Poetry Madness: Let the Games Begin!

During March, the best college basketball teams compete for the National Title. In order to be the best, each team must state their case by playing the best, scoring the most, and ultimately advancing to the next round.

To create a sense of poetry madness in our room and celebrate poetry, we will read a 2 poems each evening and advance a class winner the following day. However, like the basketball tournament, we must use specific criteria to judge a poem: meaning, poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition), ability to visualize, and your personal connection.

Each night you will answer the following 3 questions about the poems you have read.

1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)
2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)
3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY? ***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

You will complete Game 1 in class.  Please read Game 1 (Dust of Snow and Mother to Son), choose your favorite, and leave your comment below.  I left an example of a comment below.

The first poem, I Too, is about race and how the poet is accepted over time and is a part of America.

The second poem, Sun Song, is about a song for African-Americans to sing about the song to bring them hope.

I chose I, Too as the winner because I like the deeper meaning of change and how the poet uses each stanza to tell the story. I also like how Hughes changes one word in the first and last line to show acceptance.

  4. I think "Dust of Snow" is about how a crow flew down onto a tree with a lot of snow, and then all the snow fell on the man. When the snow fell, it changed his mood from grumpy to happy.

I think "Mother to Sun" is about a mother's letter to her son, saying that her life has not been easy, but she's still getting through it.

I chose "Dust of Snow" as the winner because I liked how the poet made it funny. For example, a bird flew on a tree of snow, and the snow fell on top of him! Tat is why I chose "Dust of Snow".

Mother to Son is about a mother telling her son that life is hard but you can't turn back.

The second poem, Mother to son, is about a black mom who is having trouble in her life and says to never turn back no matter what. Her life is not like glass stairs.

Dust in the Snow is about a man who has a bad day but he goes into the snow and snow falls on him and then he is in a good mood.

  16. I think dust of snow is about a man standing under a tree then a crow came and shock the snow from the tree onto the man's head. The man was grumpy and was having a bad day before the snow fell on his head. The snow changed how the man's day was going.

The second story we read was about an african american slave trying to tell her son my life isn't a crystal stair way i'm going through a hard time as a slave but you need to keep your confidence!

  17. Dust of snow was short the meaning was that the smallest things can make a change. The rime scheme was A,B,A,B Mother to son was long the meaning you have to a high expectation for yourself. It did not have a rime scheme I pick mother to son, because it had a lot of meaning.I think it was in slave time.I loved it.

  18. I think the main idea of dust of snow is even though you are having a bad day, the smallest things can make you smile.

The second story, Mother to son is about a mom telling her son that even though they are poor, they have to keep trudging forward.

I picked Dust of Snow because I understood it better. Also, it sent a powerful message to all the readers reading it. Lastly, I picked it because it made me feel happy inside. I just wanted to smile after reading it!

  19. I think Dust Of Snow is about a man that is in a bad mood until a crow landed on a tree and caused snow to fall on his head.

The second story,Mother to Son is about a mother that had a rough childhood and wanted her son to go down a smooth crystal path not the rough spiky path.

I choose the poem Mother to Son because I thought it had a good message. For example, when the mom said she went down the rough path in her childhood, she cared enough to take the time to tell her son how to not go down that path and life a happy life.It relates to my life in the way my mom tells me to go down the path that's smooth not rough.

  20. I feel like the main idea of Dust of Snow was that something small, like snow can change your day from bad to good.I noticed it had good rhyming. For example it was an ABAB pattern.
I feel like the main idea for Mother to Son is even if you had a hard life it doesn't have to stay like that. I noticed this poem didn't rhyme.
I chose Dust of Snow as the winner because, I understood it better than the other poem and I felt like I could relate to it, lastly I could picture what was going on and that made me like it.

  21. Dust Of Snow is about a person having a really bad day. But when a dust of snow falls on their head their mood changes to being happy! The writer's craft is rhyming. This poem was very short but good!

Mother To Son is about a mom telling her son that you always need to keep trying even though life isn’t fair! The writer's craft is phrases the mom uses a lot of phrases for instance my life was not crystal stairs! This poem was long and very good!

I chose Mother To Son, because it meant something to me because i have had experiences where life is not fair but i need to keep trying! I loved how the author made it relate to the reader! This poem was really great and I hope other people like it to!

  24. Dust Of Snow is about a man who is having a bad day but a little snow from a tree that a bird knocked totally changed his day. To me, this shows how something small can change your day.

The second poem we read was called Mother to Son. Itb is about a kid's mom telling him that life is not a crystal staircase. It is full of splinters, no carpet, and other stuff that may stop you. I think that this poem has much more meaning than Dust Of Snow.

Overall, I wanted Dust of snow to win. I liked them the same but it came down to the slang in Mother to Son. It reminds me of the west and I don't really like the west. It is a weird reason but it was the only reason. I also like the rhyming they included in Dust of Snow. The rhyme scheme was ABAB. For example, heart and part, crow and snow, and mood and rued.

  25. I think Dust of snow is about, when a crow shakes on a snowy tree when a person is under it. Then the person changes his mood because of the snow on the tree. I noticed there was a good rhyme scheme. For example, the pattern was A,B,A,B,A,B,A,B rhyme scheme.

The main idea for mother to son is, when a mother is telling her so what to do. So she is trying to teach him that things ain't always hard so don't give up. I noticed they said ain't a lot. For example, it said it three times.

I chose Dust of Snow because I thought it was not as hard to understand. Also because it was a very fun poem. Another example is, I liked the rhyme scheme.

  26. I think the main idea for Dust Of Snow is when someone has a change of heart. It had a lot of rhyme scheme. For example, rued and mood rhyme and me and tree rhyme and crow in snow rhyme.

I think the main idea for Mother To son is life is not easy. It had a lot of Old Fashion Slang. For example, they used climbin', 'cause, and ain't.

Mother To Son won and I choose Mother To Son. I choose Mother To Son because it uses a lot of Old Fashion Slang. Also, I could barley under stand it and it gave my a challenge.

  27. Dust of Snow
this is about a man's day gone bad and a clamp of snow lands on his head and makes him happy. From the poem it is a smooth and has good rhythm for example the pattern is AB AB.

    Mother to son
In this poem it tells about how to never give up and life is hard and not a breeze. For example it said "don't sit on the steps and go and keep going"

    WINNER
    MOTHER TO SON !!

The reason is when I was in kindergarten my uncle died. it was hard and i could not think. even though it was hard I never gave up. I finished kindergarten and continued to climb.

  28. I enjoyed the writers craft of Dust of Snow because It showed that not all bad days are completely bad, also a poem can sound good without ryhm, for example they used cylables and it still sounded good.
I also enjoyed Mother to Son because it really made an image in my mind, that life is not always a crystal staircase but even if its not you have to keep on climbing and you will always make it.
I have decided Mother to Son because it really meant something more to meit really set an image in my mind, and made me want to read more.I also enjoyed how they used dialogue and had someone talking.

  30. I thought mother to son was about a mother who grew in a not so nice house. I also thought it was about a boy who was listening to his mom talk to him about this.

In the dust of snow it is about a man who has had a bad day and a bird fell on a tree and snow fell down on the mans head . then he felt better.

I picked mother to son because it made me think about what was important in life. It also made me think about never quitting.

  32. Roger the Dog,is about a fat ugly dog that is lazy. It has no moral and is very descriptive.

Falling Star is about a man/boy that saw a shooting star fly across the sky.It has a good moral:be careful what you wish for.

I chose Falling star as the winner because it had a good moral. For example when the text says good only to make wishes on and when it said I saw a star slide down the sky it made me picture my mom telling me to look because there was a shooting star. When I saw it my mom said to be careful what you wish for I made a wish and remembered it today.

  33. Roger the dog was very silly poem. It was about a really lazy dog who only got up to eat. THe owner wishes the dog would exercise, but Roger saves his energy for eating.

The second poem I read was called the fall'n star. This poem was about a person who is watching a star flowing across the sky. The girl is making up a poem about the start and how it can't be bought or sold.

I think the winner is the fall'n star, I choose this because I am such a big dog lover and I don't like to talk about dogs that way!!!, I think Fall'n star is a really cute poem about that one single star!

  35. The first poem,Casey At The Bat,is about a man named Casey that is put on plate to win the game for Mudville.

The second poem,The Eagle,is about an eagle looking for prey.It then sees prey and dives off a mountain to catch.

I choose Casey At The Bat as the winner because it has more words per paragraph that make sense. For example:The Eagle says:Ringed with the azure world,he stands. And Casey At The Bat says:For Casey, mighty Casey was up to bat.
