Reflections on Heart's of Service

Dear students,

I had a wonderful time volunteering with you and your families at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission. I learned a lot about myself as well as the importance of giving back to the community. Volunteering takes more than showing up for a few hours. It takes preparation, planning, action, and, now, reflecting. I want you to reflect on your time spent at the Nashville Rescue Mission. Please answer the following questions:

  • What was your role(s) at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission? How did you contribute?
  • What was your favorite part(s) of our service project and WHY?
  • Name some connections you made during your time at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission.
  • What is something new you learned from this experience? Be specific! Also, were you surprised by anything you saw or heard?

Please make sure you answered each bullet point before you publish your comment. Double check your comment for punctuation/spelling mistakes. Your comment must be at least 5 sentences.

I cannot wait to hear about your day.

You teacher,
Mrs. Eads

  3. I went to the N.W.R.M and cleaned bedrooms and bathrooms. I am thankful for being so fortunate. It was actually really fun, and was not dirty. It felt good doing something for somebody in need. At lunch we served food to the homeless and they told us that the sandwiches were very good. My connection is that I have served people in need. I really enjoyed being at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission.

  4. At the WTM I learned a lot about how fortunate I am to have a home and food. I was surprised by how kind the women were. I also liked orange Crush like a lady I met. My role was to clean the dorms. My favorite part was cleaning the bathroom because it was a job nobody wanted and it was super fun.

  7. At the W.R.C I cleaned out the bathroom. I took out all the trash and cleaned the showers. My favorite part was cleaning out the showers because I thought it was fun swishing the water around on the floor. I connected to this because we served food to the people, and I have done this before. I learned that its pretty hard to clean out one bathroom.

  8. Today we went to the Woman's Rescue Mission. We cleaned rooms, hallways, and restrooms. I cleaned the rooms and hallways. We also made food for the women and kids staying and we picked up trash on the campus. My favorite part was when we served the food and drinks to the people that were staying. I have made and packed food for the hungry before. I did not know that there were so many places where people without a place to sleep could stay.

  9. When I was at the N.W.R.M I learned. That there is a lot of people that don't have homes in the world. I felt really good when I was cleaning the bath room. My jobs were cleaning the bath room and taking the trays when the people were done. I had a lot of fun at the N.W.R.M and I would go back.

  10. Going to the Nashville Women's Rescue showed me a lot of things I never thought about. When we first got there, we were assigned jobs. I helped clean the upstairs dorms. We cleaned the bed and mopped the floors. We swept under the bunk beds and washed the windows. We also dusted the window panes. The room was empty. There were no shelfs or trunks. Only bunk beds. We cleaned two dorms total. I felt like I was really helping these people. My favorite part was when we were serving lunch to the women. I really felt I was playing my part by helping them. They were not at all what I exspected. They had nice clothes and weren't very thin. But some showed signs of being homeless. Some had lost teeth or had deep scars. But it made me feel really good that I was helping them. I even connected with some. Although we didn't have much time to inneract, I talked to a woman and her baby son, who was two years old. I learned that she had three children. My mom has three children as well and I am the oldest of three. It made me think that even if they may be poorer than me, we are all equal and alike in ways. Something I learned from today was how their apperance doesn't match their character. Some women looked beaten and made me a little nervous. But, when I talked to some of them, they were very kind and polite to me. I could tell that they were happy I was helping them out. My lesson I learned: Don't judge people before you get to talk to them. When I saw all the women, I was surprised. They didn't look anything like I thought they would. They were in nice clothes and looked well cared for in the mission. I thought they would wear dark dirty clothes and messy hair. But they weren't. The rescue mission showed me not to judge people and showed me how forchnet we are.

  11. My visit to the Nashville Women's Rescue was very inspiring! My roles at the rescue were cleaning the dorms and bathrooms. I first cleaned the dorms. First we had to wipe down the mattresses with Clorox wipes. After that we took a big dust broom to get all the dust out from under the bunks. Next we took the big, heavy, wet, mop and mopped the floors up. It was a lot of work! But I know it was worth it because anyone who slept up there, would definitely appreciate it. I then helped clean up the bathrooms. I did not do that for very long time, but I helped. I also helped serve to the women and children at the lunch cafeteria. It was very fun! My favorite part was probably seeing all the smiles on people's faces when we were done. Seeing them thanking us was a joy to see. I know it changed there their lives, and mine. A connection I made today was that there are so many people in Tennessee who are poor. Not just in Tennessee but everywhere! This tells me that everyone can take action in serving the less fortunate. Something new I learned, was that I did not know there were so many rescue missions! This really shocked me that people care for other people. This trip was very inspiring and I will never, ever, ever, forget how good that I felt serving others!

  14. At NWRM, my role was to clean the woman and childrens’ dorm room. I also served food in the dining room. My favorite part of of my roles was when I was cleaning the dorms, because I saw the small amount of things that the women and children owned, and it made me appreciate the things that I owned. It also made me feel really good that I was serving the women and children. One of the things I would struggle with, would be being separated from my dad and my pets. I was surprised that so many people had to sleep in the same room! I really enjoyed serving at the NWRM!

  15. I loved getting to serve at the Women's Rescue Center. I loved getting to learn about the way people in poverty live. I got to serve by helping clean the dorms and bathroom. When I first saw dorms I was shocked to see how filthy they were and was ready to help clean them. My favorite part of the trip to the Women’s Rescue Center was, getting to serve the women their lunch. I got to see them smile to a nice warm meal knowing that they might not get that every day. When I first saw the women and children I thought I’m a very fortunate person, and need to give something to them in return. I learned so much at the Women's Rescue Center. Like the feeling of giving something to someone it might be as little as a smile, or serving them a warm meal. When I left the place I felt good that I had done something for the less fortunate. If someone asked me if I would go back I would say YES of course. I loved getting to serve there, and giving something in return to the ones who might not get 3 meals a day. Or a bed to sleep in every night.
