

My connection is to Who has Seen the Wind. I connect to it because, I think that I’m only going to do this in my life. But when I see something else, I think that I’m going to do something else.

I liked the writer’s craft better on Roger the dog because, it had alliteration, and an AA rhyme scheme. I like poems better when they rhyme.

  6. Who Has Seen The Wind has a more important meaning to me because it is not about a fat revolting dog.

My connection with the poem,Who Has Seen The Wind is that sometimes I am walking around a store. No one can see me but they know I am there.

I like Who Has Seen The Wind's poem craft more because it is a quatrain for example the text says:
    Who has seen the wind?
    Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
    The wind is passing through.

I choose Who Has Seen The Wind as the winner

  7. Who Has Seen The Wind? Has a more important meaning to me because it really makes you think, for example it says who has seen the wind? Neither I nor you but when the leaves hang trembling the wind is passing through. It makes me think that we never really notice that wind is there or that it is real, and we never think of it as something living such as a tree.

My connection with the poem, Roger The Dog, is my dog Harold. He rarely is not sleeping and he would do anything for food. We once tried to take him out on a walk and when he got tired and laid down in the middle of the road until one of us carried him all the way home.

I liked Roger The Dog’s writer’s craft more because they used couplets such as, ease fleas, and dog log. They also used alliteration such as, digs down deep, and dinner dish. I thought they did great in alliteration, couplet, and rhyme scheme. Roger The Dog had a great rhyme scheme.

    I chose Roger THe Dog.

  10. Roger the Dog doesn't really have a meaning, but it was funny that a dog can be that lazy, because most dogs I’ve seen are jumping all over the place.

I don’t really have a connection because my neighbor has a dog that is SOOOOO jumpy. I haven’t really seen any lazy dogs like that.

Who has seen the wind is a poem someone but not me can relate to, God. I think this because you can’t see him but you know he’s always there for you. Also when it says the trees bow down their heads I think it means for God.
Who has seen the wind won for me because of it’s meaning. I like how it describes everything and I can really see the image. I can see the trees shaking and swaying.
