Reflections on Hearts of Service Day

Dear students,

I had a wonderful time volunteering with you and your families at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission. I learned a lot about myself as well as the importance of giving back to the community. Volunteering takes more than showing up for a few hours. It takes preparation, planning, action, and, now, reflecting. I want you to reflect on your time spent at the Nashville Rescue Mission. Please answer the following questions:

  • What was your role(s) at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission? How did you contribute?
  • What was your favorite part(s) of our service project and WHY?
  • Name some connections you made during your time at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission.
  • What is something new you learned from this experience? Be specific! Also, were you surprised by anything you saw or heard?

Please make sure you answered each bullet point before you publish your comment. Double check your comment for punctuation/spelling mistakes. Your comment must be at least 5 sentences.

I cannot wait to hear about your day.

You teacher,
Mrs. Eads

  1. At the Nashville Rescue Mission, we picked up cigar's at the playground. I bet we picked up 6,000 cigar's. We really cheered up all the people that lived there. I felt bad for the people that lived there. The people there were very poor, and my favorite part was picking up cigar's.

  2. At the Nashville rescue mission center we helped outside picking up trash like candy wrappers and cigarette butts. It was not a fun thing to do but I loved that i was helping them with picking up trash. I liked it because people will notice that they need to pick up there own and not let other people do it for them. I made connections with that day because i know that i should not litter because others will have to pick it up. I really want to help the people who smoke to stop. The last thing that was hard was to smell the smoke and seeing the people smoking and I know that the staff is trying for them not to smoke and i want to help them too.

  3. When we went to the Rescue Mission, I helped on cleaning up the parking and the playground. We mostly picked up on the playground, but we had to pick up a TON of cigarettes. I learned that the people there do not get a good education like we do. All the women there don't get a full three meals every day on the streets. But they were all very happy to see us. I'm glad I went.

  4. I love working at the at Room at the inn. I served food and cleaned the tables. My favorite part is talking and hearing their story's. They all have different story's. I learned that I have so much and the little matters to them.

  5. When we went to the Women's Rescue Center we served them soup and we helped pick up trash. Our class made soup and brought the soup to the Women's Rescue Center. For our job we helped clean up the playground and we all picked up about 200 or 300 cigarette butts. I learned that we need to be grateful for what we have.

  6. At the women's rescue mission our class helped pick up trash around the building like... gum, candy, cigarette butts, and wrappers. It felt good to know that we were helping others by giving them a clean environment to be in. I also felt good for making the soup and giving all the people a meal. I hope I can help more people soon!

I made a conection from when I did meals on wheels and gave food to people. Something I learned was not everyone has a great life like me. I didn't no that sigerets make them happy?

  8. On Hearts of Servise Day the fourth grade went to the Wemons Rescue Mission. When I went to the Wemons Rescue Mission I cleaned up outside and picked up trash. I almost clened up 15 candy rapers and almost 100 sigeret butts. It was fun because my freinds were cleaning up with me. I learned that you don't need thst much to occupie yourself or to be happy just enjoy what you have now. I was so suprized by 3 things. [1] how many people smoke sigeretts. [2] how nice the people were. [3] how much trash there was and we picked up. I can't wait to go again.

  10. When I was at the rescue mission I saw all of us working together to help. I helped cleaning up the playground with my class. We picked up hundreds of cigarettes and I found a bag of toys! I liked finding out how happy the ladies and kids were when we helped. I felt like I connected with people when I just said happy valentines day. I felt really good. I learned that they don't mind that they don't have the top brand of clothes or coat and they they have perseverance also, especially when we came in when we had Under Armour sweat shirts or North Face jackets I learned a lot at the Women rescue mission.

  11. When I went to the Women's Rescue Mission I got to clean up trash such as: Candy wrappers, Cigarettes, Cans, and gum. We at least picked up 10,000 cigarettes. My favorite part was when Otis and I has a contest who could pick the most special edition yellow cigarettes. When I was there I realized I needed to be more thankful for what I have, because I have a almost perfect life and those women have a pretty sad life.

  12. When we were serving at the Nashville rescue center I realized something. I realized that not everyone has a nice home and warm bed to sleep in and not everyone knows when they are going to get their next meal. It is amazing that your whole life could change in a minute and not in a good way. That is why it felt so good to serve at the Nashville Rescue center. We helped by picking up trash outside. When we were done it looked so much better! If you were staying there wouldn't you want someone to come and clean up.

  13. For hearts of service day we went to the women's rescue mission. When we were there my class got to pick up trash/cigerates. It wasn't all that fun picking up trash but it felt good because I was helping the community and the people who were less fortunate then me. I was supprised with how many people were at the mission. My favorite part was after we were done 2 of the people staying at the mission said "thank you" and that's the part I remember most.

  15. When I was at the Nashville Woman's rescue mission I got to pick up trash. I picked up a lot of cigarette butts. My favorite part was walking through the lunchroom because it was nice to know that they have food. I made a connection that they have a playground and a basketball court just like Oak Hill School. I learned that even if you didn't get the job you wanted your still doing a good deed. They smoke a whole lot of cigarettes because we picked up about of a million of them.

  16. My role as helping clean up out side, like picking up cigarette butts, candy rappers, & other trash. My favorite part was making the soup because it felt nice to serve others & to give. Some of the connections I made is the people there & with my teacher Mrs. McGee. What I learned is that not every one doesn't have a good home or a place to sleep. I was surprised about how many people were there.

What my job was cleaning the chapel was to wipe the walls and sweep. I learned there not to take the things I have for granted. I loved going there and helping out. I hope I can go again.

  19. When we went to the Woman's Rescue Center our class cleaned up the chapel. I mopped and wiped down chairs. I liked mopping because it was fun ringing out the mop. The connection I made was that they have a cafeteria and a playground just like we do. I learned that what we take for granted they don't have like a house, good food, a bed, and money. That's what I did at the Women's Rescue Center

  20. I was washing the chairs and arm-rests in the chapel. This was one of my favorite ways to spend Hearts Of Service Day. I loved the feeling that I was really helping someone. I also loved that they actually had a chapel! I made a text -to-person connection with a boy and a girl named Pudding (Tokyo Mew Mew) He was looking at one of our valentines and suddenly commented, "Momma! OHS loves me!"! Isn't that cute!? I learned that more people are homeless or hungry than there are rich people. I was surprised that they gave so much variety to these people.

  21. I went to the Women's Rescue Mission to help people that do not have a home and/or money. Our job was to clean the Church. My favorite part to clean was the walls and floor. I really feel bad for those people. I learned that not everyone has a house. I was very fun.

  22. I went to the Women's Rescue Mission. I helped clean the chapel by scrubbing the walls and drying the windows. My favorite part was being able to help less fortunate people while being able to be with my friends. When I saw the women it reminded me of driving in the car and seeing a man who was homeless selling newspapers for money. I learned that everyone is alike because everyone was made by God. I loved going to the Women's Rescue Mission for the second time!!!

  24. I enjoyed being at the Nashville Women's Rescue Mission because I got to clean the chapel, wipe the chairs, and mop the floor. It made me feel great to help others and their needs. I loved meeting new faces that would smile when I would talk. I learned that I should take time off of me and help others who are needing. So when you feel like you need to get a knew toy or some new clothes, give them to the people who don't have enough to go out and buy those things. The meaning of joy is, J Jesus first, O others second, Y you third.

  25. In 2014 my class went to the Nashville Woman's Rescue Mission for our hearts of service day on Valentine's day. My classes role was to clean the chapple, and I got assigned to clean the chairs. One reason we had to clean the chairs was the chairs carry a lot of germs, and they said that the night before they had to help take a baby's temperature. When they got the temperature they saw the baby had a fever! My favorite part was that I got to help and be with my friends, why I liked doing those things were because I have a tender heart and to help and be with friends was awesome! I learned that not everyone has everything they need to live.

  26. My role at the Nashville Rescue Mission was the squeedgie. The squeedgie is something you use to clean tall windows. My favorite about the Nashville Rescue Mission was touring the building. I liked it because I was able to see how people less fortanute than me lived. I made connections with the people that work their and became better friends with Matthew. Something new I learned that these people live a hard, hard life compared to us. Such as they may have to share a room with people they may not even know. It was very fun serving at the Nashville Rescue Mission.

  27. My roll at the woman's rescue mission was cleaning the chapel. My favorite part was knowing that I was cleaning the chapel for God.A connection I made was a woman walked by and said "were are you all from?"and we all said "were from the Oak Hill School" she said"that's great happy valentines day!!" I learned that it feels good to help the people that don't have as much as us. it also feels good to clean the chapel something they can't do. That was the time on valentines day I went to the woman's rescue mission!!

  28. For Hearts Of Service Day,we went to the Women's Rescue Mission. My was cleaning the chapel with my friends. We swept, wiped, and washed their windows. Other classes fixed up the dorms, served the food, and cleaned the campus. I really liked learning about other peoples lives and helping others. I felt like I made strong connections with the women there. They made sweet comments like, "God bless you!" and "Thank you so much you sweet kids." A women even said to me, "Thank you, pretty eyes." I learned so much from this experience. This time, my teachers were the families at the mission. They taught me that not everyone has a warm bed to sleep in, food and water, or a real home. All the things we take for granted, they don't have enough of. They taught me to be thankful, kind, and to let God decide. I had a great time on Hearts Of Service Day.

  29. This Valentines Day I went to the women's rescue mission. My job was I cleaned chairs with Andrew and Matthew, so a sickness a little boy got would not spread. As we walked through the cafeteria seeing everyone enjoy the soup we made. While I was there I made a better connection with Andrew because we worked togather.I learned that everyone is the same because God has made us all, and they even have a playground just like at OakHill! I'm happy that I got to go there and help those who live there.

  31. I went to the woman's rescue mission this valentines day. My role at the woman's rescue mission was to clean up the chapel. It is very important to clean up the chapel because most of these people don't know who God and Jesus are. My favorite part was seeing all the people in the lunch room. Just knowing that they got a meal made me happy. I made a connection with the woman's rescue mission because I didn't know they were Christians. I learned that these people were Christians. I was kind of surprised because they already help these people so much, but the most they help them with is being a christian.
