Poetry Madness: Elite 8, Game 3

Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read "Choosing Shoes" and "Life Doesn't Frighten Me."

In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
  • Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
  • What personal connection can you make with either poem?
  • Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Poet's craft can include repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, simile/metaphor, etc.
Make sure your answer is detailed and explains the three bullet points.

Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:

Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.

My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit.  I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.

I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South.

  1. Life Doesn't Frighten Me has a more important meaning to me because it is saying that sometimes life can be scary, and sometimes you just got to be brave and walk past it and ignore it.
My personal connection is with the poem Choosing Shoes because I have tried on shoes at the store. I have always wanted shoes that were comfortable instead of the way they look. My parents were trying to encourage me to try shoes that were a good style that would go with my outfit, just like the person working at the shoe store.
I like the poet's craft more in life Doesn't Frighten Me because it has so many rhymes like, "shadows on the wall, noises down the hall." It also has lots verses like, "I go boo to make them shoo, I make fun way they run." The verses support the message that the poem is giving.

  3. I think that Life doesn't frighten Me has a more important meaning that Choosing Shoes because it is trying to tell you that whatever frightens you, is not that scary. All those shadows on the wall that you were afraid of many years, are really just the things that you imagine. The person in the poem has a lot a faith that whatever she is scared of, she will always be alright.
I can make a connection to Choosing Shoes because when I am choosing my new shoes for school, it takes my at least 1 hour to find the perfect ones. I also can relate to it on how the fact that there are so many types of shoes to choose from. And they are all different! I thought that it was amazing how the poet made all these different types of shoes rhyme perfectly.
My favorite poem has to be Life Doesn't Frighten Me. I really liked how this poem had great imagery and it'ts rhyme scheme was AMAZING. I thought that it was so cool how the poet put all these words together to make them rhyme. 4. Life Doesn't Frighten Me has more meaning than Choosing Shoes because I like the way the girl in the story has so much courage. It is like she is not afraid of anything! I wish people now could be like that because they would never be woried or scared and everyone could just enjoy themself!
I can conect to Life Doesn't Frighten Me because when I red this poem I can really picture every thing in the story happening and I feel like I am the girl in the story! For example I could really picture what was happening when it said," Mean old mother goose, lions on the loose" I could picture a mean looking mother goose with lions running along beside her.
I enjoy how much the poem Choosing shoes rhymed so much even though Life Doesn't Frighten Me is still my favorite. For example in life doesn't frighten me said in the first sentence, "Shadows on the wall, noises down the hall, life doesn't frighten me at all"

  5. I think that life doesn't frighten me had more meaning then choosing shoes. The author is telling you that life might frighten you, but you should walk past it without being scared.
I can connect best with choosing shoes. Sometimes I am in a store and look at all the fancy shoes. At the end I pick the fancy ones, but when I look over my shoulder and everyone else was choosing the more comfortable shoes. At the end of the poem it says flat shoes, fat shoes, stump along like that shoes, wipe them on the mat shoes that is what they will buy. I feel like I am the author describing the fancy shoes that they want and everyone else are the people that want the comfortable shoes.
My favorite poem was life doesn't frighten me because it had more meaning. I also could understand it very well. I also liked how after every paragraph it repeats its self and says life doesn't frighten me. That is why I chose life doesn't frighten me.

  11. I think that Life Doesn't Frighten Me means more than Choosing Shoes because it is describing a person's inner thoughts, such as being bold and brave. Choosing Shoes is about a nice, laid back day when a girl and her mom are shopping at the mall.

I can connect to Choosing Shoes more than Life Doesn't Frighten Me because I love to shop with my mom. My mom also loves to go with me and shop for clothes, shoes, earrings, etc. When I go shopping for shoes, I always love the shoes that my mom gets for me.

My favorite poem is Choosing Shoes because I really like reading laid back poems that I have a connection with. I especially like the rhyme scheme AAAB and that leads me to also liking the rhythm of this poem. For example, when the poet states, "Buckle shoes, bow shoes, pretty-pointy-toe-shoes," you can really hear the rhythm in your head. I also really like the imagery. 15. Life doesn't frighten me seems to have more meaning then Choosing shoes, in my opinion. It talks about not being afraid in life. The things that might scare you in life turn out to be not scary. You just have to have a lot of confidence like the person in the story. Everything you may be scared of, you just have to remember that in real life, they are just shadows or tree branches. I think the main idea for this poem is simply, Don't be afraid to move forward in life, even if things seem scary.
I can connect to Choosing shoes because I go looking for shoes all the time! And it is true, that there are so many kinds of shoes na they are all different! I think this poem is very fun to read because the poet describes all the shoes perfectly. I think that it is very fun to wear the fancy shoes, but I would prefer the comfy shoes, like the poem said. I liked this poem a lot!
My winner is Life doesn't frighten me because it has such an important meaning. I really liked the things they said. Like, not to be afraid to move forward. I can really use that advice in life and i think most people can., too. I liked the "flow" of the poem as well. I thought that the rhyme scheme, AABB, was clever to use in this poem. I really loved Life doesn't frighten me and that is why i choose it for the winner of the Elite 8.
