Now that you have read through all of the poems and chosen a winner to advance to the Elite 8, the pressure has mounted. Read "Mother to Son" and "Casey at the Bat."
In Round 2, you need to choose your winner based on the following criteria:
- Which poem's meaning is more important to you?
- What personal connection can you make?
- Which poet's craft do you enjoy more? Poet's craft can include repetition, imagery, personification, rhyme, simile/metaphor, etc.
Here is an example of advanced/proficient writing:
Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because it is talking about a
woman who was probably a slave telling her boy that life isn't going to be easy and
I really think that goes close to my heart. And I feel bad for them.
My connection is with the poem, Casey at the Bat. I have been on a softball team before and struck out when my team really needed a hit. I can imagine how the fans and the player feel when the game is over and they do not win.
I like Mother to Son's poem craft more because it rhymes better and the way it is
written sounds like the mother is from the South.
I think that Mother to Son has a more important meaning than Casey at Bat. I think this because, I can really picture this probably poor mother telling her son that life isn't always going to go your way and that all you have to do is keep on trucking. It really warmed my heart to read this poem.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the poem Casey at Bat because I could make a great connection with it. I play softball, so I am used to seeing people get struck out, including myself. I also think that this poem really made me visualize the situation with Casey and how he was up to bat.
My favorite still has to be Mother to Son because it is very heart warming to see this poor mother and her son who are struggling through life, but they always pull through and make it happen. I also really like how the poet made this poem rhyme so much.
I think that Mother To Son had a bigger meaning than Casey At the Bat.I thought this because,it is really easy to just picture a mother who has just had an incredibly terrible life.Another reason I chose this is because,it goes more deep into emotion.
ReplyDeleteIn Casey At the Bat Casey gets two strikes and when he tries to hit the last ball he misses the ball and strikes out.I can connect to Casey At The Bat. because,I'v been at two outs before and I tried to hit the ball but I struck out.
I think that Casey At the Bat was better because, it was very entertaning.I thought it was really silly how you think that Casey was going to get a home run and then he strikes out.
I think Casey at the Bat is a fun poem that I can certainly relate to. I've struck out people (when I pitch) and have gotten struck out. It has helped me to feel like I'm in Casey's shoes because I've been in his situation. It also teaches a lesson because it shows that you don't ever get your hopes up high. Mother to Son is a little bit more meaningful than Casey at the Bat because it is a little bit more emotional. I've had many a talk with my mom and can relate as well.
ReplyDeleteI chose Mother to Son because even though I relate a little more to Casey at the Bat, I feel like Mother to Son is more meaningful.
I think Mother to Son has a really important meaning because it has a great lesson to it. I think this because if you do what this poem says, it can take you farther in life. I think this poem is a great poem and is very heart warming.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy the poem Casey at the Bat because I think it was a great story and a lot of people can make connections to it. For example, I have played softball and I saw someone strike out before. I also liked it because I liked how it had a lot of suspense to it.
My favorite is mother to Son because it has a great rhythm and I love the meaning that this poem has. That is why I choose this poem.
I think Mother to Son is about a mother telling her son to persevere through the hard times and that life ain't no crystal stair, and so he should not always expect things to go his way. I can really picture a mom telling her son that and the son being sad. I think Casey at Bat is about a boy who is the best hitter on their team and he is up to bat with a man 3rd and 2nd and they are losing by two and the pitcher throws the ball right past Casey and the umpire yells strike one and the fans yell kill him but Casey made them stop then he yells strike two and the fans start yelling fraud but Casey makes them stop again and then all of the sudden he strikes out and everyone in town is sad. I think the rhyme scheme was AABB. My favorite was Mother to Son because I think it had a deeper meaning then Casey at bat. I could also really picture it in my head. Also, I liked how the mom never gave up in life and that is what she wants her son to do.
ReplyDeleteMother To Son has a more important meaning to me than Casey At The Bat because it is about how life isn't perfect and when you have bad times and you just got to get up. I need to work on that sometimes. I also like the rhyme scheme that the author used.
ReplyDeleteI also like Casey At The Bat because I have messed up when I shouldn't have. I know what it feels like to loose.
I like Mother To Son the best because of the author's rhymes that he/she put in the poem and the message is more important to me.
I like mother to son because it was sweet but at the same time almost sad. She is telling the little boy that life is not easy but you have to keep moving on. It was emoshenal.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the bat was about a boy who struck out in baseball. I had a text to world connection with it because, I went to a sport camp one year and when we did softball i knew how i felt to struck out.
My favorite is still mother to son because it was heart warming and really sweet hearing the mother talk to the boy.
I think Mother to son gives a more important message than Casey at bat because it is about saying life is not perfect and to not give up. Sometimes I give up on things to.
ReplyDeleteI also like Casey at Bat because I mess up sometimes too.
I like Mother to son more because it sends a more important message than Casey at Bat.
Mother to Son tells a son in my opinion to never give up. The mother is telling the son that life is hard and will have ups and downs. It reminds me that sometimes I think things are hard, but there is someone out there having a harder time.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the Bat is about a boy who strikes out and lets down the whole team. The team and the crowd is relying on Casey to win the game for them. But, I feel bad for Casey because of all the pressure, but it takes the whole team to win.
I like Casey and the Bat the best because I can relate to the story when I am playing sports.
I think Mother To Son is about a mom telling her son to never give up, even if life may be hard. I think she might be referring to her own life because she says, "Life for me aint been no crystal stair." Which means in my opinion that her life was not so easy as well.
ReplyDeleteI think Casey At The Bat is about a star player named Casey who everyone thinks will win the game for his team. Everyone is counting on him. But, casey let's the crowd down and he is also disappointed. I think Casey could have done better if he wasn't being so lazy. Now, everyone doesn't think Casey is so good anymore.
I choose Mother To Son because it has a deeper meaning and it's something you can learn from. I also liked it because it reminds me of my mom telling me to not give up and keep trying, even when things are hard. I also liked how the mom used, "Life ain't been no crystal stair", to say that her life was hard instead of saying, "My life was hard." I liked how they used other words to describe the mom's life. That is why I choose Mother To Son.
I think Casey At The Bat is about a boy who keeps striking out in a base ball game. When everyone thinks he is going to hit the ball he strikes out again! I noticed that in each paragraph the rhyme scheme is always AABB. For example the last words of each line in a paragraph were, roar and shore. (AA) The other ones are, stand and hand.(BB)
ReplyDeleteI think that mother to son is about a mother telling her son bad things that came up in her life and she is telling her son to avoid them. There was no rhyme scheme. Since there wasn't a rhyme scheme it sounded like it was not a poem because we usually do not rhyme when we talk.
My favorite poem out if the two is Mother To Son. I liked mother to son because of some of the things the mother said, like, "life for me ain't been no crystal stair" I think that that means life hasn't been very good for the mother in the past. I also like the way the mother described things in the poem like when she said, " It's had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor-bare."
In my opinion, Mother to Son has a more important meaning to me because she is telling her son that life is not always going to be easy and you just need to keep with it and never give up/ turn back.
ReplyDeleteMy connection is with the poem Casey at the Bat. My connection is that I have watched my brother play baseball many times and also seen people play it. I have seen some of my brother's teammates strike out even though his team really needed a hit.
My winner poem is... Mother to Son! Because I thought that the meaning was a lot more meaningful that Casey at the Bat. I also liked Mother to Son better because of the way the mother compared her life to a set of stairs and instead of saying, "My life is hard and has had some really rough places in it," The author said, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair. It's had tacks in it, And splinters," That is why I choose Mother to Son.
I think Casey at the Bat is about a boy who is expected to be a "big hitter." He gets WAY to confident and send a wave of shock throughout the crowd. I noticed that in every paragraph, it has an AABB rhyme scheme. For example, in the last paragraph it says, "Bright and Light" and "Shout and Out.
ReplyDeleteThe second poem, Mother to son is about a mom talking to her son. She tells him that life won't always be easy, or in her words,"Life ain't been no crystal stair." The mom says that bad things will occur and not to give up and turn around.
My favorite poem has to be Mother to Son. I enjoyed this poem because I could really feel the emotions in it. The mom also just said to preserver through tough times. I like how this poem is very descriptive and it makes me feel like I am the child she is talking to.
In my opinion mother to son had very important meaning. The mother was telling her son that life is not going to be easy, but you need to keep trying. Like if you ever try do something that is really hard and things don't go your way, there is NO reason to give up. Keep trying. I think this message is very important and makes you want to try harder.
ReplyDeleteI liked casey at the bat because I could really visualize it. I play softball and I see people get struck out a lot. This helps me visualize it better and I can see the player who got struck out. I also know how they feel because I get struck out a lot.
My favorite poem was mother to son because it makes me want to try harder. The message is also something that everyone should think about when things don't go their way. That is why I chose mother to son.
I think Mother To Son has more meaning. I think this because it is about a mother telling her son that life isn't always going to go your way and that you have to go through some hard times. The author also states that it is like climbing a mountain.
ReplyDeleteI made a connection with Casey At Bat because I have been on a baseball team before and struck out when the team need me. This makes me feel like I have been Casey before.
My favorite poem is probably Mother To Son because I really like that the author made it have lots of meaning. I also chose it because I really felt like I was the son that was being told that life isn't fair.
In Mother to Son it touches my heart to hear that woman say, "And life for me ain't been no crystal stair". In my opinion Mother to Son has more meaning than Casey at the Bat because it is about a woman who has had struggles in her life and is telling her son not to dwell on the bad things of the past, but on the good things in the present.
ReplyDeleteIn Casey at the Bat, the author is describing a fun day playing baseball and hanging out with friends, whereas Mother to Son is about a serious conversation between a mother and her son. In my opinion, Casey at the Bat is not as serious as Mother to Son because they are playing a baseball game during the weekend.
My favorite poem is Mother to Son because it has more meaning to me. It really warms my heart when I can picture a mother and her son sitting together and talking about never giving up. Casey at the Bat is a good and entertaining poem but I have to go with Mother to Son.
I think mother to son had mare meaning, and I liked how it had metaphors like life ain't no crystal stair fore me. ( because life is not actually stairs)I did not like Casey at bat because she struck out. That being said I liked mother to son best.
ReplyDeletemore not mare
ReplyDeleteBoo see i am scary
ReplyDeleteI think mother to son tells a little bit more what is going on in the poem then Casey at the bat.I just think that Mother to son really lets me know what it happening and it really touches me how the mother says that her life hasn't been so easy for her.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the bat is good but it just doesn't tell me what is really going on.
my favorite was mother to son because it has great meaning and is very heart warming and sweat
In mother to son it had more meaning because it was saying not to dwell on the bad things but look forward to the good. I liked the metaphor life aint' been no crystal stair because it's not actually stairs. In my opinion mother to son makes a good point because you may have tough things in life but you can't just let it get the best of you - you need to fix it.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the bat was a good book but I did not like how she struck out. I have a connection with Casey because she struck out under pressure and i have too. I liked the imagery of the field.
Mother to sun is better because it teaches you a life lesson and also I really like how she was comparing life to a crystal stair.
In Mother To Son I like how the author states "And life for me ain't been no crystal stair." I like Mother To Son better than Casey At Bat because it's about a mother who struggles in her life and is trying to tell her son to never give up.
ReplyDeleteIn the poem Casey At Bat the author describes how it's a fun day of baseball and to hang out with your friends. But Mother Of Son has more of an conversation than Casey At Bat does.
As my winner I choose... Mother To Son because it has alot more meaning than Casey At Bat. Also the reason I choose thise poem is because I can picture me as the son and my mom talking to me and saying "Don't ever give up." I liked Casey At bat and how fun and entertaining it was but I still have to go with Mother To Son as my winner.
Mother To Son is about a mom that has been hurt and nobody can pull her down. She just keeps climbing up. She is telling her son to do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteCasey at the Bat is about a baseball player who is way too confident in himself. Everyone is thinking Casey will get a hit, but he strikes out.
I like Casey at the Bat best because it is a fun and entertaining poem. It makes a good point about not thinking too much of yourself. If you think too much of yourself you won't be successful.
Mother To Son has a more important meaning to me, because it seems to really touch me, and I feel bad for the mother and her son.
ReplyDeleteI can make a connection to Casey At Bat, because I've played softball and tee ball, and I wasn't very good either.
I like Mother To Son's Poet's craft better, because it has a southern twist on the mother's speech, and a meaningful purpose
I think that Life doesn't Frighten me is about how you shouldn't scare you or you should not see the scary stuff in anything. The connection is T-W because I have a lot of friends that are scared of a lot of things.
ReplyDeleteI think that Choosing Shoes is about how when your shopping for shoes there is a bunch of different kinds of shoes. My connection is T-S because that is what my mom does when we are shopping for shoes.
I think that the winner is Life Doesn't Frighten me because it has more of a story. The story is to not be afraid. It has more meaning to me because I like poems that teach you something.
