Poetry Madness: Game 3

Read Game 3 poems, The Eagle and Casey at Bat . Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, so  this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless, memorable, and to be forever gone out of his life.

I think that the winner is the poem, The Falling Star. The reason I chose this poem is because it has great imagery, like when the woman stated,"Blinding the north as it went by". Another reason I chose this poem is the author uses the rhyme scheme: AA BB CC. This makes the poem fun to read and gives it a rhythm.

  1. The first poem, Casey at Bat, is about a baseball team that is motivated that Casey will win the game for them. Two of the players that are not so great got on base and Casey struck out!!!
The second poem, The Eagle, is about an Eagle that is by the sun flying around lonely lands and he falls of a mountain top.
I pick Casey at Bat because it tells a story. When poems tell stories I really like them. It also has a great rhyme scheme.

  2. The first poem, "Casey at the Bat", is about how a team is losing, but then the worst players go to 2nd and 3rd base. Later, the best player on the losing team steps up to the plate, and strikes out, and "there is no joy in Mudville".

The second poem, "The Eagle", is about a man's perspective of an eagle. The rhyme scheme is AAA BBB.

I chose "Casey at the Bat", because even though the poem was long, the rhyme scheme, (ABAB) went all the way to the letter Z! I also liked it because it was such a twist ending!

  5. The first poem Casey At Bat is about a man named Casey and he plays baseball. Every body wants Casey to play. He gets 3 striks and he is out. He was so mad. The Eagle is about someone desgriping him. He lands in lonely lands, and like a thunder bolt he falls. I choose Casey at Bat as the winner because it was longer, and I thought it made more sense. I liked when he got out because it was funny.

  6. The poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle that lives on a mountain near a beech. But, like a thunderbolt he falls, Which I think means he dies.

Casey at the Bat is a poem about an amazing baseball player and Everybody thinks he will win the game for his team but he strikes out.

I chose, Casey at the Bat, the winner because the rhyme scheme goes all through out the two page poem. Also, because the story talks about anything can happen. Finally, because the alliteration is great.

  30. I think that the first poem, If, is that you can do anything if you believe in yourself, and not let anyone put you down.

The second poem, Who Has Seen the Wind, was about how nobody has actually seen the wind, but you can see how the wind is moving, by stuff that are moving.
