Poetry Madness: Game 3

Read Game 3 poems, The Eagle and Casey at Bat . Answer each question below. Remember to explain WHY you chose the winner based on poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition) AND your personal connection to the meaning. Don't forget to write with M.I.N.T.S.!

Your post needs to include the following:
1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)

3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY?

***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

Here is an example of proficient writing:

The first poem, Roger The Dog, is about a dog who is very lazy and won't get up. He uses all of his strength to eat food, so  this dog is not the healthy type.

The second poem, The Falling Star, is about a boy who spots a shooting star falling through the sky and explains that it is priceless, memorable, and to be forever gone out of his life.

I think that the winner is the poem, The Falling Star. The reason I chose this poem is because it has great imagery, like when the woman stated,"Blinding the north as it went by". Another reason I chose this poem is the author uses the rhyme scheme: AA BB CC. This makes the poem fun to read and gives it a rhythm.

  1. The first poem is about a man who is a poser and a basketball player. He is about to strike the ball but no one is going for him.
The second poem is about an eagle about to take flight above the ocean.
I think the winner is Casey At Bat because I really liked that it was long so I could understand it a little better. I really thought was kind of cool that he could get away with being a poser because he can't really play baseball at all. I also really like to watch baseball. I think that Casey At Bat should win.

    5. I think Casey at Bat is about a baseball game. Both of the teams have not scored yet. There is people on 2nd and 3rd. It is Casey's turn to bat. The ump said strike 1, the strike 2, then strike 3 your out.
I think The Eagle is about an eagle that is flying above the ocean looking for fish. Then the eagle saw a fish and went to get it.
I choose Casey at bat for the winner. Because I thought it had a lot of detail and it was a great story. I also made a prediction while I was reading I thought that Casey would hit it.

  2. The first poem Casey at bat I think is about a baseball game and there are two people on base and the other team is winning by 2. Then casey goes up to bat and gets struck out and gets very disapointed.

The second poem The Eagle I think is about what a eagle does in its life. Also I think someone is watching the eagle and telling about it.

I think casey at bat is the better poem because I like how it is a long story. Also it is very funny once yo see the movie. That is why I like casey at bat more.

  3. I like Casey At Bat because the story has an unexpected ending and it is very meaningful. It teaches people a lesson EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

I enjoy The Eagle. It describes how the eagle and it's smooth flying motion. It tells you the motion of him attacking it's prey. I think it is exquisite.

I favor Casey At Bat. I like how the unexpected ending plays a huge role in the poem. It expresses a lot of emotions. It is a very good poem. You learn a huge lesson from the book about life and that is EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

  4. I think the poem the Eagle is about a very wise eagle that is always looking over people and is like the king of wilderness.it also kindof means he is soposed to scare everyone.

I also think the poem Casey at the bat is about a man named Casey who all the women , men and children think is amazing at baseball but he wants to show off so he tries to get the perfect hit and he strikes out ! I guess he is not so great after all.

I choose Casey at the bat because everyone assumes he will win the game for them but he strikes out instead. I also think it has a lot of humor and it also happens in life a lot so it makes sense.

  7. 1) In the poem Casey at Bat it is about a guy named Casey who the audience thinks is really cool but is surprised when he strikes out.
    2) The Eagle is about a eagle who is very neat and flies really fast.

Opinion) I chose The eagle for this round because I think it has more meaning than Casey at bat. I also chose it because I like the rhyme scheme pattern (AAABBB). And my last reason for choosing it is because it is easier to understand than Casey at bat because it dosent has hard words like, vengeance. This is why I like The Eagle over Casey at bat.

  8. The first poem, Casey at Bat, is about a poser who makes everyone think he is great at baseball but when it is time for him to bat, he is too busy showing off instead of actually hitting the ball.

The second poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle who first takes flight into the air above the ocean.

I chose The Eagle because of the detailed story and the alliterations. For example, Close to sun in "lonely lands." I also like the simile, like a thunderbolt he falls. I think I can relate because there is a first time for everything in life.

  9. The first poem I read was Casey at the Bat. It's about a baseball player who is really confident that he will make a home run. He lets the first ball go he lets the second one go, but he isn't going to let the third one go. He swings and misses. everyone is disappointed.

The second poem I read is a short story about a eagle. This eagle was flying around. He stops for a rest. He look around at the world. He looks at the sea beneath him. He looks at the lonely lands. Then he takes off again.

My favorite was Casey at the bat. I liked this one because, it was a nice story. Also because, the rhyme scheme was really good. I liked how they made such a good story rhyme so well.

  10. I think the poem the Casey at bat was about a guy that everybody thought was so good. but in the 9th inning he let the first pitches go and on the last pitch he missed and lost the game for his team.

The eagle is about an eagle is about how an eagle targets his prey.

I like like Casey at bat because I love baseball and I like how everyone likes him and then he fails. the rhyme scheme is abab that is why I like Casey at bat.

The second poem, The Eagle, is about a boy who grabs onto a crag and is enjoying the view when all of a sudden he finds himself in the ocean.

I choose, Casey atb the Bat, as my favorite. I liked it because it had an interesting story line, good rhythm, and a funny rhyme scheme. I also like how it is like a picture book but still has the elements of a poem. It was a really funny poem.

The second poem, Casey at the bat, is about a baseball game where a really good player named Casey was up to bat but strikes out.

The second poem THE EAGLE is about an eagle that is watching for fish in the sea.

My favorite poem is the second, THE EAGLE because bald eagles are my favorite animal and I have never seen this rhyme scheme(AAA BBB).

  14. CASEY AT BAT is about Casey who everyone thinks is very good at baseball. Though when he is at bat, he strikes out very quickly, and loses them them the game.

THE EAGLE is about an eagle flying then rests on a crag and then goes hunting.

I choose THE EAGLE as the winner. I choose it because it's not hard to understand, even though Casey at Bat isn't either, it's also short. I also like eagles. I noticed that the rhyme pattern is AAA BBB.

The Eagle is about an eagle diving out from the sky to catch prey!

Caesy at Bat is about a strong muscular batter who has a big crowd cheering for him and he doesn't expect to loose but in the end he ends up loosing.

My favorite is Caesy at Bat because it is a very interesting topic to write about. I also like the moral of the story which is to not be so confident in yourself because when you actually run into a real problem it is especially harder for yourself.

  17. The first poem was, The Eagle, and it is about and eagle diving down to find his prey. I enjoyed it.

The second poem was, Casey at the bat, and it was about a man named Casey and all the girls came to see him play baseball and he was the best. So he had TWO strikes and if he got one more he would be out, so he missed the ball and he cried for ever. I loved the way they did the AA BB CC and so on worked.Another reason I loved Casey at the bat was the meaning. The meaning was how he thought he was the best and the was so good he could wait for the last ball, but when he thought he was so good that he missed.

I choose Casey at the bat because it had more meaning and had a great lesson it, and I also liked that it was longer so it could tell more to the story and a lot more reason that it was so good. That is why I choose Casey at he bat.

  22. The first poem, The Eagle, is about an eagle seeing things from up above. The line "And like a thunderbolt he falls" means he soars down to the ground very fast.

Casey at the Bat is about a guy named Casey who is very good at baseball and who never missed the ball. When the umpire calls strike three Casey is sad that he struck out.

I choose Casey at the Bat for the winner because it is funny and I liked how it rhymed a lot. I also liked when the crowd yelled kill the umpire.

  23. The first poem Casey at Bat is about a baseball player, and every one thinks he is great. Unfortunately he strikes out on his third try.

The second poem The Eagle is about an eagle who flies down for his prey and soars back up again.

I chose Casey at Bat as the winner because it teaches you that you shouldn't believe that someone is great at something until you see them do it. I also like it because it tells a funny story.

  24. The first poem, Casey at Bat, is about a baseball game with a huge crowd that all came to see Casey, a very good baseball player. Casey's team was losing but there was a man on third and second base and Casey was batting. He struck out twice carelessly but on the third time he swung very hard but struck out. It was a sad day for Mudville. The second poem is The Eagle, it is about an eagle and what it does. The rhyme scheme is interesting because it is aaa, bbb. I think the winner is The Eagle because Casey at bat goes all the way to z in lettering, I think it goes on to long. Another reason I chose The Eagle is because instead of two rhyme scheme it is aaa, bbb, three rhyme schemes in a row. The only thing I don't like about the poem is there is no similes or metaphors. Overall I liked both poems.

  25. The first poem, The Eagle, was about a eagle searching for food from a mountain. At the end, the eagle finds dinner.

The second poem, Casey at Bat, is about a champion baseball player caught up in how people cheer for him. Soon, he struck out, And there is no joy in Mudville.

My preference is Casey at Bat. I noticed the rhyme scheme being A,A,B,B,C,C,D,D,E,E etcetera. This poem was more understandable than some others, and has humor also. the lesson is to not boast. I think Casey at Bat should win.
