Poetry Madness: Elite 8, Game 4

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read "Do You Carrot for Me at All?" and "How to Eat a Poem."

In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make with either poem?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Poet's craft can include repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, simile/metaphor, etc.
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South.

  1. I think that Do You Carrot for Me at All had a more important meaning than How to Eat a Poem.I think this because Do You Carrot for Me at All was sort of a love story kind of thing and I thought it was clever to add food that sound like words to the poem.
I can connect to How to Eat a Poem.I can connect to this because, when I eat a cheeseburger the same thing happens.I just pick it up and take a bite.
And for the winner of this game. Drumroll please pat pat pat pat.........Do You Carrot for Me at All.I chose this as my winner because it was very clever to add food to the poem.

  3. I think How to Eat a Poem is about how to eat a poem. It doesn't really make sense because it describes it as juicy and stuff.
I didn't really connect to either poem. They also had personification.
I think Do You Carrot at All for Me? is about a guy using food puns to describe his love for someone. It has more meaning and is pretty funny too.
My winner is Do You Carrot at All for Me? because it has more meaning than How to Eat a Poem. It also has personification in a twisted way I think.

  4. I think that Do You Carrot All For Me? Has a more important meaning then How To Eat A Poem does. I thought it was about a person who is trying to ask someone to marry them, and comes up with a very cute and fun idea of how to ask that person to marry them.
I can connect to How To Eat A Poem because sometimes I'm so hungry that I just dig in and in the poem the person is saying " don't be polite. Bite in. Pick it up with your fingers..."
My favorite poem was Do You Carrot All For Me? Becuse I loved how the author used veggies and fruits to describe what the person felt for the other person. I also really likec it on line 2 when the author wrote "My heart beats for you" I thought that was pretty funny.

  5. I think Do Carrot All For Me has more meaning then How To Eat A Poem. I think this because it is about someone wanting to marry another person. The author described how much he/she loved them by using food.
I can connect to How To Eat A Poem because sometimes I feel so hungry that I could eat anything. Sometimes I also like foods that you can just eat without doing anything to it.
My favorite poem is probably Do You Carrot All For Me because I thought it is cool that the author described how he/she felt using food, for example the author says lettuce marry.

  6. I think Do You Carrot All For Me because the poet is writing a poem about someone who is going to ask someone to marry him. But instead of using real sentences, he mixed up his words in a fun way by using veggies to talk. I thought is a creative way to write and I like to see things like that in a writer.
I can connect to How To Eat A Poem because sometimes, you can dig in and "eat" a good poem. It is simple because there is "No core, nor stem, nor peeling, etc. to throw away!" And also, sometimes I don't feel like being polite, like the poem said. "Don't be polite. Bite in. Pick it up with your fingers and eat!" You just have to push aside those manners and eat the poem!
My favorite was Do You Carrot All For Me because I LOVE to see creative ideas and words in poems. They make poems so much more fun to read. I also liked how some of the veggies he used sounded like real words. Like, do you carrot(care at) all for me, sounds like real words! That is why I chose this poem.

  7. I think that Do you carrot all for me has more meaning than How to Eat a Poem because the poet is describing a sweet proposal given by a man to a woman. How to Eat a Poem has some meaning because it is trying to teach about not worrying about your manners, but mostly it is just a funny and silly poem.

I can connect to How to Eat a Poem because I have had people tell me to pick food up with my fingers and dig in. Hopefully, I would not forget to use my manners most of the time. For example, I would not act like a caveman licking the juice that may run down my chin or not using a fork when I am supposed to use one.

I think that the winner poem is Do you carrot all for me because it is less silly than the other poem. I also like this poem because the author states the proposal using fruits and veggies as some of the words. For example, when the poet says, "Weed make a swell pear," the author is using the homophone for "pear" when it really would be "pair." The homophones are clever and this is why I chose Do you carrot all for me.

  8. I think that Do You Carrot All for me has more meaning than How to Eat a Poem because it is about a real life experience. I like how it used different words to explain the meaning. The author wrote about different vegetables for other phrases. For example he used Lettuce Marry.
I can make a connection with How to Eat a Poem because it teaches you about manners. When I was little I did not have good manners, so that is why I made a connection with How to Eat a Poem.
I think the winner is Do you Carrot All For me because of how the author uses the words. I also liked the meaning of the poem and that is why I picked this one. I love the creative idea with words.

  9. How to Eat a Poem has a more important meaning to me because it is saying that it's okay to be sloppy sometimes and just go for it. I love how the poet used examples about how to do that like "you do not need a knife or a fork or a spoon or a plate or a napkin or a tablecloth."
My personal connection is with How to Eat a Poem because I am sloppy sometimes when I eat. I eat juicy, summer peaches with my hands and lick my fingers.
I enjoyed the poet's craft more in Do you Carrot All for Me because the poet uses fruits and vegetables instead of similar sounding words. That makes it more fun to read because the the poet uses fruits and vegetables in such a clever way.

  10. I think Do You Carrot All For Me has more meaning than How To Eat A Poem because the author is telling us about a proposal by a man and a woman. I think How To Eat A Poem is about a person that is trying to teach us about not worrying about your manners, But I think that it is mostly about a fun and silly poem.
I can connect with How To Eat A Poem because I have used my hands and diged in to my food when I was not supposed to. For example, I would lick the ice cream off my chin or not using my fork when I was supposed to use it.
As my winner I choose... Do You Carrot All For Me because I liked how the author used fruits and veggies as some of the words. For example, when the author says, "Weed make a swell pear," the author used a homophone for "pear" when it really is "pair." I also liked all the homophones the poet used and that's why I choose Do You Carrot All For Me.

  11. I think Do You Carrot All For Me has more meaning because of the way words are used in it. For example, "My heart BEETS for you" and "LETTUCE marry." "beets" should really be "beats" and "lettuce should really be "let us."

I can connect to how to eat a poem because it is like the author is telling me to not use my manners at all! Sometimes I wish I could do that bet I know I can't. I sometimes like to think what everything would be like if no one used manners like in the poem!

My favorite out of the two poems is Do You Carrot All For Me because I like the personification in it. For example, "You are a peach" That is personification because the person is not really a peach!

  12. I think do you carrot all for me had more meaning than how to eat a poem. The man wanted to marry the girl, but got nerves and used examples of food instead. I think the message of the poem was that we all get nerves sometimes. I think that this poem was very funny, but still had great meaning.
I can connect best with how to eat a poem because sometimes I do not always want to use my manners, sometimes I just want to stuff the food in my face. The poem tells you not to use your manners.
My favorite poem was do you carrot all for me because I had a great meaning, but still made me laugh.

  13. I think do you carrot all for me had more meaning than how to eat a poem. The man asks a woman out but he uses fruits and veggies instead of real words. The author did a great job to put this poem together and make it all work out smoothly and have a catchy rhythm.

I can connect with how to eat a poem. Sometimes I don't want to eat the core or skin or all that jazz. I just want to eat strait through the middle without stopping to eat around the stem. The poem says that you don't have to be polite and just to bite in.

My winner is do you carrot all for me. The personification really helped me visualize the man talking to the woman using food words instead of real ones. I can tell the poet put a lot of thinking into this poem.

I can make a connection with How to Eat a Poem because sometimes I don't want to use my manners I want to just dig in. I like Do You Carrot all for Me because the writer's craft is smile and it uses funny metaphors like "my heart beets for you" because it substituted beet for beats like your heart.

They made this poem sound very catchy and very funny. I can connect with how to eat a poem because sometimes I just want to dig in because I am so hungary that I can not wait. The poem tells you not to use your manners. My favorite is Do you carrot all for me because the personification was really good. It was also really funny how they used food instead of real words.
