Elite 8: Game 3

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read the winners of Game 5 and Game 7.

Choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Be sure to give examples.
    • Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, quatrain, etc

Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of a  proficient comment:

I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem because I thought it had a deeper meaning. For example, I liked how it was about a special moment and you should not waste it.

I also liked this poem because I can make a connection. I really enjoy watching beautiful stars too.

Finally, I really liked this poem because it had poet's craft. For example, it had a rhyme scheme AABBCC. Also, the author used couplets in the poem. For example, "I saw a star slide down the sky. Blinding the north as it went by."

This is why I chose The Falling Star as my favorite poem.

My connection is to the poem Choosing shoes. I was at the shoe store and I could not decide what shoes to get.

I liked the writer in Choosing shoes better because I liked the rhyme scheme. It was aaab. It had metaphors, It also had alliteration. For example some so, and flat fat.

  2. I think choosing shoes has a better connection because whenever I get on my computer and look for shoes it is very hard to find the perfect ones.

I think Life Doesn't Frighten Me has a more important meaning because it's saying that you shouldn't be afraid of everything.

I think life doesn't frighten me has better poet's craft because it has better rhyming. For example it says, "Bad dogs barking loud. Big ghosts in a cloud."

I choose Life Doesn't Frighten Me as the winner.

  3. Life doesn't Frighten me has the most meaning to me. It has the most meaning to me because it is saying that life.... doesn't frighten me.

I can make a personal connection from Choosing Shoes. I can make a connection because once I saw a lot of shoes and did not know which one to pick.

I enjoyed the poet's craft of Choosing Shoes the best. I chose Choosing Shoes because it has a lot of repetition. For example, it said shoes 10 times at the end of the line.

    I choose Choosing Shoes.

  4. Game 3
Choosing shoes to me has more meaning. It means everyone is different. Like, I might like grey shoes, but you might like pink. We both have different opinions. Second, you might have wide feet, so you need fatter shoes, but I have skinny but long feet, I need longer shoes. We both have different sizes.

I connect with Life doesn’t frighten me. Life doesn’t frighten me because I am in God’s hands. He knows my whole life and has planned it, I just live it. Remember how Jesus walked on water? God planned that to happen. That is why life doesn’t frighten me.

I liked the Writer’s craft in Choosing shoes. It was amazing how the poet came up with all of the styles of the shoes, and all the colors. I also liked it because it had rhythm. You could turn that poem into a song easily.

    And the winner is……………………………….
    CHOOSING SHOES !!!

    If they let us buy?

  6. I think Life Doesn't Frighten Me has a more important meaning because you can't let everything get to you.

I have a connection with Choosing Shoes because at the beginning of the year there are so many shoes to choose from for school.

I like Choosing Shoe's rhyme scheme better because it is an AAAB rhyme scheme. Also, there is alliteration. For example,
    Bright shoes, white shoes
    Dandy-dance by night shoes.
Also, I imagined a person walking around a shoe store trying to find the perfect shoes.

    I choose Choosing Shoes.

  7. I chose, Choosing Shoes has a more important meaning to me. For example, the meaning is it sometimes can be hard to choose shoes that you like and can only get one pair of shoes.

I have a good connection with Choosing Shoes. For example, it sometimes can be very hard for me to choose which pair of shoes I should get.

For the poem, Choosing Shoes, I really liked the rhyme scheme of this poem. For example, it was AAAB. Also I liked how it described the different types of shoes the shoe store had. For example, it said ”Buckle shoes, bow shoes, Pretty pointy-toe shoes”.

I choose, Choosing Shoes as my winner.

  8. I think Choosing Shoes has the best meaning out of the two poems. For example, every day new shoes are bought and worn. I also like that it covers a lot of things involving how hard it is to find the right pair. I like the main idea.

I can make a connection with Life Doesn’t Frighten Me. It names a ton of things people are scared of. But I like a lot of the “scary things” they say are scary. I like to be adventures so on the second page of this poem it has a line on going to the bottom of the ocean. I think that would be so cool if it was possible.

Finally, I liked the writer's craft in Life Doesn’t Frighten Me. It rhymes a lot. I love rhyming but not tons of rhyming. The rhyme scheme was AAABBA. This poem didn’t really have any alliteration or other writer’s craft.

I choose Choosing Shoes as the winner!

  12. I chose life doesn’t frighten me as my favorite poem because it had a deeper meaning. For example, instead of talking about different kinds of shoes, It is talking about the things that don't frighten them and it really tells me that we are all afraid, and that it is ok to be afraid because everyone has been there and everyone is afraid of these things.

I also liked Life Doesn’t Frighten Me, because I can make a connection with it , I too am afraid of things and sometimes I worry that other people will laugh about what I am afraid of, but all of us have been there before.

Finally, I really liked Life Doesn’t Frighten Me because it has almost a hidden meaning. People that aren’t looking into the poem would probably say that the poem is about a man saying that life doesn’t frighten him, I looked into it deeper and I saw that it was sort of sending a message that these things everyone is afraid of, and it’s ok. We all have fear and we are all scared. It also has great writer’s craft, because they used a lot of couplet such as wall hall and loud cloud. It also has good rhyme scheme, for example the first four lines go aaab.

The other poem, life doesn’t frighten me, is a little boring. It is a mixture of seriousness and sternness.

I liked Life Doesn’t Frighten Me because of the writer’s craft. The rhyme scheme was AABBCC. That also means that they are couplets. Also a metaphor. For example, “I’ve got a magic charm up my sleeve.” It doesn’t literally mean that the magic charm is up his sleeve

The poem I can make a connection with is buying shoes I can make a connection with this poem is because it is sort of the same way when I go buying my new school shoes.

Life doesn’t Frighten me is a poem that I can’t make a connection to because the truth is that i’m scared that every time I turn a corner i’m going to be attacked, or maybe that my house will catch on fire. Stuff like that.
My winner is obviously Life doesn’t frighten me because it had meaning, it had emotion, it had everything a poem could want. I feel like it had amazing imagery, and that it could win an award.
