Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. McGee read "Mother to Son" and "Casey at the Bat." Eads read "Dust of Snow" and "Casey at the Bat".
In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more?
- Poet's craft can include: repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, alliteration, couplets, onomatopoeia, simile/metaphor, etc.
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit. I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I can relate to this poem when I play soccer because I play goalie and I have all of the pressure of not letting a ball go by me but at least i'm not a cocky as Casey. This poem means a lot about the saying "you win some you lose some."
My winner is Dust Of Snow because it has a more powerful meaning than Casey at The Bat and because I could relate to it even though I don't play baseball. I think that dust of snow meant that the slightest thing good or bad for better or for worse.

The first 2 pitches were terrible, but the umpire called strikes. The next pitch was perfect but he missed. I was glad I couldn’t go to the game.

Roger the dog is a funny rhyming poem about an old dog that sleeps and eats. One example of a funny part is asleep he wheezes at his ease. He only wakes up to scratch his fleas. He will not race he will not romp, he saves his strength for gobble and chomp. I also like this poem because it was not to serious.
