March Madness! Let the games begin!

During March, the best college basketball teams compete for the National Title. In order to be the best, each team must state their case by playing the best, scoring the most, and ultimately advancing to the next round.

To create a sense of poetry madness in our room and celebrate poetry, we will read a 2 poems each evening and advance a class winner the following day. However, like the basketball tournament, we must use specific criteria to judge a poem: meaning, poet's craft (rhyme, line breaks, punctuation, simile/metaphor, word choice, repetition), ability to visualize, and your personal connection.

Each night you will answer the following 3 questions about the poems you have read.

1. What is the meaning of the first poem? (Summarize in one sentence)
2. What is the meaning of the second poem? (Summarize in one sentence)
3. Based on the criteria, which poem did you choose and WHY? ***Please tell me everything you think, but use your best writing.

You will complete Game 1 in class.  Please read Game 1 (Dust of Snow and Mother to Son), choose your favorite, and leave your comment below.  I left an example of a comment below.

The first poem, I Too, is about race and how the poet is accepted over time and is a part of America.

The second poem, Sun Song, is about a song for African-Americans to sing about the song to bring them hope.

I chose I, Too as the winner because I like the deeper meaning of change and how the poet uses each stanza to tell the story. I also like how Hughes changes one word in the first and last line to show acceptance.

  25. I thought long and hard over this I thought that both had a great story to tell and are equal in quality the first one Dust of Snow tells a story of winter and the meaning I think is that summers fun and all and at first you rued the day that it changes to winter but then you realize that you can have just as much fun in the winter as you can in the summer. On the other there's the second poem Mother to Son which has one of the best meanings poetry can have it's saying that life won't always be a crystal stair which means that life won't be a rich, easy, and simple it's saying there will always be another bump in the road that you can't always get what you want that when you fall down you need to get up and that you have to learn to be tough and keep trying. So it's a tie for me.

  31. The first poem Roger the Dog, is a funny poem about a dog that is very lazy, and the only reason he will get up is if you are feeding him.

The second poem The Falling Star, is a meaningful poem about a person who sees a beautiful falling/shooting star, and makes a wish on it.

Even though Roger the Dog was a funny poem, I chose The Falling Star. I chose The Falling Star because it has a lot of meaning to it, and I will never forget the time I saw one of the most beautiful things, a shooting star.

I think The Falling Star was about a shooting star that is bright and beautiful, and I think the poet means when it says " Too lovely to be bought or sold " that the star is to pretty to be touched.

I choose Roger the Dog as the winner because it has lots of detail and there were lots of similes and metaphors. Plus I love dogs.
