Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read "Roger the Dog" and "Who Has Seen the Wind."
In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make with either poem?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Poet's craft can include repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, simile/metaphor, etc.
Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:
Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.
My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit. I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.
I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South.
I think Rodger the Dog has a more important meaning because personally, I think that life is not always about lying around and doing lazy things. Life is so exciting and I think that the boy in this poem is trying to get Rodger to do more things than just sit around.
ReplyDeleteMy connection is with the poem, Who has seen the Wind. Sometimes on a cool day in fall when I am out on the trampoline, the wind is making everything move and it seems as if the wind has a mind of it's own.
My favorite has to be Who has seen the Wind. I really liked this poem because the poet gave the trees really good personification and it made it easier to imagine the poem. I LOVE this poem!
I think that Roger The dog had a great meaning. You should not just sit around and do nothing, you should enjoy life! The boy in the story was trying to get Roger t do something other than sit around.
ReplyDeleteMy connection with who has seen the wind is that sometimes when I am outside the wind blows on the trees and I feel like the wind is trying to get my attention, but I can still not see the wind.
My favorite poem is who has seen the wind. I really enjoyed how the author says different things about the the wind and how you might feel it, but you can not see it. That is why I chose who has seen the wind.
Rodger the Dog has more meaning to me because sometime I just want to lie down and take the day off. Life is so interesting and if you are lazy, you might miss it. That is why the boy is trying to make Roger at least move around some.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Who has seen the Wind. Sometimes I look around out side and just think that I haven't seen the wind but no one else has either. The person in this book is saying,"Who has seen the wind, neither I nor you."
My winner is still Roger the Dog. The poet gave great personification. I can just picture Roger lying on a mat next to the fireplace, but when he gets up, it's to eat. This poem is just funny because sometimes my dogs, Maggie and Henry, look like they could sleep all day.
I think Roger The Dog has more meaning because of the personality of the dog. big, lumpy, lazy. I think that even though the story is about a lazy dog, the poet is trying to say that if you are like Roger and you are lazy in life, you might miss some of the best parts about life. Life is very fun and full of excitement and you shouldn't just waste that by doing nothing.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Who Has Seen The Wind because when I look around, I CAN see the wind. The trees blowing and the grass moving. I may not actually SEE it, but I know it is there. I also felt the things that the poem is talking about. That the wind is all around me. I can really feel that.
My winner is Who Has Seen The Wind because I love how this poem really describes what the wind feels like. I now know to look for the traits(Grass moving around, trees blowing around) on a windy day! that is why i picked this poem.
Roger the dog to me means a lot of things. For example dogs are lazy for time to time especially Roger. So for me this poem means a dog are lazy sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Roger the dog cause I have a dog to and he is a big cuddler
and love lying around. But when it comes to laziness contest my money is on
Roger.
Roger the dog has great similes and that leads me to say Roger the dog WINS!!!
I think Roger the Dog has more meaning to me because sometimes I just want to sit down next to the fire and eat and nap. But then I would miss all the interesting things in life. I think that is what the poet is trying to say. My connection with Who Has Seen the Wind is sometimes when I'm outside playing I can feel a cool breeze passing by but I can not see it me or anybody in the world. My favorite was Roger the Dog. I liked it's personification. I could picture it in my head a lazy dog sleeping all the time, it also reminds me of my dog.
ReplyDeleteI think Roger the Dog has a lot more meaning because it shows actions of the dog. It also has a great rhythm and I can connect with it since I have a cute little dog of my own!
ReplyDeleteWho has Seen the Wind is more serious and factual. It says that you can't see the wind but can see and feel the effects of it.
My winner is Roger the Dog because it has more meaning and I can also connect with it more. My dog also helped me to visualize this poem with more clarity.
I think that Who Has Seen the Wind has more meaning than Roger the Dog because it is tells about how people can appreciate things they can't see. In Roger the Dog, it tells about a lazy dog who only sleeps and eats. Since I don't have a dog, that doesn't me much to me at all.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Who Has Seen the Wind because I love to play outside and feel the wind blow through my hair and make the trees and bushes move. I cannot connect to Roger the Dog because I do not know what having a dog is like, though the dog seems to be funny.
I enjoyed Who Has Seen the Wind more because I love to be outside. I really liked the clever personification like when it says, "But when the trees bow down their heads." The repetition of the two opening lines was also catchy. Roger the Dog is only about a dog that does nothing but act like a baby and that is why I chose Who Has Seen the Wind.
I think Roger The Dog has more meaning then Who Has Seen The Wind. I think what Roger The Dog is trying to say is that a dog is going to be tired and get old just like a human is, and as humans we have to respect that even if we really want to go outside and play with our lazy, tired, boring old dogs.
ReplyDeleteMy connection is with the poem Who Has Seen The Wind. Sometimes I am playing outside and I can feel the wind on my face and I sometimes wonder what the wind looks like and where does it come from, does come from a cloud no one really does know.
My favorite poem is Who Has Seen The Wind because the question the author is asking is a true cliff hanger for me who really has seen the wind? I also liked how the whole poem came together and rhymed so well.
I liked seen the wind because it liked the way that it rhymed right and that the first two lines on both paragraphs are the same.
ReplyDeleteI liked roger the dog because it had a important meaning.it was saying that you should not be lazy like a big fat dog. I think that the boy is trying to teach the dog not to do that.
My favorite is have you seen the wind because sometimes i wonder the same thing.
Who has seen the wind's meaning is more important to me because it tells an interesting view point on how to tell when the wind is around, and about how it is invisible.
ReplyDeleteI can make a personal connection with Who has seen the wind because I know how it feels to feel like you can see the wind, bu you really can't.
I like Roger the dog's poet's craft better, because it seems very free - spirited and silly, and the free flowing AABB rhyme scheme, makes it flow really well.
whoops, sorry, my favorite poem is Who has seen the wind.
DeleteI think Who Has Seen The Wind has more meaning than Roger The Dog because I enjoy poems that "flow" and have very meaningful words like when it says, “Neither I nor you” and then it flips the words and says, “Neither you nor I.”
ReplyDeleteI can relate to Roger The Dog because my Grandparents have a dog named Pete. Pete is a lot like Roger the dog because he sleeps a lot a doesn’t get up very much. The only way he is not like Roger is that Pete likes to run around the yard.
I saw an example of personification when I read this, “But when the trees bow down their heads” that is personification because trees cannot really bow dow their heads.
My favorite poem is still Who Has Seen The Wind because I really like the way everything is described. It made me feel like I was there.
Roger The Dog has a more important meaning to me because the poem is talking about an older dog that does not play as much anymore but needs extra love. I feel bad for him.
ReplyDeleteMy connection is with the poem, Who Has Seen The Wind. In Who Has Seen The Wind because I have seen the leaves on the trees shake and I have seen branches on trees wave and I knew that meant the wind was blowing.
I liked the poet's craft more in Roger The Dog craft more because in every verse the author put in a rhyme.
I think Roger the dog has more meaning because it is about an old dog Who cannot play anymore and needs love. I made two connections with Who Has Seen The Wind, Number one is a text to self Because I know what is like to here wind rustling leaves, and my second was text to text because I read a book called Brown Bear Wakes Up and it talks about when he leaves his den he hears leaves rustling above him. My favorite poem was Rodger The Dog Because the writers craft was imagry and I could picture Rodger in my head.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Rodger the Dog. I am sometimes lazy and just sit around all day watching TV. My brother is like Rodger's owner because he and Rodger's owner are both trying their pet/ little sister to go outside with them.
ReplyDeleteI think that Who has Seen the Wind has a more important meaning because it is saying that who has seen the wind, you can feel it but no one has ever seen the wind.
My winner poem is... Rodger the Dog!!! Because I liked how it was more funny than serious, and how Rodger is sooo lazy.
I think Roger The Dog has more meaning because it is about a lazy dog that never does anything except eat and if you don't do anything then you can't explore the wonderful world outside.
ReplyDeleteI can connect to Who Has Seen The Wind because sometimes I am playing outside and there is a breeze. I try to find it but I remember that I can't see the wind and neither can anyone else.
My favorite poem was probably Roger The Dog because I really liked how the author painted a picture in my mind. I also chose it because the author rhymed really well the whole story.

The winner was Roger the Dog. It had more meaning because it reminds me of my dog that is lazy. Roger the Dog also had better imagery because it explains how Roger is lazy and saves his energy to empty his food bowl.
I think Who Has Seen The Wind is about how people can appreciate things that they can't see.
